I did have a search out for a 5-string Wal but was today offered a Wal Mk2 4-string at a reasonable price and - having wondered whether I would really get to grips with a 5-string (I have flunked before when I had an Alembic 5'er) - decided to play it safe and buy the 4-stringer. So here is the rather lovely 2004 American Walnut-faced, ebony board Mk2 I have acquired today

Excellent gig, BigRedX! Very good band with some great tunes. And your Gus bass does look ludicrously sexual Hope to see you again, hopefully with Rattlin Bone on the same bill
Good move Clarky, the AI heads are amazing pieces of gear. As you know that company's got the best after sales service in the business too. If you can, try it out with an Epifani UL112, it's a match made in heaven. Sounds glorious with a flatwound strung p bass too
Cheers Chris - trust you're still loving my old (and your old and now yours again!) 72P? The Clarus+ not only has loads of extra headroom with extr awattage but also has two channels so can be used for doubling - my band is DB-only right now but I am sneakily planning to work on them to include the odd fretless or fretted electric bass song
I'd love to know what you think of the doubler once you've gigged it. That and the AI Clarus are the only heads I'm considering other than the PJB M300 or D600 to go with my 8b cab. You guys seem to be the double bass amp connoisseurs on this forum, so I'm finding your feedback on each head to be invaluable. I just need to take my upright on a train journey to a decent music shop that stocks some of these options. I hope you've finally solved the sound quality v.s. volume issue!
I'm afraid I've sent back the Doubler. I didn't think the sound quality matched Acoustic Image (at least with a piezo pickup) and I think EA have gone too far in making it lightweight - to the extent it seems incredibly breakable. It weighs a ludicrously low 2.5 pounds and I would have very happily traded another pound or two in weight on it to make it more sturdy. I am sticking with Acoustic Image and will be getting a Clarus+, the new head with double the wattage (800W up from 400W previously). I will put that through an EA Wizzy 12" cab with a Mackie C200 10" PA speaker on a stand for loud gigs
As others have said, I'm happy that Wals are still being made, although it would have improved the resale value of my Wal if they weren't!!
Chris, best sell me your Wal 5 before it depreciates further
The difference is important to some people and will never be important to others.
I just paid around three times for my fretless '83 Wal what I have recouped from selling my drop-dead gorgeous, superb-playing '71 fretless Fender P/J - was it worth it? Yes. The Wal is astoundingly playable, sounds wonderful and its MY fretless
Hi Clarky. No, its a 4'er sorry! It was the first one made in the current run, using, so I believe, old stock timbers. Its gorgeous, but I've never played it since I bought it, I'm so aware of its value/provenance (snap yourself out of it man. Its only a bass guitar!)
No worries Bob, if it helps BassDirect just sold a few Wals for aroud the £3k mark and Bass Gallery have several FS at £3.5k (mind you, they don't seem to be shifting so I think they are a bit over-priced). If no buyer on BC for it, I would suggest giving Mark at BassDirect a call
Lots of separate ads on here, detailed, with pictures. Much more drooling for us all.
Agreed. The odds of unearthing a decent honest buyer are way higher on BassChat (I've done so many deals yet not had a bad'un yet). Go to eBay if it doesn't shift PS, is the Wal a 5'er in which case I might be interested?
You won't be wanting to trade it for a Tony Franklin then?
No offence meant, Dave ... the Tony Franklin I had (now back in the arms of Legion) was an awesome bass too, I chose this one over the Tony as I loved the mojo but it was a close call -

I have been so blown away by my recently-acquired ’83 Wal fretless that my beautiful ’71 P/J fretless is now sitting in its case unused and more than likely to remain so. Hence I am putting it up FS. This bass was previously owned by several BC’ers (Beedster, Shaggy, Walbassist and BassBod) and is far from all-original, hence the reasonable price at which it has changed hands and the decent price at which I am prepared to sell. The history and specs are as follows: 1. Bassbod owned the bass for 20 odd years; whoever had it before him had taken a maple-necked P bass and made it into a fretless bass with ebony board and active electronics. Bassbod returned it to passive - this does mean there is a black backplate on the rear cavity (although its fairly small and the cavity itself is small, just a continuation of part of the existing cavity through to the rear with no sideways enlargement) 2. The neck is original, although it had an unlined ebony fingerboard pro fitted, as well as being narrowed to a jazz-like width at the nut and oil finished on the back. The original finish is still on the front of the headstock, so it retains the vintage vibe. The machine heads are thought to be original 3. The (alder I assume) body features the original 1970s sunburst nitro finish, but has been well worn and has had a clear overspray in places to prevent further deterioration. 4. The pickups are replacements – the P is a Seymour Duncan SPB1 Vintage series, the J is a Lindy Fralin. 5. The bass was rewired with new Fender-correct CTS 250k solid shaft switch pots, a Switchcraft 1/4" jack, black/white cloth wire and a .047mfd Orange Drop tone capacitor in a volume/volume/tone configuration. 6. The scratchplate and most screws are original, the thumb rest is not. 7. I added a vintage ’71 Precision bridge that I bought off SiBob via BassChat http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=111226&hl= As Shaggy eloquently put it ”In effect it’s a Tony Franklin model, but the real deal”. Its currently wearing Rotosound Tru Bass strings for a DB vibe and the neck definitely prefers slightly bigger gauge strings (I previously had La Bella flat 45-105s on it, whereas I found my initial choice - TI Flats - were just too floppy). It sounds wonderful and on a recent recording session the desk guy thought it sounded more DB-like than my DB (which I also recorded)! Will come in a beat up non-original hard case for protection. I am asking only £850 as I got it from Beedster at a good price (as part of a complex trade) since which time I added the ’71 bridge at a cost of £120. Will post but prefer meet-up as always

Epifani UL115 series 2 speaker cab for sale or trade....
Clarky replied to voxpop's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
I'm in a real delema...... The Phil jones rig, m300 with 6b, has a real hifi sound but lacks that bass cab bloom must of us like. If I switch to the Epifani cab the sound opens up with lots more bass and treble. If only I could have two rigs !!! I could get an Epifani head to go with the cab and sell the Phil jones or keep the Phil jones and sell the UL115. What do I do???
What about the m300 through the UL115 and sell the 6b instead of the Epifani? Doesn't matter if the head and cab don't match manufacturer-wise if it gives teh best outcome. Or keep both cabs for different situations and make some savings elsewhere? -
Epifani UL115 series 2 speaker cab for sale or trade....
Clarky replied to voxpop's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Dag-nabbit or whatever cowboys say in Westerns. Two months ago and I would have snapped your arm off for this but I went and ordered a Barefaced Midget T then (which is admittedly very good). I had a UL115 a couple of years back and have always felt it was the best one-speaker cab I have ever played through. So the best I can do now is bump this thread to the top and add my recommendation -
That's not too bad price and time-wise for what is a totally custom one man operation. The starting point for s 5-string Gus G3 is about £4750...
'kin ell BigRedX - I hope you have taken out insurance on your bass collection then
15 months is 60 weeks. £4,100 divided by 60 = £68.33 p.w. - one pub gig a week and you're sorted. Join a tribute band and it'll be bought and paid for by July
At my rate of earnings per gig I could pay that off in about 27,800 years
