1. Just a thought, but the guy has zero feedback and appears to know absolutely nothing about what he actually owns. Possible scammer? I know he says pickup only, but he also says postage is possible - it wouldn't be the first time that a scammer has said pickup is possible and then turned round after the sale to say that it can only be posted. Like if your wife had just had twins maybe? Anyway, as always buyer beware.
  2. The link's not working for me - it seems it need a hyphen after the .com for some strange reason. http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/d...or-arsenal.com-
  3.
I have one of each, the only difference being one truss rod in my 4001 and two in my 4003. No problems with neck on my 4001, its straight as a die, although there are some horror stories (the neck was not designed for higher tension roundwounds). The sound should be near-identical for any Rick 4001 (post mid-70s) or 4003 as the pickups have not changed since they stopped using "toaster" and "horse shoe" pickups in the early 1970s. In some years, necks were a bit wider (my 4003 MG/BT has a slightly narrower and less chunky neck than my 4001) but essentially, bar the truss rod and some minor cosmetic differences (dark wood strip running through body in 4001s), they are identical to my mind.
4001's always had twin truss rods as well. If you've got one with a single TR it might be worth taking a closer look at it, because that's not normal for a Rick. When the 4003's were introduced they beefed up the neck a bit, particularly the volute at the top, and improved the TR design. Having said that the neck on my 83 4003 felt identical to the one on my 81 4001. The 4003s initially had the TR adjustment at the body end before returning to headstock adjustment.
  4. And you didn't offer to take it off his hands for £100?
  5.
So there are. The plate would be drilled for an ashtray too, wouldn't it? J.
Yeah, the plates were drilled for pick up covers but strangely the bodies weren't. Neither the SQs nor JVs actually came with bridge or pickup covers. I'd guess that Fuji Gen were using scratchplates from some of their more accurate copies. That's more your territory though Jon.
  6.
I had great service from Bass Centre in London a few months ago http://www.basscentre.com/default.asp I bought a bass from them. They let me try it out for as long a I wanted. Were really helpfull, friendly and offered good advise. They were in Liverpool Street area but have now moved.
Didn't the Bass Centre shut as a physical shop towards the end of last year? I thought they were just online now.
  7.
It'd be nice if the bass turned out to be a JV or SQ... J.
No such luck Jon - there are 4 screws in the top of the pickguard rather than the 3 of the JVs and SQs.
  8. By 1978 Fender were starting to put stickers with the serial number on it on the back of the scratchplate, or sometimes in the neck pocket. The pickups should also be stamped with a 4 or 6 character number, where the last and last two characters respectively are the year. Serial numbers should always be used in conjunction with any pot codes or stamps though. If everything is original (apart from the neck) the bass couldn't have been put together before the latest dates on the parts.
  9.
Hi there, I'm loooking for a reasonably cheap, easy to use distortion and overdrive pedal. Wondered if you guys could advise me as to what the best pedals out there are? Cheers
Blimey, the million dollar question! And of course the correct answer is... there is no correct answer. Distortion is an incredibly personal effect, and what sounds perfect to one person can be an unusable heap of junk to another. This is a subject that pops up weekly, and if you use the search box at the bottom of this forum and search for distortion you'll find stacks of threads with suggestions. A decent place to start is http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=10639 Reasonably priced stuff off the top of my head: Boss ODB-3, Ibanez Phat hed, Digitech Bad (or Badder) Monkey, Nobels Bass Overdrive, Danelectro fabtone, Dod 250...
  10. Sadly I think you're on to a non starter with a standard wooden shed. A standard wooden door hardly reduces volume at all and I'd imagine a shed would actually be worse. Allowing for the fact that you'll probably be looking a six surfaces to insulate it's more trouble than it's worth. The shed itself is effectively useless and you're relying entirely on the soundproofing you install, which would have to be really dense and preferably double skinned. I remember seeing something on the web about prefab booths, but they were far from cheap!
  11.
