1.
I like the look of the body (presuming as it looks to me that it's slightly more squashed/elongated shape than a true Rick) but the neck looks wrong on it, a more Rickesque neck and headstock would have been better
They've been there and done that. I think Mr. Hall probably had a word in their ear - hence this. Can't help but feel that maybe a Fenderbird inspired design might have been better...
  2.
Genuine 1970's Herco Flex 50. Worship it!
I've got one of those! Only it's grey and says Flex 75 on it. I bought mine in the early eighties but I've heard that the construction is almost identical. It's a bit of a boat anchor but has sustain for days! Only used for a few gigs before I put it away in my uncle's loft and forgot about it until now. I wonder if he's still got it?
  3.
Good for you mate! Just make sure it's natural. I love to dance to music, so I can't really help moving about on stage. The bigger the stage the more I move. Learn to dance.
Excellent advice. I was about to suggest just dancing myself. If you're not confident about moving about at other people's gigs or at clubs, you're never going to be confident at moving about onstage. Practice is the key.

  5.
Is it me, or do bassists on your side of the pond need a good bass history lesson....
I think he was siding with the Mat.
  6. http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/rickenbacker-bass-guitar/97321066 No pictures or much in the way of a description, but at £800 it's probably worth a look if you fancy a fretless Rick. Unless they start with that 'I'm not in the country at the moment but my associate can post it' nonsense.
  7.
Withdrawn. And outdrawn
Withdrawn, but not pulled by ebay. I hope nobody took him up on his call for offers of around £200.
  8. NPD? I think that makes you Blue Pointy Pick Club member #1.
  9.
He is? Does he post much?
Not much. Anyone remember when the hitherto anonymous Steve Albini revealed he was the owner of Electrical Audio studios on a poker forum? I'd imagine fanboys are still posting on that thread now.
  10.
maybe i should just wet sand the neck until it reaches the clear coat
That was my thinking. The lacquer over the face of the headstock isn't very thick though, so go easy when the varnish shows signs of thinning out. If the decal is damaged replacements are available.

    First Bass

If it were me, I'd be looking seriously at the Lazer. It's a Matsumoku made bass from a time when they were at the top of their game. However if you scroll down to post #13 it looks like it might have sold. Which at least solves the dilemma for your budget.
  13.
big + 1 to this So many bands get caught up with the sound, technical ability, gear etc and forget that they are there to provide entertainment. 99% of punters don't care about your amp or strings or if you know every scale or some super duper chops. Its taken me about 20 years to realise this
+1 I still remember the guitarist of a band I was driving for snapping a string during a solo - then a second one went. Out of frustration the normally quite subdued guy thrashed the living cr*p out of the remaining strings until there was only one left. The place went absolutely bananas. The band were pretty damn good players but they never had that sort of response on any of their other dates. Neil Young did the same sort of thing on his last tour (only with the aid of string cutters). That went down pretty well as well. Sometimes the music can be fairly incidental to what else is going down onstage.
  14.
Dave, I think these copy and paste urls etc. are a bit dodgy, because on occasion I've done the same as you and only managed to get a link to the photo, and people needed to click on it to see the image, and then had access to my other public images on Flickr's slideshow. Not sure if it's each website's codes that clash, or what. Feel free to delete my image from your collection, of course!
Hah! Sorry, but you've just reminded me of Bananagate! A moderator of the NME forums posted up an innocuous picture on the NME forums, but had left other pictures of himself and his girlfriend accessible to the public, Along with the aforementioned banana. Much hilarity ensued,
  15. Plenty of thrusting young indie types go for quirky, off the wall band names like the ones you suggest. Which might not be so great if you're not the thrusting young indie type yourself. And I'm nicking Bats in Bikinis if you're not going to use it!
  16.
I wish Old Git was here to comment on this
I was just thinking the same thing. Even though I know we'd disagree.
  17. The Mexican factory didn't open until 1987.
  18. No. Though sometimes I wish I'd never heard of Camel.
  19.
I was under the impression that scientifically it makes no difference if a cab is front or rear ported with regard to placement; a ported cab acts like a ported cab no matter where the port is. Sound doesn't come out of the ports so front or back is immaterial... a cab should be correctly tuned no matter where the port is!
Don't quote me on this, but I think air comes from the port below the Fs. Although it doesn't generally matter where the port is, you shouldn't place the port too close to a wall.
  20. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ibanez-bass-guitar-/180820175659 An Ibby that I think has been up before. He's sensibly included his phone number on this one.
  21.
If you want something decent for no money that will stack up well against 2 guitar combos and a live drummer then you need to break away from combos. You can get one of the marshall 8x10's off the ebay for less than half your budget and the rest can get you anything that has at least 200w which would drive it enough to be louder than everything.
That's a really good suggestion! Though I've just taken a look on ebay and the really cheap ones aren't there at the moment. A long drive from Edinburgh as well.
  22. Personally I'd tell your friend not to worry too much about the warranty. The amps are less likely to suffer from a manufacturing fault in the first year (assuming a 1 year warranty) than they are from abuse - which won't be covered. I'd go for a clean, used Peavey or Trace set up. Both have excellent reliability reputations, can be picked up cheap as chips and the money saved can be used to get in the spare drivers to replace the ones that will be blown when numptys abuse the amps!
  23. Whoa - that was unexpected. I think everyone here knows how excited you were about the band so it's such a terrible shame band politics had to intervene. I think they're going to struggle to find someone as committed to the band as you were Clarky. Make the most of it to spend more time with your family but keep your eye out for fresh opportunities. Jam nights can be a great way of keeping your name out there without having to commit to anything that might not fit in with your family life. The problem with just waiting for something to turn up is that it doesn't always pan out. Chin up! Better things lie ahead.
  24. I don't think this has anything to do with either the amp's or speaker's impedance. It's a bit hard to know exactly what is meant by 'top end fart' (well.. it is when you're talking about speakers ) but I'm wondering if the Custom Sound is clipping. It apparently has a lower wattage than the Laney so by pushing it harder you might be hearing that as a high end distortion? Though I'm pushed to imagine a sub making any noises that could be described as top end. Are you sure it's not something rattling in the cab, or even a damaged cone?
  25.
Depends what sort of radar you have . They still get plenty name checks by people like The Mars Volta amongst others and I think they just completed a world tour a couple of years ago. But they stopped being a prog band in the late 70’s when Hackett left the band and they then jettisoned the long pieces, going off to the AOR/MOR territory that they sold gazillions of records with. So you have two Genesis’s really; the Peter Gabriel-era band that its ok to like at the moment, and then you have the stadium-filling Collins era that everyone likes to boo in pantomime villain stylee.
I just comes from browsing around Drowned in Sound really. There are plenty of Muse or Mars Volta fans there that have delved into the roots of prog but I've never noted any love for Genesis. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. I guess you and Dave are right about the Gabriel/Collins thing, but as a casual observation there didn't seem to be any love for the Gabriel era either.
