So, Beedster 'bought' this and then 2 weeks later the seller relists and again it 'sells' to someone based on Hayling Island, this time for £350. No feedback is left by either party in any of these transactions. Now it's turned up in a guitar shop local to the original seller. The same sort of less than great photos, the same less than forthcoming description and apparently the same ignoring of questions. It would seem obvious that the buyers have backed out of the deal, probably because the thing is hooky, and that the seller is totally aware of this. I might suspect that this is a commission sale by the shop, but I'm sure they're probably aware all is not well with this bass. And is close on £3000 not over he top even for a genuine CS without the case and paperwork?

+1 to getting in touch with MCPS. I'd imagine this is going to be classed as a derivative work, but the fact that you're going to change substantially change both songs probably means you'd need to contact the publishers for permission. You'd then have to go back to MPCS for the permission to press them up (pressing plants need the paperwork before they can press anything up.)
nah sorry , wasn't very clear. What I mean is it looks like a standard Thunderbird with the bottom half mirrored on top so it's got two rounded horns at the neck end
The body looks like a non-reverse thunderbird to me, but it's got a Fender style neck so I'd guess it's a custom job.

My gut instincts were that JLP is right on this one, and that seems to be the case
4.4 Can I claim RGR [Reimported Goods Relief] on goods reimported by post? Yes. The same conditions for relief apply but the procedures are slightly different. For goods arriving by post, ask your sender, if possible, to mark the package: ‘RETURNED GOODS’ A customs declaration (CN22 or CN23) must be attached to the package or travel with it. The declaration must include a complete and accurate description of the goods, their quantity and value. If you are registered for VAT, make sure your VAT number is quoted on the declaration. Depending on the value of the goods, we may send you Form C88 and/or simplified forms to complete and return. If you previously exported the goods, and have a certificate of posting or other export evidence (paragraph 3.1), send that with the completed forms too. If satisfied the goods qualify for relief, we will then release them for delivery free of duty and VAT if appropriate. If the package is not clearly marked it may not be delivered until you have paid the duty and VAT. You should pay these charges and then write to Revenue and Customs at the postal depot where the goods arrived. Say what happened and enclose the document showing the charges together with any evidence of previous export. If we are satisfied the goods qualify for relief, we will repay the duty and VAT if appropriate. We provide full details about our postal procedures in Notice 143 A guide for international post users.
http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalW...tyType=document

I've been watching this thread with interest, but haven't really felt the need to contribute as the Bass Cellar lost my custom a long, long time ago. I was expecting a simple plug for their services from BC, and that's exactly we got. I really doubt they care whether a relatively small number of people voice their opinion of them on a forum - after all, despite many other threads along these lines the OP still went in there. And that's the point - Denmark St gets a lot of footfall from all over the world, and clearly enough to keep them in business. They might be doing better with good customer service, but it would appear they don't need to so I don't imagine things are going to change in the near future. I can see a certain logic as to why they would be wary of allowing everyone to pick up and play the basses. Large numbers of people have no intention of buying or just want to try before buying online, the possibility of damage and even the amount of thieving crackheads in the area. But that's really no excuse for sizing up people the moment they walk in the door and deciding whether they're worthy of their attention. Suffice to say that 200,000 (or whatever) customers through the doors is not the same as 200,000 satisfied customers. I overlooked the appalling service on many occasions, but being asked "what are you doing here" on entering the shop was the final straw. It'll be a cold day in hell before I ever go back.

The bridge cover looks ok to me. I've got the guitar version and it's the same.

Yeah, they've been appearing on websites for months but they're not available yet. Dolphin has the dates as 29/8/08 for the 350 and a fortnight later for the 1000.
sorry, but just no, not in this situation they chose to live in a house on the A1, they should not have made that decision if they don't like noise! also, chances are just as likely that they moved in whilst the venue was already there, so they should accept noise every weekend! i used to live behind a hotel that did weddings and bands, and there was no such sound restriction, and i don't think there should be. if your sayin that the venue are selfish for not worrying about the sound level, thats bollox, your calling the bride and groom 'selfish' for wanting a band to play at their wedding, the venue just take the fee for hiring the room or whatever, they dont choose the bloody band. and if your honestly suggesting that makes the bride and groom selfish for wanting to make their day special, and not the neighbours for wanting to enjoy coronation street, then we agree to disagree well done for putting up with those conditions mate
I've got to disagree with that one Kev. Although we don't know the full circumstances surrounding this gig (whether the neighbours were just moany old gits or the venue had been seriously taking liberties with volume in the past), it is totally down to the venue to ensure it is fit for the purpose it was booked for. I'm sure that the bride and groom asked whether it was OK for a band to play and booked it for that reason. It is the responsibility of the venue to make sure that they had a good reception - including a band that can play at something like a reasonable volume. It sounds to me like the place was more interested in the booking fee than ensuring a good venue for a reception.

