I don't totally agree with that, and no i don't want a fight If this was the case we would all turn up to gigs with a bass and lead and go straight into a big PA rig. I have had to do this in the past, when my old amp gave up the ghost at the wrong time, it wasn't a nice experience. The amp may not be the total "tone", but it definatley colours the sound. As you can see from my signature i still have my old Bassman 135, which sounds fantastic. But for my main rig i have now changed from a 400+ all valve/ powerhouse 4x10 to a valve state combo, which i am loving. It is far more versatile for finding different tones, more portable and looks pretty cool too. It also has more power than my old rig. cheers thebassman
Your opinion is BULL$H!T!!! It's what comes before the amp that's important and makes more difference than anything. Sh1t in equals sh1t out. Worth remembering that you're not allowed to toggle with the EQ on the PA so your 'bad sound' could be down to that and also your bass being crap.

 4. On a more serious note regarding tone, I have all ways approached amplification as exactly that. I want it to make what I put into it sound louder. An amplifier doesn't have 'tone', it's what it does with your tone that people are talking about. Some amplifiers are able to approximate a sound that you are more familiar with because you've listened to other people's recordings but there's no guarantee this tone will work in the context of all the other tones being produced by other band members. Some amplifiers #ahem# are actually very poor at doing their proper job since they totally mangle the sound you put in to the point that no matter what goes in you all ways get the same thing out. And who wants to sound like everyone else? Barring the statistical probability of someone eventually guessing right, There's not a single person out there who could listen to my recordings and tell me beyond all doubt what gear I've used to achieve each tone.

 6. You might want to ditch that demo video from the post or at least find a better one. Watching it actually put me off trying the pedal!
 7.
People are slating players who cover a variety of expressions of music, but it is not too much different to a brick layer building a prison, then building an airport! They might have very different outcomes, by they're all made of the same stuff. Ok, so one will need more room for iron bars than the other, but that is all in the detail. The builder might choose to pass through one, and not the other in his life, but his skills will apply to making either.
I imagine loads of builders getting together on Wednesday nights in practise rooms around the country to hone their brick laying skills, build new walls or just throw some buildings up for the fun of it with some mates. They gather at the boundary fences of building sites to watch master builders plying their trade. They spend hours discussing mixes and who's the best layer. They get TAS (trowel acquisition syndrome) every time they pass a builders yard.
 8. How difficult do you think it would be to sand back through all that horrible blue?

 19.
no, you were asking why people play gigs like that and I was telling you why.

but I'm desperate to play gigs, I live for them! As this thread has proved I'll do almost anything for any gig, including buying more backline. As this one's through a 'promotor' we haven't actually had to pay to play, hence I didn't mind buying a crappy combi (£30).
Some people are deluding themselves. Why the big clamour to play live when it's clearly a massive stress and going to be a bit crap? I'm with JTUK on this one. I love gigging but I'd never bend over and take it like some of you guys claim you have to. I do not see not having to pay to play as a bonus either.
 20. You do know it is in your best interests to play the best night possible? Whether it's organised by yourself or a promoter. From what I can gather, you're a lazy person or you only play gigs for lazy promoters? Sucks to be you
 21.
what the fact that instead of paying nothing to play (through a promoter as they book the place and take the hit, and also the profit), you may end up out of pocket (running it yourself)? Not sure how that works to be honest.
simple maths really, the profit being skimmed by the promoter doesn't need to be deducted.
 22.
Plus it also depends on how much a venue is charging to hire out. If it's expensive, you may not make the money back on the door, thus it's costing you to play. Not the best scenario to be in.
By removing the 'promoter' and running an equivalent event yourself this shouldn't be an issue.
