Changed my sig in tribute.
He would probably get barred for putting up some weird installation art in the beer garden.
 2.
Ah, I see. Folk clubs used to be like this in the 1970s, except that they had guest artists who could actually play and sing too! Mostly.
I have got bert jansch live at the 12 bar its a beautiful album.
 3.
I read Skank's comment as a continuation of yours, YouMa: Hence my suggestion. Anyhoo, semantics aside, as an Eno fan myself, I heartily applaud the idea of an Oblique Jam Night. Let's do it!
I think he was actually selling packs of the cards on his website at one point,i wish someone would do a decent documentary on him hes a clever bloke.
 4.
Yeah... "Right, everyone. Music for Airports, track 1-1. And a 1, and a 2, and a..."
I think Skankdevler was referring to oblique strategys, rather than mr enos music.
 5.
Or maybe even some Brian Eno
Ah so your a fan to mr devlar.
 6.
I like that idea with a second card for the key. Reggae in Dbm ..... mmmmmm.
As long as it wasnt taken to seriously and each style was only suggested i think it could be a good laugh and also a learning experience for people.
 7.
It appears to me that lately, 'Jam Nights' are becoming a place for acoustic guitar playing singers to get up and sing their 'original' songs, solo. Very little Jamming actually goes on. As far as getting on stage and playing something you don't know...I've done it many times, only on actual gigs
This is true,kt tunstall types aplenty,it would be nice to have oblique strategy cards at jam nights where the next band can for instance only play reggae, the next funk, folk, etc.
 8.
Welcome to the North East mate. Hope you find the band you're after.
Cheers mate,nice to be back.
 9. Try round the studenty areas, they tend to be better than your hardcore pub heed type pubs.
 10.
I think these things can sometimes be more difficult as the bass player. If you're a lead instrument - guitar maybe but definitely, say, saxophone - you can hang around playing nothing and then come in with the odd line here or there and maybe take a few bars solo. However, as the bass player there's a kind of requirement to keep playing and lay down some groove with the drummer (if there is one). I usually don't look forward to going to these kinds of things to play but when I do I always enjoy it. I was at one with a mate from Leighton Buzzard only yesterday afternoon. Half the time I didn't know what I was doing, the other half I sounded good. Anyway, the audience seemed to like it. You have to accept in advance that you will play some not so good notes - the trick is not to play those notes a second or especially a third time.
+1 unless you are jaco and have a very loud amp jam nights tend to be dominated by A)Guitarists playing long solos. B)The people who organised the jam night.
 11.
Sometimes it's all about jamming on songs... here's the last song of the night from an open-mic my mate runs round these parts. Only some people knew the tune, but it's easy enough to pick up. This is the appeal of these things, IMO.
Cool ,the band and easy riders a great film to,most jam nights i have been to have been contests in who can outwiddle each other.
 12.
I didn't say I couldn't play at all. Ha ha ha. I've been playing for quite a few years now but only ever in covers bands and in an originals band where somebody else wrote the bass parts. I've never really had to improvise in any meaningful way. Mind you that blues scale thing keeps coming up. Would you really just hammer that out regardless of the underlying chord (especially if it's major!) ??
Well no,sorry i thought you knew nowt,i wasnt going to start trying to explain modes and stuff to you,if you know scales mate you can improvise its just feel, its all i do really until i have to actually learn a song for a cover.
 13.
A good point.... I have absolutely no concept of how to improvise. I wouldn't know where to start.
Just learn the pentatonic blues scale first when they shout "its in A" move the scale to the 5th fret and stay within the confines of that scale, and move around in a pattern, that would be a good way to start, basic improvising is just adding little fills and random stuff really.
 14. I love my HW1 jazz i think they are a great deal i even got a badass2 with it,and the neck is great i will get the P bass version next, shame they dont make these with maple necks.
 15.
I'm in two bands and sometimes need someone to cover when dates clash - I've thought of contacting Johnny Depp 'cos presumably he does such things but I can't find a number for him and he's rarely in the area. I'll let you know if I hear of any other line-ups looking for your undoubted talent.
Cheers Howard,regards mark.
 16. Im available for any type of band but ideally it would be something involving Funk/Soul/Reggae/Breakbeat/Alternative/Ambient type stuff.I have just moved to the area and have a few years of gigging experience in london and the south east.I will give anything a go as long as its nothing to do with hair/death metal or greenday.Wedding/cover bands more than welcome.I am in the newcastle/Northumberland area.Cheers. 17. Im sorted now mate cheers though.
 18. Cool i just swapped my qtron for his zoom hope it arrives tommorow.
 19. I think if fender just added blocks and binding to there modern standard jazz and moved the rear pickup to the 70s configuration they would make a killing.
 20. Dimebag from pantera used them a lot i think the high end stuff is pretty good gear, they certainly seem to attract more metallers though,if you are going to shell out a lot i would probably just stick to something everybody knows.
 21. I can read but am very slow,i learnt with tab so i am very lazy at reading.
 22. I really liked them when they were iut in the 90s,they were not cheap if i remember right.
 23. I wish i had your band mate, why not whack in a more obscure brand new heavies tune, forever is nice,or maybe free your mind by JTQ that has some good flute on it.I wouldnt worry about them being not known people might think you wrote them.
 24. Mick was great, but i wasnt to keen on the rest of the effeminate futurists.I like his playing on quiet life.
 25.
How did the "Good Level 42 Songs" thread get to two pages?
I used to like you.
