1.
Doesn't look like Fender do that Squier in a lefty, nor a jazz bass in that colour, tis just the '60's vibe Precision'. Best bet is Custom Shop (as expensive as a late 60's Jazz, around £2000), or a custom build from a Luthier such as Sei or Shuker in the UK. Si
The guitarist in my band is a lefty, and he assures me that Squier don't do left handed instruments. In fact, thinking about it, I'm not sure they've ever done lefties - though I stand to be corrected. On the whole left hand players are pretty badly catered for.
  2. Wow - €3500. That's over £2700. I know the pound isn't doing well against the euro, but that an awful lot of cash for a refinished '75 Jazz. I don't know where you're based Leeroy, but on UK ebay I might expect this to go for about £1500. Edit: Yeah, what Sibob said!
  3.
But you've just kinda made the point yourself! We've been through recessions before and those guitars still gained value! As and when the 50's and 60's stuff becomes priced out of the market (only available to rich collectors etc), the early 70's gear, pre '74, will start making big jumps in prices!! Si
Or the point could be that in 1951 no one could have guessed that guitar based music could have become so established 50 years later. I'm not even going to try to guess how people are going to be making music in 20 years time.
  4.
I'd agree with most of what you say Si but I'd add the caveat that there is nothing to say that the market for vintage instruments won't suddenly collapse. Buying a vintage instrument (or keeping one till it is vintage) is fine if you enjoy it (playing or looking at) but I'd personally not bank on an instrument or instruments paying for my pension. Just my opinion but I'm a bit old school in that respect.
+1 It's worth bearing in mind that a lot of people were buying classic cars as investments in the late 80's, and the market utterly collapsed with the early nineties recession. Anything is only worth as much as someone is prepared to pay for it.

  6. I don't suppose anyone knows what is happening, electrically speaking, when you get a volume drop like this. Obviously if the pickups are out of phase you'd expect a volume drop, but I'd expect the volume to at least stay constant (or get louder) with two pickups switched in.
  7. I just dug out the review. Medium/heavy ash body (10lbs on reviewed model), 'genuinely hand finished' (whatever that means exactly). They also noticed a mid bias as the volume climbed, which they ascribe to the pick up, and that the pickup was marginally off centre.
  8. I think you've answered your own question - it's still cheap, especially for a decent looking Fender clone. As it happens I remember this getting very well reviewed when it came out. Maybe other people remember as well.
  9.
Years ago the (now late) bloke in the Bass Cellar told me when I enquired about availablity of the MIJ Fender Duck Bass, that Duck wasn't a very good player and Lewis Steinberg played on all the hits I didn't take much notice of him though as Duck was and (indeed still is) a well respected and sucessful recording artist with impeccible taste who has been inducted into the Rock n Roll hall of fame and Mr Baldy was a cloth-eared miserable little cnut in a shtty bass shop.
Classic!
  10. It's not that unusual to see expensive gear listed at a 99p start - people generally know it's worth and will bid accordingly. I think the idea is to get people caught up in a bit of 'bidding fever'. Besides, if it's nowhere near what he wants for it he can still pull the auction with 12 hours to go.
  11.
Nearly bought one the other week on a whim
Why does that not surprise me!
  12.
Anyone ever bought anything from Beatbacker in Germany? They've got some interesting looking instruments. Do those strings look a bit weird?
I don't know about the strings, but that pickup looks odd - 6 sets of pole pieces, and much narrower than the strings. A guitar pickup maybe?
  13. A couple of Mats http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vox-White-Shadow-bas...id=p3286.c0.m14 Currently at £30, but it's got a reserve. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WESTONE-SPECTRUM-ST-...id=p3286.c0.m14 £140, which I reckon is top wack for a Spectrum, but it's in pretty good nick And a bit of an oddity, which I'm not entirely convinced is either 70's or Japanese. Effect pedal samples

I'm far from convinced of the usefulness of soundclips. There are clips of a distortion pedal shootout on the Bass Player website, and the Nobels Bass Overdrive sounds awful (as noted in the review). But it remains my favourite overdrive pedal. Go figure.
  16. Great news! Not that I'm thinking of purchasing right now, but you never know when GAS will strike. Now, famous West London retail outlet - must be Harrods!
  17. £600? I would have thought the cost of materials and hardware might stretch to £300 (If you want the same spec) - that doesn't leave much for the time and overheads involved. There was a guy with limited experience who was advertising on gumtree (london) for a while - getting a student to do something might be your only option.
  18.
Quick question to anyone in general ....What happened to Bass Collection ? when i was origionally playing they were everywhere, now i dont see any on racks in shops anymore. Or did i dream them
Nope, it wasn't a dream. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=697 They were good basses, but I think the fashion for small bodied basses died out and they suffered as a result.
  19.
Cheers peeps i'll take this on board. I used to play years ago but had to sell up through getting into cash problems. At the time i had a Peavy 200watt Combo, A special combo that no matter how hard your tried & how many settings you descovered still managed to sound like a goose farting behind a bush. And felt like it was made out of 2ton of pig iron.
The Peavey Special was a guitar amp IIRC, which would explain why it sounded so rough. Though their bass gear still weighs a ton. Good luck with picking up a nice acoustic.
  20.
You'll find lots about basses in the forum - gear - with a bass guitars sub-forum and lots about amps etc in the amps and cabs sub-forum. Loads of posts from people asking the same sort of questions, and scads of useful info. Enjoy.
+1 Like OldGit says, you really have to narrow things down a bit. For me, if I could only have one of each of the things you mention and practicalities weren't a problem, it'd be Precision Bass SVT stack Blue Tube rack mount (I don't do acoustic ) Now watch everyone shoot my choices down in flames.
  21.
Pfffft... "I've had too many timewasters and am going to relist it".. "the price is as you see and it's no reserve... pay the money and it's yours" Good luck to him then. I'll keep looking.
He doesn't work for the bass cellar does he?
  22.
the bridge is covered by a pickup cover!! how can you comment on the bridge if you cant see it!
You get to see some of it in the picture of the pots. Bit hard to tell from that picture, but it may have the long G string intonation screw that Fender used from '70/'73. It still looks good to me.
  23. Pot, neck and pickup codes date to '74 as well. Though the blond finish was only introduced as a standard colour in 1975, so together with the serial number it's probably fair to say the assembly date was '75. Looks pukka enough though.
  24. Welcome to the boards! I've got to admit I'd be inclined to leave the Westone alone, but that's because I have a soft spot for Matsumoku built basses. Have you thought about a Warmouth neck? As for the pickups, Bart have got their wiring instructions here http://www.bartolini.net/instructions/pick...ckups4_cond.pdf
  25.
Hmmm...
My thoughts exactly. So the "I am selling because of twins on the way" and all the guff about him paying £1000 and gigging it is all bullshit. We're dealing with a known liar. I'd avoid like the plague - certainly wouldn't pay before seeing it in the flesh, preferably with a burly mate in tow!
