Mark at Bass Direct has been very helpful and suggested a mixture of Nordstrand pups and Klockenklang pre. Trouble is that with other fettles will likely clear £400, for which I could buy a decent bass of specific purpose.

Got a slightly tired and bog standard one of the above and want to pimp it for solo work (I know, I know...bass shouldn't be used for such blasphemy). Anyone got any advice on the following: String BEADG or EADGC? Replace standard 5 string EMG jazz pups with ......? Replace pre amp with ....? or leave as is? Best strings for dusty end work?

I'll lay good odds you can find a fretted Sire as a swap for your FL. I was advertising for just such a trade a couple of years back.

Funnily enough, bass trainer Scott Devine has posted a seminar in which he frequently cross-references to the sax experience as a guide to bassists wanted to do improv up the top end. Seeing as your horn seems to fetch up to € 5k, I should use it - if its usable. Old instruments doesn't necessarily mean great to play.

yup seems to work - even a 1/16th

I have had Tonerider pickups on my P bass for a couple of years. Great value for money. They work great with thump, depth and grunt on the bottom two strings. But just recently I've started to think that the response on the D and G strings is a little more treble and ... thin. So the presence isn't balanced across the full string set. Now I've noticed it I hear it all the time. Anyone else notice this? Or do i just need to get a life?

Link doesn't seem to work

Not sure how much we can discuss stuff on a sales thread, so if this is bad spank me and remove. I'd just comment the ramp. On mine I ran it to fit square with the end of the pickups. I also used double sided tape so i could remove it without affecting the look of the bass. On this VI I left it as wood, on my previous VI I panted it black - both looked good.

Now discovered Scott Paddock. Awesome saxist and teacher and his lessons are FREE. Find his channel on YouTube.

It was/is. I had a 4 string too, only in red; great bass for what they go for. I turned it into a fretless, at which it was great, and sold it to Bryan Adam's manager. If Jabba's site find offers as much as I hope that will indeed be a discovery, as otherwise spares are as rare as hen's whatsits.

ah have a headed 5 string B Bas Pro- I'm a hohner home boy. Pretty much in the top 3 of my 30 bass history was a B Bass 6 string shod with Overwater strings. Magic.

The only Hohner parts source i've found is this: http://www.sonor.com/fileadmin/hohner_group/hohner/09_documents/price_lists/Spare_Guitar_Consumer.pdf

Fretless - Replace the fingerboard or replace the neck?
lownote replied to BassApprentice's topic in Repairs and Technical
seems to me it must be far easier and cheaper to bolt a new neck on than size, prep and affix a new fingerboard. -
Scott has just posted a review of fretless. Don't take the title too literally, it's more about fretless pros and cons... Everyone has to try one, but the general consensus is Mwah and vibrato are fun for five minutes, the real pros play it like a fretted bass, so why not buy a fretted bass and make life easy.

I've had 30+ basses of all sorts but the best one I've had in a band was a MM Fender P. It's simple and just does the job. Desert island disks bass - "the Bible , Shakespeare and a P bass - what else would you have?"

*WITHDRAWN* Hohner B Bass professional V 5 string Now £175
lownote posted a topic in Basses For Sale
This Hohner Professional B-Bass V 5-string active/passive bass is constructed in beautifully figured Maple (Natural matt lacquer finish) with a solid Rosewood fingerboard – a real stunner. These basses are very very rare. No, really. I have had an eye on the Hohner B Bass market for six years and in that time I have seen two come up for sale in the UK. It features neck through contoured body construction, has a slim fast neck and an easy-to-play low action. There are two high-quality J-style pick-ups (EMG branded Steinberger) and an active-passive switch with red LED indicator light. There are individual volume knobs for each pickup and a stacked bass/treble knob below the bridge. The active electronics are accessed through the rear, and take a standard 9v PP9 battery It is a lovely looking instrument with really deep tones from the solid wood through neck construction and has a great sound well suited to pop and similar. But, while remarkably unblemished, there's a short crack between one wing and the the body from the bridge to the back of the body, which looks to have started at one of the bridge screw holes. You can see this clearly in the pix. It doesn't affect the playing and hasn't spread in my ownership. Also, the truss rod cover has been lost at some point and replaced with trimmed piece of black plastic. Really not noticeable as its mostly hidden behind the strings. Almost new set of D'Addario XLs. Now £175 plus £25 insured cartage - although with my experience of couriers recently I'd rather you collected. Will consider trade with cash your way against nice Fender Precision MM. I don't want anything else so please don't offer me anything, pretty please. -
Agreed that the 'going off piste' has to be talented and meaningful, but if so, yes, do it. So much jazz and jazzists are stuck in stone which surely goes against the whole idea? But what I do know? Nuffing.

Here for sale is my Trevor James "the Horn"Revolution tenor Sax. These are well known, good quality instruments from this renowned maker. It's in very good condition. The pads and metal bits work as they should and it recently benefited from a light professional overhaul and adjustment, although it could probably do with a full service at some point. Be aware that while it works and looks fine it's not new. It has had plenty of use in its life and has the marks to show it - there are a few dings and scratches and a poor bit of soldering around the base of one pillar, although this doesn't affect the playing and is only visible from close up. It comes in its hard case, which has a few marks around it but protects the sax well. The sax comes with all the accessories you could need: quality strap, almost-new D’Addario B5 mouthpiece (similar to a Yamaha 4C), quality ligature, new pad saver, Stagg stand, even a ‘Reedjuvinate’to keep your reeds sparkly fresh. The accessories alone are worth over £75. Will post but at £25.
