1. "B" String? Is it a 'Ray 5? If so, they're not prone to the weak G syndrome. All other comments made previously still apply... If you're playing a 4 tuned BEAD, then please ignore me!
2. Whilst you may not recoup all of your outlay IF you decide to sell on, it's still a worthwhile exercise, as what you learn about the instruments is invaluable. Not to mention what you learn about set-ups and solving problems which may arise. There's also a chance that you may hit upon a sound / tone / feel that you love.
3.
Starwars? Surely the best film score ever, awesome
Except John Williams heavily borrowed from Strauss, Wagner, Mahler, Holst etc. Perhaps TOO heavily.
Saturday Night Fever.
Yep. This.
Was the music in 28 Days Later all done by Godspeed You, Black Emporer?
AM 180 is by Grandaddy (scene in the taxi, driving North) A big +1 to; Judgement Night (various) Dirty Harry (Lalo Schiffrin) Clerks (various) Got to say that James Horner's work on Star Trek II is lovely, even if certain elements of his themes re-occur in other films that he's scored.
4. I've loved every Hartke rig / combo I've ever used, mainly HA3500s with 4.5XL cabs. Sounded amazing with my Warwick Infinity SN4 (elixir strings) Oddly enough, one of the rigs was laid on by a venue in London. I've never owned one, but if I were buying a rig from scratch, I definitely consider the cabs at least...
5. I put 7150s (I think) on my MIA Fender Jazz the first time I changed the strings. For £13, they were perfectly acceptable. If you've got a bigger budget, DR Sunbeams are lovely strings...
6.
You've mainly got to work with the drummer. The number of people who are bolted on the front of the rhythm section doesn't change how that works. So a 3 or 10 piece band shouldn't make any difference to the bass. Then it's everyone else's job to work with you.
I had the great pleasure of working with 2 guitarists, neither of whom played a single solo in a single song, or even assumed the roles of "lead" and "rhythm". They had their own thing going on, which allowed me to slot in and play lines which harmonised with both. We had an amazing frontman, but a drummer who always seemed to lag a little, and you could always hear me emphasizing beat "1" (rock band) to try and drag him into line with the rest of us. I am struggling a bit in my current 4-piece (power trio plus vox) in that there isn't much room to manoeuvre. I have to hold the rhythm lines while the guitarist solos, and lock back in for the verses and choruses. Great drummer, though. Solid, never too flashy, and a nice guy. Is it odd that I find being in a 3-piece more claustrophobic?
7. I have an MXR M-80. It's okay, I suppose. Tough, alright DI (The Hartke VXL's is superb). Still don't get on with the EQ, mind. At least you can get 3 basic sounds; Clean >> EQ only >> EQ + Distortion But alas, No Distortion only!!! I find it irritating that so many units impose their EQ upon you. I've yet to find a really good OD/Distortion that just keeps the tone of my bass and gives it a little bit of drive. Best so far? Ampeg SVP Pro, but it's unreliable, you can't switch the drive with a pedal, and it seems to suck the bass out quite a lot (mid-range can be lovely, though!) Valve tone? M-80? Not really IMHO. YMMV, though.
8. Now SOLD
9. Good Stuff! Better change your Avatar before the boys in Germany see it.. Just photoshop a Warwick over the 'Ray5!
10.
I presume you didn't get my PM yesterday morning then? Oh poo...
Check your Inbox! I put it on hold before I contacted you as I've had some other enquiries, and didn't want any further offers coming in once I'd provisionally accepted yours.. Hope that clarifies matters! Alex.
11. Now on hold pending the usual
12. Bump (again)
13. Don't overlook the Ibanez SR506!! It'll give you some change, too! Otherwise, look to the Yamahas already mentioned... Or see what S/H throws up...
14. On doit offrir quelquechose en plus de Talkbass!!!
15. Bienvenue a BassChat! Bassist Professionel?! Bienvenue Encore! Alex
16. As previously mentioned, any sound changing feature (particularly drive and / or EQ stages) that can't be footswitched Ampeg's SVP Pro is guilty as charged on the Drive part! Not a great fan of the Trace Elliot Pre-Shapes either. Hybrid Valve/SS Pre amp stages where the valve isn't run hard enough to make it sound like more than a muffled version of the SS part of the stage (Trace again!) And from a design stand point- 4x10 combos.. Why? More weight, less flexibility, often compromised cabinet performance (to keep the weight down)
17. Now down to £550 or PM me an offer.
18. Absolutely everything you can get your hands on! No, really! Considered going second-hand? There's some lovely stuff in the For Sale section, and your money'll go a LOT further...
19. If it plays good, sounds good and feels good, it IS good. Otherwise, DGAF, and that ain't no progression.
20.
Does it surprise you ?? Are their any Sig models 100% identical to the one the artists play?
Hmmm Hows about the Level 42 30th Anniversary Status King Bass Yamaha Attitude (the original and/or II) Fender Roscoe Beck Fender (Stu Hamm) Urge Gary Willis' GWB Ibanez (though not the cheaper one) Vigier Roger Glover Excess Fodera Yin-Yang (as used by Victor Wooten) Zon Michael Manring Hyperbass The deciding factors in all of the above being either; 1) The bass was good enough in relatively standard trim and was adopted by the artist with few or no changes or 2) The artist and manufacturer collaborated and built a signature model from the ground up- as in the case of the Roscoe Beck and Urge and (not quite) The Yamaha Attitude. All 3 of these basses are nothing short of formidable, as those hereabouts who own them will confirm!
21.
My Ashdowns don't have any feet but I have a pile of Trace rubber feet that I am going to fit before the gig next Friday
Them there are good feet. The old solid lump of rubber with a washer in the middle. Use a nice BIG screw, and they'll never come off. My Trace 1153 has swivel casters on the long side, and feet on the short side. Roll it where you want, up-end it, and off you go. As for amplification, my trick for reducing acoustic feedback is not putting a head on top of cabinets whenever I can. Yep, some of it'll inevitably come via the air, but why directly mechanically couple your (amp) head to the source of the vibration? I generally put mine behind or off to one side, on a chair or beer crate etc.
22. Back to the top for another go!
23. I think..... It's a phenolic board that's never, ever been cleaned. Kind of like the rest of the bass.
24.
Make friends with the drummer as soon as possible, then enjoy.
Deffo this. Not for nothing do we have our own bit of the band called "The Rhythm Section"! Also: Be yourself Enjoy Yourself Do any necessary homework/practice before you go- So you're as good as you can be Remember that you are auditioning THEM as much as they are auditioning YOU. Cliched, but true. All the best!
