Lemmy doesn't use effects, its all about his Marshalls (SuperBass?). I read somewhere that he turns the bass control right down.
right. so i use an svt classic and on that you can select 4 or 2 ohms. so it'd be bad to use it with an 8ohm cab? i got a 4ohm 810 now so its not a big deal but i was hoping to use my old 8ohm 410 for practice. thinking about it i cant wait for turn up at a gig and see someone else with another 810 so i can flick it over to 2ohms!
I had pretty much the same question a while back. The short answer is that you shouldn't use a valve into a higher load than the amp is set to - you'll risk destroying the valves. Yeah they're lovely - I quite fancy the Classic 4 myself. There seem to be mixed reports of them though, so I think I'd like to try one before taking the plunge.

Fender Jazz on eBay - Need some opinion...
Musky replied to spychal's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
After paying £230 for this through gumtree and giving it a good run for its money once home. It was a good purchase. And to make me a tad more smug bidding on ebay has gone past what i just paid for it... The guy is going to be pretty annoyed when he logs on to take down the auction.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:B:DBS:GB:1123
Good deal! And now you can be pretty sure you could get more than you paid for it if you want to sell it on. I doubt the seller will be too upset though - ebay and paypal fees work out around 10% of the sale price... -
I've got one of these. Tracks very well and some great sounds (as you probably know). I haven't tried much else to compare it with though - a brief try of a SBY5 revealed that it was pretty rubbish compared to the G5, and my guitar micro synth, though nicely wibblesome, doesn't really hack it with bass. Some people seem to consider it the best bass synth out there though. I haven't had mine out of the box in years as there isn't a lot of call for it in a 60's style garage band.

Skunk stripe on the back of rosewood-board Fenders & Squiers?
Musky replied to SJA's topic in General Discussion
According to Duchossoir, Fender started to systematically fit the truss rods from the rear no matter what the fingerboard. Doesn't say why though - maybe to standardise as much of the production as possible? -
According to this page (you'll need to be logged in to a myspace account to see it) it's an SC II-B. Matsumoku made a lot of Epihones, and by the sound of the "three piece maple neck" this is one of them. No doubt Jon (Bassassin) will know a thing or two about these.

I was wondering why the pickup would have two wires for the output, but I think Steve's onto something with the coil tap thing. You've just got to figure out which is the tap. It's not the white and black wires you've got to swap, but the input and output wires.

When you run your cabs together with the Ashdown they will usually be wired in parallel - whether you run a lead from the amp to each cab or daisy chain the cabs. So you'll be getting the full 575w from the amp into a 4 ohm load. The power will be split equally between the cabs, so each will be getting a tad over 285w each. Obviously the 15 inch will be fine, but the 2x10 could be overloaded. You can still use it, but you'll have to use your ears for when it starts to complain and back off the volume. Otherwise you could be looking at a pricey repair job.

Yeah, I noticed that when it popped up in one of those google ads at the top of the page. They don't seem to be offering the 1x12 without the horn now though (unless I'm missing something).

bloc party/departure inf bass sound - EQ setting help
Musky replied to Mod_Machine's topic in General Discussion
I'm not entirely sure I know what you mean by snap and scratch, but I'm guessing you're refering to handling/string noise. In which case it's the compression that's causing it - ditto the hiss. There's a sticky on compression in the effects forum that gives a pretty good description of what's going on. Simple answer is turn it down (or off). -
sounds interesting - where can I find one (and what is it) ?
http://billfitzmaurice.com/ Bill designs a number of subs in different sizes. I don't know how they'd fair as a standalone cab, but perhaps not so different to the Acmes without the additional drivers. He pops up on these boards occasionally so maybe you could PM him. If you feel your woodwork is up to it!

bloc party/departure inf bass sound - EQ setting help
Musky replied to Mod_Machine's topic in General Discussion
To my ears the guy out of the Departure has a far more middly sound than Bloc Party, so you're more likely to get that kind of sound with a frown eq. There's a good chart covering instrument frequency responses at http://www.independentrecording.net/irn/re...ain_display.htm It won't replace using your ears, but it's quite useful for figuring out how each slider is likely to affect your sound. -
You were using the markbass with the treble and mids fully off? Maybe you just need a sub - BFM Tuba 18?