I didn't even know you were supporting - she didn't mention the headliners, so I guess it was you that impressed the most. I'll try to make your next gig.
Are there valves that you think sound cheap and nasty, or ones that you just don’t like or wouldn’t use? – again, I’m talking more specifically about the ECC83/12AX7 pre valves.
This thread used to be a sticky and is very useful for pre-amp valves. Brycie and Oxblood were a wealth of information on all things valve, but sadly they're not about anymore. Though DHA is still about

I think Jon (Bassassin) has tried one of these and was decidedly unimpressed. You'll probably find his thoughts on them in the Rickenfaker sticky in the Ebay Links forum.

That's an interesting bass - I wonder how it sounds with a mahogany body. Mr. Digits picked it up for £250 it would seem http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=180248143104 I notice how the original seller says it has a high action, whereas the new listing just notes the bridge screws are solid but the action is fine for him. Seeing as he's already done some work on the bass (new logo and filled a hole, at least), I don't think those screws are going to shift anytime soon.

Scam. Sticking the email into google reveals two hits - both from ebay, including one seller based in the states. He's obviously hacking into accounts.
-
Even if it didn't have those issues £2000 is waaaay over the top for a 74 Jazz in that kind of condition.
-
That's a surprise - I was listening to your myspace earlier! My girlfriend's daughter phoned up this morning and said you were really good last night so I checked out your page. Some very good bass playing there. Sounds like it was quite a successful first gig.
As well as the classic guitars and basses of the 60s Vox also produced some rather nondescript instruments in the late 70s early 80s. The teardrop bass has just been re-released
Nondescript certainly but also made by Matsumoku, who weren't in the habit of knocking out duff guitars.

No experience of that particular combo, but I bought a DP300 head in 1989. It's not too shabby as it goes, and sound particularly good with the DPC up full and the bass boosted. I had absolutely no idea of what that control did until I found an ebay auction where someone had handily stuck up photos of the manual. It's a bit blurry but readable. Enjoy! They've been advertised on various sites for months but I noticed Dolphin has them slated for delivery at the end of August.

The Jet Star is a short scale isn't it? If you're tuning to G I'm not really suprised you've got fret rattle as the strings are going to be awfully loose. Given that you're not really happy with the sound and, as Kev points out, that it'll probably need the nut recutting you might be better off biting the bullet and getting another bass. You'll save long term just on the extra cost of the heavy guage strings.

Why are warning bells ringing...?
I've seen quite a few late-70s musicmasters selling for £250-£400. Few seem to go much over that. Try : Musicmaster Bass Andy
This sold on ebay not so long ago, and I vaguely remember there being some kind of issue with it - a non-vintage body or something. Or maybe I'm just imagining that. Anyone else remember the auction? Edit: Maybe it was just my imagination - there was a thread about the original sale http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=musicmaster -
You can try Jon Free at Black Guitars - http://www.blackguitars.com/ Based in Stoke Newington and very reasonably priced. Tell him Roger sent you!

I'm not sure I can put you right or argue with you. That makes sense to me, though I can't help but wonder why you might want to go to the expense of buying a 5 string set just to discard the G?

Good call. And welcome to the forum.

I'd tend to suspect that the pots are worn, if only because you're getting more volume by turning down slightly. If there's access at the back of the pot you could try switch cleaner, but you'd probably be better off replacing the pots. Another thing to check and clean is the jack socket. I've never known distortion to be an issue with a dirty jack, but I had a sudden loss of bottom end on one bass which turned out to be down to an imperceptably thin layer of lacquer like substance.
