1. Long, slow, sweeping, subby, chocolatey phase sounds.
2. I was in Bass Cellar a few weeks ago and witnessed one of the sales staff asking a customer if he was actually going to buy anything before getting the bass he'd asked to try from the window display (this was after the customer having to point it out to him because he didn't have a clue which bass the customer was talking about) . I walked straight out. I never go in that shop if I'm down that way now.
3. There's also the Sansamp ParaDriver DI. Similar to the BDDI but with a mid control and mid shift frequency control. A superior pedal IMO.
4. I take at least two basses to all gigs. Different tunings. Taking back ups would mean me carting 4 or even 6 basses to gigs where there's barely enough space to fit the three of us on the stage as it is...
5. I bought the above mentioned Ampeg 3Pro off Lozz. Thoroughly nice bloke.
6.
I get a very aggressive sound using my fingers, which is down to my 'improper technique'. Instead of my fingers stroking the strings I strike them fairly hard at around the neck pickup, getting an almost slap type tone. Also adding high mids, (or treble depending on your taste), and a bit of gain/overdrive helps
In all seriousness though, I do exactly this^^^. My fingertips are now rock hard and I get a very pick-like tone. If I need the softer finger tone I just swivel my wrist around and play with the sides of my fingers, more like an upright technique. No pedal will sound like a pick, it'll just get you something that sounds like a pedal trying to sound like a pick.
7. I would strongly recommend getting hold of one of these. If you spend a little bit of time getting to grips with it you should be able to achieve a sound that is exactly like using a pick, 100% of the time.
8.
I used to own that bass. It was nice.
It still is!
9. I have no problem with the prices. I've managed to acquire a '95 Fortress 1, 03' Thumb BO and Streamer $$. All three for less than the price of a single one of them new!
10.
I reckon you'd have to defret it. Then fret it again after you'd made the narrowings. You'd also have to be careful that the truss could handle the extra tension.
I know, the fretting is a bugger as they're perfect at the moment. I'd probably want about 2mm off each side at the nut. Width wise it currently sits somewhere between P and J. I'd imagine the neck should be able to take it as I'm not going pencil skinny with it, just like a slightly slinky jazz. Could take the oportunity to get some brass frets fitted too since they're gonna have to come off I suppose.
11. I have a through neck, fretted bass and I want the neck narrower. I've slimmed the backs of necks down myself in the past but this might be abit too much for me to have a go at at home. Looking for people's recommendations of luthiers in the London area. I know we have a sticky topic but I'm after some advice and personal recommendations. Thanks.
12. The title gives it away really. Since I have money to burn I've been entertaining the idea of splitting my signal and running a second channel through guitar gear. I know I'll need to use some sort of crossover to avoid bladdering the speakers if using a guitar cab and I know it'll never sound exactly like a guitar so I don't need reminding of these things. However, I am interested in people's experiences and opinions regarding this kind of set up. I play in an instrumental three piece and, whilst we certainly don't feel our sound needs filling out in anyway, I am interested in acquiring more gear just for making some more noise with and also to give the guitarist a bit more freedom to explore his gear and indulge in some noise mongering should he wish. The idea would be to use it as a rhythm/thickener during guitar solos, second channel for wacky noises and loops, cleaner way of adding certain drive tones when needed whilst never disturbing the original bass tone (and also for posing purposes by having a massive live rig ). I have some useful pedals which could also find their way onto a separate loop for this purpose i.e. Boss HR-2, PS-3, Digitech EX-7. Any suggestions how you personally would go about this, gear you'd use, pros and cons etc, welcomed. Discuss...
13. Hey y'all! My band are holding our first of what will hopefully be many DIY gigs called SHIP SHAPED tonight at Mello Mello in Liverpool. We've got four cracking instrumental bands including ourselves, it'll be a bit mathy, a bit post-rock, a bit whatever you want to call it. For fans of fun times and drinking. Chrik rhodes Grande Duke alpha male tea party It kicks off about 7.30 and it's FREE!!! Any bass chatters make yourself known and I'll buy you a Wagon Wheel.
14.
