Looking at buying one for my standby blues bass and wondered if anyone has useful input. Clearly it all depends on its history but was 2005 a particularly bad or good year for these puppies?

As title really. I've got an almost new set of La Bella 760 flats, cut for a Fender type head-stock and only been played for about four hours. Not quite my sound so if you have a set of D'Addarios of a similar vintage and want to swap I'm up for it. I could also sell for £28 inc delivery. Price new £44.

For those who think blues bass should be a melodic drum and never allowed above the 5th fret, and certainly never ever given a solo, and anything else is the Devil's work, I'm gonna call old Nick right out of his hole. Is there anyone on here who plays blues and has the hippy/ loony left/ revolutionary audacity to play a little bass lead? I'm not looking to start yet another bored Sunday morning exchange on the role of the bass, just to find out if any blues man or blues band is exploring the possibilities of a lead solo for the bass now and again. If so and you're that person I'd like to open a chat.

Hi, wondered if I could pick the brains of those with experience of upper end Ibanez basses. I have tried and loved everything about the SRSC805. But at near to a grand new I can't justify the expense and they're rare as hen's bollocks 2nd hand. Can anyone say which of the models a little further down the price scale offer a similar playing experience (obviously without the single cut aspect). Ta.

http://www.tonerider.../precision-plus. Ive tried all sorts of PB pup and the Tonerider blurb is spot on - the sound is classic P bass but just a whisker of - not hot exactly, but lively? Warmer? Like the difference between crunchy and smooth peanut butter... er..

Toneriders for me - awesome sound and less than 40 squid. And - I may be gullible - the Kiogon loom sold by the eponymous master on here is a must too.
That's quite OK, of course, but on what archive film footage did you astonishingly spot him by chance?
Think you may have quoted the wrong person. But if you're still interested, my great grandad was involved in supplying the army with horses in WW1, and resettling the few that were left atterwards. In 2014 a television station ran archive footage of the horse resettling, my cousin happened to be watching and recognised the old boy from a family portrait. I was able to record the footage and grab a still. I thought he might like a run out 100 years on so he's been my avatar ever since.
Why not go modular and use 2 smaller cabs like Barefaced 1x10s? My cat weighs more than those!
+1 I had one and had to weigh it down with a beer glass to stop it blowing away. It is a low way down bendy over lift though, being close to the ground. And realistically you'll want two, so suddenly life's getting expensive.
/\ Agreed. Bring something original to the covers you do. Keep it interesting.
and that is the lesson I will take away

Thanks guys, I stand corrected... sorry, didn't realise I'd ruffle so many feathers. And I've learned something, which was the object of asking.

Looking at Norfolk Band Network on FB I was struck that there seem to be an awful lot of bands who ID themselves as 'cover bands' or 'influenced by...' So where's all the originality gone? Did the seminal 60s and 70s groups do covers? " We're called The Who and we're going to be doing Chuck Berry numbers..." By way of balance I am impressed at the number of young bands who are inventive, either in versioning or coming up with originals. Last Sunday I saw the awesome Dove and Boweevil do Stormy Monday so differently I didn't recognise it until half way through. Am I being a Victor Meldrew here? Is being a covers band a cop out? And how to make playing covers fresh and standout? Not wanting to wind anyone up or upset them, being fairly new to the band world just wanting to learn something. EDITED

Oh, teed... now I got a pro bassist I know saying he couldn't get rid of his Statii quick enough cos he hated the hifi sound. Guess I just gotta bide my time until i get to hear and make my own mind up.

Get thee behind me Satan! You're not helping my GAS But thanks pmjos, sounding more and more tasty and glad I've got first approval on it! Can't wait until the vendor gets it over here for me to cop a feel.

My avatar. The pic on the left is actually my great grandfather, astonishingly spotted by chance on some archive film footage from 1919. I don't look like him.

Hi Here's the stuff I needed to know when I started and didn't get:

The role of bass is to play chords, just like a guitar, only you play each note rather than strum as you would on a guitar
You can get away with playing root notes to start. So for a C chord, just play a C note in time to the music /drums. You can build from there.
You may have to learn the basics playing along to songs in your bedroom but get into a band ASAP
Don't assume the local bass teacher is any good. He may be, or he can be a great player with no idea how to teach.
There are really good online courses for free (talkingbass.net) and paid for (Scotts Bass Lessons)
Have fun. With all due deference to other commentators, starting with learning scales is NOT the way to go at first.
If confused or stuck, ask on here.
