1.
Twin truss rods isn't a win, it is down to poor engineering.
Not really. It does allow for a small amount of correction should a twist develop, and allows dead spots to be moved or eradicated in a way that single truss rods can't. Not that these are problems that should really be occurring at the price point of a Rick anyway. Ricks do have QC issues, though probably not to the extent of many other high profile brands. The issues with the recent blue finish is a case in point, as is (or was - maybe they've finally sorted it out) the bridge/pickup alignment. There are a ridiculous amount of 4000 series basses I've seen with either strings not passing directly over the pole pieces or extra grooves in the saddles. Small thing perhaps, but these aren't cheap basses. I think the QC issue is usually mentioned because for JH and the faithful they don't appear to exist. Which can lead to a lot of disappointment when even minor issues emerge.
2. Like Lozz says, for maximum volume you need an efficient cab. In practical terms that means lots of speakers to shift more air. Which inevitably means something big, which rather defeats the main advantage of the GK - that it's small and light. If you want an efficient small cab take a look for a BFM omni or Jack.
3.
I know I'm in the minority here so I'll keep this short, but I applaud Rickenbacker for protecting their interests. I think there may be a few might agree, but sight the CEO's methods as bully boy tactics. Well, you know what, I bet he's sick to the back teeth of asking nicely and there comes a point when pretty please don't work anymore. If you want to manufacture a bass in a far eastern place (other points of the compass available on request) then go design your own original shape and see how many you sell!
I've got to agree with you there. Despite it's high profile RIC is a small, essentially family business, not a huge corporation like FMIC for instance. However what raises people hackles is the way JH pursues private sellers of instruments that existed well before RIC even applied for a trademark. It isn't a case of "how many you sell" if you're just trying to move on a personally owned instrument. Despite what JH and the Rickenwaffen would have us believe, it's not illegal to sell personal property in this way in the UK. So to make baseless threats to sellers certainly does smack of bully boy tactics. I really can't see that the sale of a 35 year old copy, for a fraction of the price of even a used Rick, really threatens the sale of RIC's new instruments.
4. My memory must be totally shot - I was going from this thread on TB, so I've got things totally about face. It's the newer ones that have mixed case. Allegedly. A quick google revealed this thread, which shows a newer one with upper case lettering. In both the examples of the newer instruments the fonts are bolder than the older ones, so maybe that's an indication of age. Or maybe not. It'd be handy if other owners of newer MIJ's could confirm if theirs have bold fonts. So although it's not 100%, I'd still go with yours being a newer one. The 'date' in the pocket seems a little too coincidental, especially as it coincides with the manufacture of T+0 serials. Sorry about any confusion I might have caused!
5. It's a decent sized venue Clarky, witha good stage and easy load in. Down side is that it can be a bit echoey (is that a word?) and boomy. You'll just have to pack the place out! I'll see if I can make the gig Mike. I'll just have to check my finances as it's going to be an expensive month for me.
6. They're reusing MADE IN JAPAN (note the caps) for recent Japanese Fenders, hence the confusion - most serial dating websites haven't caught up with the changes. So for your serial to make sense it should be treated as a CIJ serial - hence a 2008 date. All the recent T serial numbers seem to be followed by a 0.
7.
Regarding the lone head, I emailed G4M asking if the stats of '500w @8 ohms' was correct, and they mailed me back that it was. Am I alone in thinking that something is amiss?
I think if you asked them what the figure for 4 ohms is they'll be stumped. I'll bet whoever emailed back was reading from their own website, as it doesn't stack up.
8.
Nah, wasn't far away so hadn't paid on the offchance he'd come through Bristol. Got his email so gonna go not via ebay.
Result. Sure you won't have a problem shifting it, even if you have to go for a stealth listing.
9.
Small claims court job against ebay?
I certainly would if it all went tits up. Have you got the bass yet Oli?
10. I'll be happy to chip in for any legal opinion, should it be needed. As has been said however, it's a case of who blinks first and it can be very, very expensive to discover who that will be. From what I remember of reading a trademark lawyers website (perhaps 8 years ago) the US and UK treat the definition of trade differently, and unless things have changed in the intervening years the private sale of personal goods doesn't fall within trademark law in the UK. It does in the US, so JH may well believe he is right. However RIC is likely to have deeper pockets than us and the merest hint of of this going to court could quite easily empty our collective pockets. In other words, in true Maxwell bully-boy style, he may well be able afford to just to bluff it out with the confidence he'll drain our coffers first. As for why JH doesn't license mass produced Far Eastern copies, it's because he doesn't have the inclination. He believes in the quality of his instruments, they're tied up with his personal history and he grew up knowing his family were closely involved with an iconic design. Why would he want to cheapen the family brand?
