1. ...maybe it'd work for things of relatively low value? For what it's worth I have a few gigs that I have to travel decent distances for (5 April Cleethorpes, 11 April Glastonbury, 19 June Stourport) all from Harrogate and I'd happily take something along with me.
2.
I find a paddling pool full of baby oil helps.
...for after the gig???
3. I use 2 wristbands on my right forearm whenever I gig. It's not a problem when rehearsing, just under lights and the sweat makes my arm stick to my bass.
4. Big thanks for this. I actually attacked this a year or so ago by reading from a copy of the handwritten score. I really struggled with the reading AND working out the fingerings/positions etc. I shall have another go using this
5.
I'm pretty sure I'm nowhere near but I read a synopsis of the book (on W*kipedia no less) and it seemed to indicate that to was 10,000 hours of doing a particular activity rather than just practicing. It used the example of the Beatles clocking up more than 10,000 hours of gigging time together in Germany prior to becoming massive back here being the reason that they were such virtuoso performers as a live band. Not specifically their individual musicianship.
A good example. A few of us from Yorkshire I'm sure will know Tony Bianco, and he honed his skills playing disco in the clubs of Milan into the small hours on a regular basis when he was a kid. Tony's an absolute monster at fingerstyle playing and slap, though often seen on sounddesks in Yorkshire these days.
6. I usually bid in the last minute. I've picked up 2 CDs I wanted this week for 65p and 99p respectively. Many people don't fully understand about the maximum bid thing and often start putting lots of separate bids on, or bid more than they really wanted to pay. I'm not going to bid early and encourage those people.
7.
Interesting that you mention the Cirrus. I played the cheapie one and the US one... and have to say, for playability and sound, it blew the US one away. 35" won't be a problem, you won't even notice. Anyway, what sort of budget are you looking at?
Good call. The upper horn is very long so reaching all frets shouldn't be an issue.
8. I would advocate a rigorous programme of weight training, focussing particularly on the pectoral and triceps groups of muscles. Then use your newfound strength to beat your guitards and drummer into playing more quietly.
9. See my sig! I've never been able to afford any but perhaps the cheapest Fenders anyway so I've never had the option... Also I'm quite happy for my cheap stuff to get bashed around in some of the grotty pubs we play. edit for spelling
10. Last night, Acklam Iron & Steelworks Club in Middlesborough. We took a big PA and decent lights and it was up there with out best ever gig:
11. No, not for a second since I started. However I was a late starter on bass and I think I'm making up for lost time.
12.
I don't understand what the difference is between the first two options.
I assume the first option means playing so gently that you can't play a quiet passage any more gently. I voted for the middle option but i certainly used to be the third option which I blame on too loud guitards!
13. Couple of points - if you go for the 2 pup, 2 output way, do you trust the average soundman to reproduce both signals properly and blend them well? In normal(ish) tunings, you might want to back off the distortion a tiny bit to get a fuller sound and maybe use a level boost during guitar solos?
14.
...I haven't been in Spectresound in Bingley for ages but it was always a fave - probably nostalgia from the good old days when it was JSG. Climbing over loads of Marshall valve tops and finding a dozen 70's Fender basses etc. Happy days.
This was one of my main haunts but it's been closed down for a good few months now. I bought 3 basses there over the years.
15. Sorry to say it, but usually wherever's cheapest on t'interweb [family to feed]. I've found PMT to be very helpful but slow. They sent my bass back to Peavey to have the preamp replaced under warranty even though they didn't sell me the bass - very pleasant but not quick in despatching it. They had a good selection of giggable basses to try when I was there [not just the cheapest like some shops].
16.
Gary's current bassist is a guy called Tim Muddiman. David Brooks plays keyboards, although he has played a little bass on Numan tours in the past.
The keys player played a bit of live bass when I saw 'em about 4/5 years ago.
17.
They must do something right as they are very popular!
Simples - value for money. I got a new cab, good enough for doing decent paying gigs for ~£100.
18. Hi there. Welcome. Ask away!
19. No review of that model but most Peaveys are outstanding value. Both my main bass and main back-up/practice bass are Peaveys.
20. From when my old Garage Rock band played Joseph's Well: "not Glam enough to be Glam ... and not punk enough to be punk, but its somewhere in between"
21.
Im hearing from people, you have to file slots for the saddles on a BAII..whats that all about???
No, not compulsory. The strings will wear a bit of a groove themselves, or you can file a groove in if you want.
22. Covers band - rock/pop/punk/metal Occasional depping for covers bands also, might have an interesting assignment coming up doing modern rock & metal.
23.
Jon, i am going to pop down in the near future. I almost knocked you off your bike last week. You blended in with all the bright yellow tress and houses i see
Ha ha, me the flying banana!
24. Get yerself up to the Tap'n'Spile jam night on a Thursday about 10pm. Even for just half an hour, talk to people and let them know you want to play in a band; there are a few musos turn up. Mark the guy that runs it is a decent bloke. Jon
25. It's excellent. Maybe you've just changed the feel of the track as you're playing quite different stuff to the guitar and emphasising different beats to the guitar?
