Digesting all the above opinions it would seem actually a Sire would probably be perfect. Only Thomann took mine back because I was not worthy. Gonna try D'Addario NYXL strings on my Sqier P, it's cheaper.
Just about to chime in and say a Stingray. An actual single pickup MM Stingray though, not a copy or a P bass with an extra pickup (in the wrong place). Plus the OP has been through every other type of bass so it's probably time!
Your Indonesian Squier VM P5 will do it all.
You mean the one I just had to sell because herself invoked the one in one out or no supper rule

For blues = P bass is my understanding. But if the idea is to do a bit more diddly diddly up the dusty end than is usual in blues, quick shake of jazz, plus maybe a dollop of funk, even (no, how awful) a hint of slap once in a long while, have you been down this road and come up with solid suggestions? P bass, J bass, 4, 5, 6 string, soapbar, splits or j bass pick ups? Before anyone rightly says 'whatever, any bass will do, just play the b***** thing', I agree. But if the bass rack is almost empty and the wallet open, which way?

Has anyone here owned an Ibanez SRSC805 single cut? If so, I'd really like your beedback on positives and drawbacks. Many thanks.

Thanks Richard. i must say it was a very odd longwinded altercation with Thomann, with them at turns being patronising, inisisting there was nothing wrong with the bass, telling me to return it, then saying they knew all along it was a design issue and then taking the bass and refunding without a 'by your leave', along with £26 worth of strings and straplock pins. Call me a clever clogs, but the way it could have gone was this: Me: Is it me or is it impossible to thru string a V7 4? Thomanns: It's a design fault. Do you want your money back? Me: No Thomann: Fine, sorry. I'm not going to be so stupid as to warn people off using Thomanns, but don't expect an ounce of intelligence if you need to deal with customer disservice.

As the OP I'd just like to say that I liked several things about this bass: light weight, smokey pickups, good B tone, good finish, including smooth fret ends. All that it needed in the end was a KiOgon loom to unleash its goodness.

Oh, I've done that. Sire shuffle their feet and change the subject "Oh, look there's a vole".
-
No, if the bass is correctly intonated the E (especially) and A holes are directly below the saddles, creating a 90 degree break angle. In fact the E hole is half under the saddle.

To tie up an issue that has been raised on here before and again by me recently, Thomann now admit you cannot through-body string a V7 4. It's official. They say: "The string through version does not work for the E- and A–string on these basses. This is a popular problem of this model. All Marcus Miller basses of this type have that construction fault. That is why we are sure that a new bass of the same type wouldn´t help you. We are sorry that It is also a fault that can´t be repaired." I'm well pee'd off. All I wanted to know was the above but they insisted on me returning the bass. Now they've kept it and refunded my money without my leave, meaning I've lost €30 worth of brand new strings and straplock pins. of course I've raised that with them now, but what a bloody hoo ha. It's no good having a thorough customer support system if its not cored on an ounce of common sense.

looks like you might need to raise the saddles a tad to cope with the new break angle

Polish or oil?

Anyone tried this and can feedback on issues? Thinking of trying an XLR feed from the mixer into an iXLR adaptor and thence the iPhone.

I recently bought a VM P 5 which surprised me by being well made and a fantastic sound. Had to install a KiOgon loom to get it, mind you.

Back to my issue with the thru body string holes in the bridge being at an absurd angle to the back of the saddle, if not partially beneath the saddle in the case of the E string. I have now heard back from Thomann. Customer support say Guitars say my problem arises from trying to intonate the bass with short scale XL 170 strings. As it clearly says Long Scale on the string pack someone doesn't know their arse from their elbow. They also patronisingly told me to find someone who knows how to intonate. I'd be grateful to hear from Fleabag and anyone else without V7/4 issues just how much clearance they have between the stringing holes and the saddle and what strings they're using. Edit: Thomann now say they want the bass back for evaluation. That will take for ever and from what's said earlier this is a known issue. Agh, at the end of the day's its just a niggle. -
I am currently using the Markbass 250 Blackline with an Ashdown M10 cab and that works well. Also have a Gez Benz Shuttle 3.0 which is a good and a bit more 'modern' sounding. It also has a little more flexibility on frequency response settings.
Loved my mark bass black line 250. Awesome sound and build for knockdown price -

I's more interested in their upcoming 6 string. I suppose it will be a M7 variant, which isn't for me with those long horns. -
My VM P 5 was astonishingly light, and when I checked on the GAK site they're listed as basswood body.

Not quite on the market yet, it's a Pj. You'll likely find pix on their fb page - or here -
I have an Affinity P bass, bought secondhand for £150. It's really light and the fingerboard is pretty much good. It's made of bass wood. The neck doesn't stay in rock solid tune but it doesn't wander far out. I spent £39 on a Tonerider pup, £29 on a Kiogon loom and fitted some Wilkinson tuners which it didn't really need. Now it's an awesome bass with lovely tone and I would challenge anyone to tell the sound from a grown up P bass. Just had a VM 5 P for a week and was very impressed, but only after fitting a Kiogon loom. Scott Devine recently opined that all you need is a Squier with mods, and even cited two pros who climbed the career ladder with unmodded Squiers.

I think it's like they always focused on the fiver as the mother ship. I had an early five and, to echo you, could not fault it apart from the weight. i've had two fours with niggles. UPDATE Sire just emailed me to say they're alerted their manufacturing team to this issue. Lets see if anything happens.