11.
Interesting. Do you have any idea if they have these trademarks also in the rest of Europe?
From the attachment it seems like it's an EU wide thing. AFAIK, trade for the purposes of trademark law doesn't include private sales. A very brief google seems to indicate that even shops aren't liable - only those who produce, package or import the goods.
12. Until fairly recently RIC didn't have a trademark in the design in the UK - they've now registered the headstock. I don't think there's any need to lock the thread. Every other brand is fair game for 'bashing', so I don't so why RIC should be any different. Edit: Just seen that the first attachment confirms their trademark - you need to change the extension to .pdf to open it.
13. Irritating perhaps, but it's bums on seats that count.* On the plus side, unless their friends actually like the band, they're unlikely to continue turning up for gigs. Edit: *For the promoter anyway.
14.
Turns out they can pull rickenfaker auctions even if you've already won them, and suggest you contact the seller if you've already paid, which you can't because the listing is gone and there is no contact button any more. Have to go via paypal email, which bypasses all the ebay 'security'.
Did you pull the trigger on one then? Pulling an auction is one thing, but withdrawing all support and protection once the auction is over is another thing altogether.
15. The Tour 410 is 15lbs lighter than the ABM if that's your only concern.
16. The Harley Benton combos are back in stock if anyone's interested. http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_ba5110c.htm
17. I just looked at the Shuttlemax specs and seen that it does indeed have two preamp channels as well as dual power amps, though I'd imagine the preamp channels are summed before being sent to the power amps - if it didn't you'd have to be using both preamp channels at all times to get full power. Simply plug each cab into it's own power amp - 750w, job done.
18. There used to be loads of threads about trolleys, but I guess that all these lightweight cabs have put paid to that. I have a Lidl one (Aldi did the same thing as well), and they used to be flagged up quite often when they came on sale. Load weight of 100Kg. Some people used to recommend a fishing trolley that Argos do as well. Personally I like something that has a load capacity that's at least twice the weight you need to carry and doesn't have folding wheels. If you're going to be taking it over rough surfaces or bumping up and down kerbs it can take a toll on the trolley. Edit: This one looks very similar to the Lidl /Aldi ones.
19. If you like the sound you're getting with your 1x15, get another identical one.
20. Assuming each power amp has one output, you've got two options. A) use one of the power amps and daisy chain the cabs, giving you a 4 ohm load and 600w, or use both power amps, each driving an 8 ohm load and giving you 750w. I'd go for the latter, not for the extra 150w but so the amp isn't being worked as hard.
21.
I've looked at this for London use. Weighed against car ownership (£1000 pa for me before fuel and before it goes wrong... again) it does seem to make some sense... but only for intensive trips. With gigs, there’s a three-to-five hour hole in the middle where the car just sits there with the meter running, as it were. If anyone's done proper sums on car share deals, I'd be interested to hear their conclusions...
I did look into car clubs but it didn't take long to work out that using Addison Lee was far cheaper. You've just got to find someone in the band that doesn't mind storing the bands gear in one place. Though I suppose if you all live close enough picking up gear from everyone's homes could be feasible.
22. I've got a Harley Benton BA500 and the label on the back says 120w power consumption. I'm not sure how that can be right, but there you have it.
23.
I've bought one of these myself recently but it turned out to be a bit of a wreck so I lost the motivation to get it finished in any hurry. I'd be interested in buying, as between the 2 basses I'm sure I could assemble one good one If I recall from when I was looking, they can fetch around £450 in mint condition, but yours looks a long way from that I'm afraid. Let me know when you have an idea of what you want for it.
£450! Was that from a shop, as it seems waaaaay over the odds to me. I bought a tidy example for £130 a few years ago, and if I remember correctly Tayste sold an even nicer one on here for the same kind of money. They were made by Matsumoku in the early seventies, but that's all I know about them.
24. I did a timeline a while back, aimed pretty much at people looking at 70's Precisions on ebay. It still needs more pictures added in, but I'd kind of forgotten about it.
25. I've often met up in person when I've bought anything here, so payment isn't a problem. On the occasions when I've bought without meeting up I think I've just used paypal. A word of caution with paypal though - don't send the money a 'gift'. Several people here got sting by a scammer who was answering posts in the Items Wanted forum - those who had sent their money as a gift fell outside of paypal's protection scheme. If you want some extra insurance, use a credit card to fund your paypal transaction.