Robotic dogs, furnitue, equestrian paraphanalia, spare wheel from the van, a drill, selection of hats, acrobatic displays, playing tick off ground, hoping competitions, helium, womens sanitary products, womens clothes, we put the grumbleweeds to shame
Not so much a band, more a house clearance shop!
  12.
It is a white one pickup LBX or MBX not sure what the differences are.
Well according to your attachment the difference is the scale length, the LBX is 34" and the MBX is 32". Presumably the L and M at the start of the model numbers stand for Long and Medium.
  13.
cheers dude im in dorset how much do u want for that bass and can u post it:)
I don't think it's actually his! He just didn't want to flag up the shop selling it in case someone else jumped in first - just PM Ash and I'm sure the shop in question will be happy to post.
  14.
Any input on this yet guys? I'm not after hearing opinions on what people think would be the better choice. Just after hearing so many varied opinions would be good to hear the tone that you guys that love them can get out of one.
Checkout post #26 http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.p...8218&page=2
  15.
Sorry for the off topic, but, but whats with the string spacing!!!!!!!!!!!!..............never seen one that bad.
Hmmm. String spacing seems to be a bit of an issue for ricks. You'd have thought they might have sorted it out over the last 45 years.
  16.
It was about a month out of warranty-however I think I might have a crack at this-certainly won't hurt, and you never know what may result. Ta for the advice.
It doesn't matter that it's out of warranty. Under the sale of goods act it needs to be 'fit for purpose'. I don't think that anyone would consider a years light use of a pro quality bass (with matching price tag) fit for purpose. Except maybe Fender. I think the dealer you bought from should be your first port of call.
  17.
Oh yes. http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/5822/sept3rdtommyal5.jpg A whole quid off.
Whoopee! At least it'll go towards your head count.
  18.
10.20pm At Tommy Flynns, which is halfway between Camden Town and Mornington Crescent tubes. The crazy promoters want us to headline our first gig! I did a few gigs for them with my old band, and I think they're hoping for more of the same.
Jolly good! Have you got a flyer for the gig?
  19.
www.myspace.com/songsfromtheshows The design isn't done yet, and the mp3s are just recorded with an Edirol thing at rehearsal, but you'll get the general idea. First gig tomorrow. How often do you get to see 2 BCers in one band?
Very nice. I think I'll try to get up to Camden tomorrow - any idea of what time you're on?
  20. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but 50W rms is 50W rms. Valve amps may sound louder for a given wattage, but if the T&B is accurately rated at 50W that is what the cab will be seeing. A 200 watt cab should be more than enough to cope. If you've not had the opportunity to check the amp with another cab, I'd be inclined to do so. I suspect it's an issue with the amp rather than the cabs ability to handle the wattage. Edit: I'm sure I've read that others here have bought 50W selmers, but I don't recall any complaints about this kind of distortion.

How do I get this tone

You might be interested in some clips put up comparing the VT to a 1969 Ampeg stack. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=462767
  22.
point is, you need to try them both, and make your own conclusions
Amen.
You need to come and see my new band, then ;-)
Are you gigging yet? I remember your ads on here and at DiS and it sounded like something I'd be interested in (as a punter). It'd be good to see the band some time. Myspace?
  23.
Oh and in other news... had a message from the venue last night wanting to rebook and offering us headline...
Way Hey! Congratulations Sarah - that's a double finger to your old guitarist!
  24.
Thing is... we made mistakes all over the place.. but these were overshadowed by the rest of the night being so fab... but the other guitarist would've taken those mistakes REALLY personally... so in a way it worked out for the best.. My heart nearly escaped through my mouth when we started though... Have never been so scared/excited in my whole life! And for ages before I went into complete hype mode! lol
You did exactly the right thing Sarah - ignore the mistakes, keep playing regardless and have a great time. And I bet everyone watching enjoyed the whole thing as well.
  25. Congratulations Sarah - so glad you enjoyed it. It's a total buzz isn't it? And a finger to the guitarist who didn't have the bottle for it!
