They're great & can be a one cab .solution for lots of gigs. I have two of them, use them either with my Shuttle 9.2 or a Little Mark ii. They've always fitted the bill for pubs & clubs & anything bigger would be through the PA anyway. Sound quality is great & they like to be pushed with the 9.2 but I usually get told to turn down. I'll put it this way, at one time I had one Focus & a Berg 1/12, the Berg was replaced with the second Focus. I still have both! (Debadged for a more subtle look)

What Higgie said, it all depends on what cord is being implied/played at the point the E is being played as to what function it serves & how to identify it. If it's not the root it'll generally create some feeling of dissonance/tension within the harmony.

Always an option to drop another pot in & go VVT, that's what I did with my 425 & I'm happy with the results!

It's the Hipshot Vintage, dropped straight on & has the right string spacing but no string-through.

I have Big Singles in mine with the standard pre, surprisingly they work really well together.

You can usually figure chords out from looking at all of the harmonic content & not just the bass. For example, if the bass is centered around the root there's a good chance the melody will include the 3rd etc. It's trial & error at first as with most things but as your ears get used to picking out the chord quality & individual notes it gets easier.

With no gigs or rehearsals anytime soon I've decided to challenge myself to learn a song a day in the month of may. Now it's not quite gonna be a song a day because I'm still working & trying to home-school an 8 year old (he's already learnt the blues scale, how to steal an XR3i & how to roll a banging joint) (of course I'm joking). I decided to keep it British & learn all the songs that I love but never had the opportunity to play in bands. Today was A Thousand Trees by them dead good Welsh Gits. I chose it because it's dead bouncy & I really like the lyrical content. The only challenge for me was playing with round-wound strings because since I got the country gigs I've been using flats. No Biggie, my fingers will adjust. Tomorrow I'll be having a go at When The Sun Goes Down by them dead good Northern Gits. For me now at this point in my playing (two decades 😬) I always go for the easy option. I don't have to think too much playing a five string but four strings pickle my melon so it's fives for me. That said I do have a four string Ray & I do still enjoy playing it, just not live. Different strokes!

Yep, string alignment is out up the neck too. Send it back!

Also have a look at the Hipshot Vintage, not sure about the 435 but it was a direct replacement for my 425.

I have two Laklánd basses, the 5502 & a 5501, the necks & the way they feel are identical really with the only differences being the weight & the fact that one has flats & one has rounds. When the 5502 arrived (internet purchase) I thought it must be an error as the box felt too light to be a bass, I'll weigh it one day to see how light it actually is. The 5501 on the other hand is heavy but balances nicely. I bought them both around the same time & was playing a Yamaha BB before that weighs as much as a small hippo.

Not high end or boutique because I'm not really into that but my fave is my Skyline 55-02. I didn't get why weight was an issue for so many players until I played this, it was like a lightbulb moment. It's ridiculously light with a great neck & frets & no real dead spots. Great tone & harmonically rich, a proper workhorse!

Hi Al, I didn't in the end, purely based on the fact that I'd be buying it just to look at (much prefer 35’s these days). As I said the price was a bit on the high side for me & I've embarked on another project that involves a Laklánd Skyline & some vinyl wrap! Watch this space!

They were from a wholesaler that I found on the internet, I can't remember exactly who they were but as @AndyTravis said they're similar to the TRB ones & that was the look I wanted. & You're absolutely right it's a Gotoh 201.

Big Singles, it sounds massive!

I did exactly what you're asking to a Lâkland, the difference is night & day even with the original pre-amp. I went for Big Singles for the super jazz sound & it worked, it's now strung with flats & still sounds amazing!
