+1 to not playing again UNLESS there aren't many venues for you to pick and choose then agree flat fee up front. ...and yes, I'm sure most bands have been shafted to a greater or lesser degree. We played a venue for very cheap on the guarantee that we'd get proper paying bookings if we packed the place [and we did], but the good paying gigs never turned up - I'm happy to name and shame the 'Gallopers' in Bradford.

1. Flanger 2. Compression 3. Overdrive (Marshall amp model) 4. Chorus ...but I also use the Octaver on my amp very occasionally.
Ok, so I've been hanging around on this forum for quite a while now, and one thing that has always surprised me is that some very 'big' names in bass playing seem to get a fairly hefty bashing from some quarters. Two that spring immediately to mind are Victor Wooten and Mark King, and I seen to recall having read negativity on Pastorius and Flea as well. Without wishing to start a feeding frenzy for those that seem to enjoy slating bassists, I thought that it would be good to focus on bassists that everyone loves, those that can do no wrong...
It's probably worth noting that many (most?) of us only put out our opinions on these people when directly asked to as part of question. A lot of the negative stuff is really just 'pub banter', nowt serious. Just because their music doesn't do anything for me doesn't mean that I've got anything at all against them personally.

This Saturday 21st Feb, we have a gig at the White Hart in Burnley. It'd be great to see any NW basschatters who fancy popping along. Music starts after 9pm. Any questions, just shoot. cheers, Jon
nice one,tbh i'm supprised it didn't sell on the day
If I'd had the money and actually needed another bass then I'd have had it. I like jazz shaped necks and I like bridge humbuckers; a great bass for the money!

What does adding a 2 x 10 to a 1 x 15 do to the sound?
Adrenochrome replied to Linus27's topic in Amps and Cabs
Maybe from an "audiophile" point of view. A 2x10" cab may not perfectly acoustically pair with a 1x15", but it's a common solution: there must be a reason for it, and the reason is that many people actually like this speaker configuration. It may be "wrong", but many people actually steer away from high fidelity and clarity and frequency response. I prefer a better engineered cab / pair of cabs, but in the end, it's all down to taste.
It works for me but I'm sure a lot of that is simply getting the 2x10 on top of my tallish 1x15 cab and thus a lot nearer my lugholes! Also the 2x10 is a one handed lift unlike my backbreaking old Laney 4x10 which I think was made from cast iron and housebricks. -
Small amplifiers - little mark II and shuttle (genzbenz)
Adrenochrome replied to colin100's topic in Amps and Cabs
I think class D stuff is great, our main PA has class D amps built into all the cabs which gives a tremendous weight and space saving - very useful when you play quite a lot of gigs and travel a fair bit to get to many of them. I also have a tiny class D g####r amp (Crate) that I use for rehearsal. If it had a bit more clean power (and a DI that didn't mute the speaker outs), then I'd use it for gigging. -
+1 to playing gently through an amp turned up loud, then digging in for certain bits, it's what I try and do. You could always solo your bridge pup, which is usually louder than the blended signal.

IME I've found playing the bass part fairly accurately compared to the original does help my other band members, and when they play/sing fairly close to the original, the audience usually really goes for our versions. We used to just play 'our versions' of the songs, chopping out bits we didn't like, shortening intros/endings etc. In the past few months we've played much more accurate versions. We sound better and our singer has found our cues better for her phrasing etc.

I use a bit of everything! I have the tracks playing on MP3 whilst I'm at work. I sometimes look at chord charts, sometimes glance at the TAB [which is always wrong at some point in the song]. I also have my own system of charting the song out for bass. I also watch videos to check I'm playing sections in the right position and starting/finishing slides in the right place etc. It's quite an organic process though - if we decide to do a new song in practice with not much notice I'll just get hold of the correct chords and listen to a track a few times to get the basic 'shape' of the thing right, then add all the detail later.
Good point! i have not tried BEAD yet but would like to as i rarely go high up on the G. Is there any issues with neck strength on say something like a 4 string jazz with BEAD.
No - most strings used in a BEAD tuning would put less force on the neck than a standard set tuned EADG. Do what you want with tunings, there's nothing stopping you tuning down to C# or C with 50-110s on for instance. We currently tune to Eb to suit our singer and that works fine with my 45s.

Yorkshire Bass Bash - 15th Feb '09 (NOON - 5 PM)
Adrenochrome replied to Born 2B Mild's topic in Events
Yeah, Yorkshire Bass Bash '09 was excellent! Big thanks to Phil for organising this event, and for Keith for the raffle and all the money raised for a great cause from that. For me, it was great to put faces to names. It was the first time I'd tried headless basses, fanned-fret, 6 -string, 9-string and Chapman stick, EUB (first upright bass of any sort), as well as many other quality basses of many varieties. Thanks so much to all of you for sharing. BTW Prose' maple necked black jazz with the bridge humbucker is the business! Jon -
Some songs are drop tuned to C. Even though they're metal, the songs are quite mellodic. I really like them.
I quite like them and have seen them live. I felt like my eyebrows were being singed and I was about 100m away by the sound desk when the flamethrowers were on. God knows if they have a big enough following?
Is this the thread for name badge?
YUP! See y'all tomorrow. I will not have to bring the ankle-biters, so I'll be there sometime before 1 when they're despatched. -
Brenda Lee (1 song inparticular, 'I'm taking my time')
We did 'Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree' at a Christmas gig once... does that mean I've played some country?? NNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My strings get wiped down and cleaned in situ on a very regular basis. I don't change them unless they break and I absolutely couldn't afford to change them every few gigs so I have no choice in the matter.
Sundays are good for most shops to be open in Harrogate. Or there's free live entertainment at the Blues Bar (town centre) on a Sunday aft. http://www.bluesbar.co.uk/diary.html
Yup, if it'd been 2 weeks later you could have watched me strutting my stuff with AoS... [in the 1/2m sq of stage space I'll have]. Then again, I might'nt have been able to do the Bass Bash as well, so probably a good thing! -
Interesting point. Did you find that you had to dial in a lot more top end or mids running two 1 x 15???
I use a MAG210 as an extension cab (or stood on end on its own in tiny venues) and it's got the deepest sound of any cab I've had (could be a bit shy in the high-mids and highs perhaps?). -
Hi all! A question for any Harrogate-dwellers out there.. I'm still hoping to come along, but I might bring Mrs. WoT and Bambina WoT as she fancies a look around the town. So... are there many shops open in Harrogate of a Sunday? Y'know.. shops that ladies like that sell flowers and posh bubble-bath.. that kind of thing?
There certainly are shops like that in the centre of town, couldn't recommend any though as they're the kind of places I avoid! Send 'em to Betty's Tea Rooms (right in the centre of town by the cenotaph). -
No (based on what I've heard so far).

How often do you guys practice between regular gigs?
Adrenochrome replied to greyparrot's topic in General Discussion
We gig about once a week and have 1 band practice a week, though practices will probably go to about 3-4 a month when the new guitard knows everything properly. Apart from that I practice as much/little as I need. It might be 30 minutes while watching the rugby/footie on telly perhaps once a week. If I need to learn new stuff I'll do 2 hours a night until I know it. -
Go for it! You should easily be able to get all the songs at least charted out and cheat sheets ready by Sunday. Watch out for the occasional RHCP song in drop-D tuning.
