Get yourself some sandpaper. 70 grit to get things started & then @500 grit to smooth things out & make it look worn. I prefer this finish myself...

The Ibby SoundGear basses are great for a multitude of styles. They do rock & metal & have the right image for those genres, but they'll sit nicely in any style of music. Mine started out playing metal & rock, then went to blues & funk, then folk & country & now it's doing DnB & Dubstep. Brilliant bass & I've never played something yet & thought "I could replace the Ibby with that", though a Dingwall did come close.

MarkBass gets my vote. When's the next bass bash down your way? Bound to be a few you could A/B at one, or go see some local bands & see who has wha you like the sound of.

I was going to do my entry all bass & guitar & not use any virtual instruments, but I wasn't getting what I wanted. Next month I might go down the all bass route.

I think you've got an awkward choice & if it was me, I'd try & get a go of each one or something similar from each manufacturer & try before buying.

It's hard enough finding a drummer, let alone a good one. It's a shame that Columbian drummer doesn't live up here, I could use a chap like him & I'm happy not to gig on Saturdays. My last drummer was an awesome drummer that could go from shed building to dusting & keep good time too. He used to play in a Jazz band & loved playing in interesting time signatures (Me & Him used to play some interesting breaks when the guitarists was messing with their amps/pedals). Unfortunately, his job took him north of Aberdeen. Best of luck on finding your drummer.

30 years of playing bass with no band! That's one of the saddest things I've ever heard. Enjoy it.

Sweet. The good thing about being the bassist at a gig is that you can stand at the back next to the drummer if you feel nervous. Remember the important bit... Have Fun!

The combos with the LMII head in them tend to be somewhere between £500-700. You can pick up an LMII for @ £300 & if you want it to sound like an Ashdown, you just turn the VLE filter to full & roll off some treble if needed. Soundslive are on Dean Street in Nookie. They stock Ashdown, Ampeg & Markbass, so maybe worth popping into there?

If you're willing to go 2nd hand, you'll get a good rig from this site. S/H Markbass combo would be in your budget, but before you buy anything, I'd go & try a few rigs.

Go & try a Dingwall. It might tick all your boxes. Have you tried an Ibanez SR? A few weeks round your local bass shoppes sounds like what's needed.

Are you really shocked that a rock band has recorded things like they'd play them live & not had the producer quantize everything to the grid?

I love the Yello/Art Of Noise esque that the drums have. Really good. Looks like there's another tough choice coming when voting starts!

Do you mean a 1x15 combo &a 2x10 cab or is it 2 combos your looking at? If combos, then whatever you like the sound of. If combo & cab, I'd go for either 2 1x15s or 2 2x10s.

The one that's getting on my thruppnies just now is "teh". I type it almost every time I type "the" & then go & correct it. Makes sentences take twice as long!

Silly Q, have you tried removing the compressor?
