And an E-C 5 or a 6 make things similarly easy if playing classical, avoiding long stretches and gallops up to the 24 fret.

Ne. In principle you're right but the real world usefulness is to be able to access low D, Eb and E but that little bit higher up. Not necessarily the low B and C. With a six in particular you can gallop straight across one set of frets without having to dog leg back and fourth like on a 4. The ONLY thing I hate about 6s is losing the plot on so many strings. Life may be easier on a 6, but the pictures and string spacing are easier on a 4. 5's to me are neither fish nor fowl.

I have actually seen something similar to the Rumble 30 used in a big gig context. Even though it's quiet with no headroom, it gives nice sound. Stick a PA mic up to it and voila - nice sound, loud.

If you just want 30w in a bedroom, a Fender Rumble is brilliant and good value. the Roland series of Bass Cubes are awesome too.

From my experience I would urge you not to buy an amp under 100w. If you're any good you will transition away from home practice fairly quickly and then you will need something with more cojones. For px with a band you're really going to need 100w + . Your budget is very very tight though so needs must perhaps. But as someone else has said the amp is just as important in the sound chain as the bass so don't scrimp on it. So many people are moving to lightweight gear now you may get a bargain by simply picking up something slightly uncool and heavy for a song.

What an interesting point. Never thought about that...

I have small hands and find the neck and spacing at the nut on my Ibanez perfect. The trouble with some 5s is too narrow spacing.

I bought my SRSC805 neck thru single cut for a project which is now nearing completion. In very good condition, just a very few small dings. With 24 frets and strung E-C its fabulous for chords and classical pieces. Strung B-G it's a funk machine. Small body and very lightweight and nicely balanced for a 5 string. And where are you going to get a single cut bass away from several grand more from Zon or Fodera? Currently strung B-G. Comes with a boxed Glockenklang 3 band preamp which itself costs over £100. I haven't felt the need to fit it, but I'm told it makes awesome even awesomer. This bass retails at around £950, but I just want what I paid for it - £625 For all the usual reasons I'd prefer collection or would deliver within a 50 radius of Diss, Norfolk. I can post but at insured courier rate, which won't be cheap given its value. The only trade I'd be interested in would be a Hohner B Bass VI with a good deal of money coming my way, or a Yamaha TBR 6.

Strange how some folk can’t seem to understand that FT means Trade (that’s like a marble swap, kids), and ‘I don’t want to sell and I’m not interested in anything else’ means, um - just that.

As title really. My Twin is in great condition, barely a mark on it with cover but I fancy a change, that's all. Ever so slight Tolex lift (see pic) but nothing for a Barefaced cab. If anyone's within an hour's drive of mid Suffolk with a MB 410 4 ohm in similar condition and wants to swap the other way, kit me up. Don't want to sell, don't want anything else thanks.

Advice needed about entry to 5 string
lownote replied to meltedbuzzbox's topic in General Discussion
No one has said much about the other 5 - strung E-C. This is a bit specialist but the high C string gives you access to some great sounding chords and soloing, as well as helping you avoid journeys way up high on the G string on classical pieces. If you don't play high on a piece then mentally 'park' the C string and you've a 4 string with slightly closer string spacing and a bit more reach over the wider neck. Or you could get a six.... -
Advice needed about entry to 5 string

Scott Devine has done an excellent couple of reviews on transitioning to 5 and 6 string basses. The fiver one is here - don't worry about the title, its just to get people watching. And if you have 500 notes, I'd seriously look at the Sire range before moving on to any other lines.
