A pub near to me has, over the last couple of years, become a regular venue for bands. The landlord has built the pub up nicely, with good ale on offer too. He's just put out a message on the pub's Facebook page saying that any band that attempts to play the following songs will be fined £40. Wishing Well, Sex on Fire, Teenage Kicks. I laughed when I read it and I suspect it's been done tongue-in-cheek. I know, from conversations I've had with him, that he's a genuine music fan. Maybe some of the regulars have been grumbling to him, I don't know yet. What do you think? How would you feel if the landlord asked you to knock certain songs out of your set?
It seems the gigs are fewer and further between than ever. Even ten years ago, would we have entertained pay to play? Or selling a certain number of tickets before the venue would book? Or being expected to play for free and make the cash back by flogging merchandise to the pub drinkers?
Interestingly there's an article just come on the BBC website about the free comedy gigs at the Edinburgh Fringe. Totally unheard of a few years back there will be something like 800 put on this year. The comics perform at a venue for free and pass a hat around. Since the vast majority of these performers will have had to fund travel to Edinburgh, food and lodgings, is it much different to 'paying to play'? Obviously the similarities with music only go so far, but it does seem to indicate a common trend. There seems to have been a 'game change'. Is it adapt or perish?

Andrew McKinney, who is a member of this forum, plays a Precision with the James Taylor Quartet.

I bought a Phil Jones Bass Buddy off Andy. Excellent, prompt communications. Very well packaged-up and everything has been looked after very well. You can deal with this gentleman in confidence.

Welcome Sarge! Stand easy. Enjoy the forum.

It's always a nice extra when that sort of thing happens. I went to see Andy Fairweather Low a year or so back and Dave Bronze was the unexpected icing on the cake there too. He's a class act is Mr.Bronze. I think my favourite stuff of his is with Eric Bibb, often they played as just a duo. Check out the live album 'An evening with Eric Bibb' (also available on dvd) for a masterclass on how to use an electric bass to support a singer playing an acoustic guitar.
If you guys have ever tried the other Squier with that similar Fender bucker in the neck then you'll know that sounds the bo**cks, it's a very deep Jack Bruce tone.
Spot on. I've been very happy with mine (in the avatar photo). Although my daughter nicks it to play in her indie band. I've found it works best with roundwound strings.

Careful, you might catch the bug! I've done holiday clubs for several years to the point where I've become the de facto musical director/band leader. One thing I do try and do is encourage and bring-on new young musicians into the band. Planning your own exit strategy is crucial in voluntary jobs! I love playing for children. You get instant, honest feedback. If the band or the material is rubbish they let you know! None of that slinking off to the bar or shoe-gazing you get with adults.

Welcome Nobbly. Why the groan? I like Lincolnshire. Most people from Derby do. You can't beat a wet, cold and boozy Bank Holiday in Skegness Enjoy the forum and good luck with the sale. Len

Welcome Igor. Enjoy your time on the forum.

Sometimes it's amusing to be caught up in someone else's fantasy world. Other times it's an irritating waste.

I love acoustic guitars and have got a couple, nothing special though. What I am getting a bit bored of is the over-bright 'glassy' sound that almost all acoustics with piezo pickups DI-ed through PA seem to sound like. This seems to happen at festivals especially.

After several months of faffing around and having to put the banjo on the back burner because of bass commitments I finally did the first gig on it. Just me and a fiddle player I've played with for years on instruments plus. a couple of singers. Great fun. I don't know why I waited so long! Afterwards an elderly couple tried to engage me in a nostalgic conversation about the Black and White Minstrel Show. Apparently it's 'such a shame' it isn't on the tele anymore.
I'm more pissed off with people who think they can tell others what they should do in there spare time.
Where's that 'like' button when you need it?
just cos it's enjoyabe doesn't mean you should do it for free, maybe i should be more specific.. its the gigs where people pay to get in, sound, lighting, security, bar staff, EVERYONE gets paid except the band
That's exploitation. But, I if musicians are fully aware of it, and for whatever still play for free, isn't that ok? Informed choice, and all that.

Depends on the circumstances, but generally no.

Very timely thread! I was rehearsing this afternoon as part of a trio (piano, bass, drums) for a charity event scheduled for the start of August. The event will be very much for the over-sixties, and very middle-of-the-road. Current setlist includes; Moon River, This old House, I'm on the top of the world, Georgy girl, Somewhere (from West Side Story) Born Free Fernando Georgia on my mind. Guilty pleasure - I'm really enjoying it!

Thanks for the link. I enjoyed listening to the set on the show last night. I would have loved to say 'hi' at The Flowerpot on Friday but I've got a gig myself elsewhere. Please tell me, out of interest, when you record for his show to you actually get to meet Paul Jones? Or does he just swan in for his bit of the broadcast? I'm hoping the former because he's always come across as a decent bloke. -
Welcome Nabba. Enjoy the journey. Len

+1 for the Zoom H2. A great piece of kit. The only slight criticism is that it looks and feels a bit flimsy. It doesn't look like it would survive a drop on a hard floor. So, depending on how and where you'd plan to use it, it might be worth a look before buying. In terms of construction, a Boss pedal it ain't! If you'd any plans to come to Derby soon we could meet for a drink and I'll show you mine.

Ah, Nappy Lamere. We'll not see his like again. Or that sports jacket.