As you might guess from my choice of cab, bass extention isn't a big worry for me. I was initially thinking an O10.5 as it had less roll off below 100hz and was good for size/weight. Having seen the graph for the 4x12 I realised that I don't necessarily need much below 100hz anyway, so was considering the OT12 despite it being a bit bigger and heavier. I'm guessing that the OT12 is a bit less mid focussed as it doesn't have the rising response at 1K.
Cream Pies are all out of stock now.
Thank god for that! I was getting waaaay too tempted for another pedal I don't really need.
Don't force it, just play around with ideas (and have a think about syncopation and beat structure if it would help). Good luck, it's not always easy but it can be fun
+1 to that. That have been some great bass lines that are little (if anything) more than root notes. I was listening to Club Foot by Kasabian the other day - it seemed to me that the signature riff in it was actually guitar, and the bass was actually playing nothing more than root notes, albeit with an interesting rhythm. It sits perfectly in the song.

I've used a slant faced Marshall cab for the last 25 years - other cabs have come and gone, but I've always hung on to this one. It uses ordinary guitar speakers and I've not had a problem with it (aside from the weight!). I was considering one of BFM's cabs and was wondering how the bottom end would compare to the 4x12 - I found this the other day. As you can see, they don't have a great bottom end but in practice they're very usable, depending on what you're looking for of course.

Seeing as how ebay make it difficult to alert bidders and do little if anything to stop blatent scams, it seems a reasonable enough thing to do. As long as ebay don't give you too much grief if he files a non paying bidder report...

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Musky replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=270239659653 I really like that, can i ask you what you think of that please Jon? Is it worth a pop at? i think i would be prepared to stretch to about £75-80 How serious is that body split? would it affect the sound? EDIT: It looks like the first fret is missing...
Judging by the way the forearm and rib contours are painted in I'd bet the body is plywood as well. -
If it's the one on ebay, the lack of obvious grain makes it look like it's a basswood model.
Aye the very one. and very crap we were too!
Still, nice to have been a part of a thread in rock's rich tapestry.

Mmm... GAS! Squier you say? Mmmm... AFFORDABLE GAS!
No that's in case anything goes wrong and my parents want to have a rampage with a person face-to-face instead of a Bangladeshi over the phone... Understandable. No I shan't take it back for any other reason! Why necessarily buy cash from a bass/guitar shop that takes credit? Is there a good reason? -H
I was thinking more of the bass on ebay rather than a shop. The problem with ebay is the scammers who'll take your cash for nothing or send you a pile of junk that's totally misdescribed. The former shouldn't be a problem as it's collection only and the guy should be happy with cash - it'll save him any paypal fees. If your neighbour can be persuaded to make the trip with you, you shouldn't have any problems with the later either. Anything wrong with the bass should make itself apparrent after a brief play of the thing. I'd stick my neck out and suggest the only thing that could possibly go wrong with a Lyte after 12 years is the sudden (and frankly unlikely) demise of the active electronics. Even with this scenario it would be easy enough to bypass the circuitry yourself and have a perfectly usable passive bass. Basses aren't rocket science - they're pretty simple really, and any problems that affect its functionality should be readily evident.

If you do go to Denmark Street do yourself a favour and avoid the Bass Cellar. It the best stocked shop for basses but they're remarkably rude, especially if they think your bear the slightest resemblance to their idea of a timewaster. And quite often even if they don't. As for the 'take it back' thing, who'd want to take it back? ^_^ Arrange to pay cash, and if it's not as described walk away. Maybe you could sweet-talk your neighbour into going along to check it over. If you wanted shot of the thing just resell on ebay offering postage - should make you a good £50 +.