Or if someone is for all intensive purposes trading with the intention of making money but not letting on.
It's "all intents and purposes". Anyway. I think people's feelings on this matter partly depend on whether you measure your happiness relative to that of others or you find your own absolute happiness. I have sold things on here and in other places very cheaply in the past, normally because I have bought them for a similar price and more often than not sell at a loss. I've always been happy to do so and couldn't care less what the new owner chooses to do with the item. I don't get jealous or infected by someone else's greed. When I'm buying I research what I'm after and know what I'm willing to pay for it. Everyone is free to choose. I understand it's important to keep markets in check etc and there are some items I think are grossly over inflated in price beyond belief, from vintage Fenders down to Deep Impact pedals, but that's the price you pay for being unoriginal!). It's my choice to trade generously as it is other sellers choice to trade selfishly. Dan
15. A rare shot of me standing still on stage. Got a bit of a bass face going on too.
16. It's a talk box pedal used with the guitar. I can't stand Bon Jovi but I've been able to approximate the sound pretty well on bass with a wah and distortion.
17.
We've got a gig on the 16th in St Albans at the Horn which will make or break it. If I get spoken to or treated like sh*t at that one, I'm out. End of story. I would of just quit on the spot if i wasn't so crazy about playing gigs. I am looking for another band though so we shall see what happens
Why not just quit now? It's obviously not working. I love playing live too but I couldn't possibly enjoy the gig after this.
18.
Its like saying rubbing a block of butter on a piece of wood will wear it faster than a rubbing a brick on it, because the butter will deform. Really don't know why you are trying to achieve,
Using ridiculous extremes doesn't serve to prove any point. Who said I was trying to achieve anything anyway? If you remember, I said I'd heard somewhere about this but never claimed it to be true. You launched into a lame internet point scoring battle. I'm done with this. Stop being a tight arse and just buy some new strings.
19. Once the string has flattened off the metal doesn't become magically softer. What are you on about? Just because one material is harder than the other doesn't mean that both won't be worn when in contact with each other. I was saying that I can see how the squared off winds on the string could grind the fret down more easily than a new rounder edged string. It's well known amongst guitarists especialy if you're using stainless strings on a nickel fretted instrument.
20.
Sandpaper is all the same hardness. It also has pointy bits like a new string, when is is flat, like the underside of a worn string, it doesn't sand wood any more. I generally use steels and don't get flats, they are pretty similar ion hardness to the frets. In fact, I've used the same set of steels on my favourite first bass since I first restrung it. No fret wear I see.
I'm not talking about hardness, it's coarseness.
21.
If the string is taken off and put back on, the flats probably won't be in the same place, and if it is soft enough for a flat, it is softer than the fret. A new string would wear a fret much more than an old one in any case.
If it's the same string on the same bass why should it not be in the same place? It it's soft enough to get a flat that doesn't mean the fret isn't soft itself or immune to wear. If you rub two slightly different grades of sand paper together both will still wear away... I can't see how you've decided new string will wear a fret more than an old one either. Here's a picture of what I'd imagine is going in what I mentioned above:
22. I once heard that old strings can increase the wear on your frets. Something to do with the flattened off underside of the string (on round wounds), where it contacts the fret, creating a sharp edge like a burr and wearing the fret down.
23. Can't say for certain but with all solid state Amps I've had there's been a clip light. All this indicates is that you're clipping the peaks in the wave form, these peaks are totally lost. It doesn't mean you're damaging the amp, just letting you know that you're getting distortion because your input is too 'hot'. Whilst the clipping won't damage your amp it's worth remembering that most tranny amps aren't designed to run at full pelt for extended periods of time.
24. I've managed to approximate JCs tone in the past with various Warwicks of mine using a steel pick and a Sansamp Para Driver or a Hartke VXL. If you go and see Tool perform live you're still not going to hear the exact same tone you're used to hearing on the records even if JC is using the exact same gear. That's just the difference between the studio and the stage.
25.
i think its time to let this one die now, as it should have done around page 5
Hear, hear. This thread has lasted even after multiple Hitler insertions. Should I bring up paedophilia and kill it once and for all? Oops.
