Another new Muff! I wonder how many other variations they can think of. The Worm has been about for a while now, but I don't remember anyone voicing any opinions on it with a bass. You might have just volunteered to stick up your thoughts in the review section.

Opinions on condition of this Fender...
Musky replied to warwickhunt's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Christ knows what is going on that. It's definitely has some paint brushed on the bottom, but I've never seen anything like that before. It's like the crazing you get when you use two types of incompatible paint. But even the glossy bit looks like it was painted in in a barn full of wood shavings. -
Wow. Big jump in the price of the Hipshots - you could get them for £42 off ebay last month. Now they're about £60.
-
Rick's have quite small tuner posts anyway, and have a half inch hole in the headstock - about the same as the 12mm one on your faker. If you're looking to get your 'faker a bit closer to the real thing it might be an idea to go for replacements for the rick parts, like the hipshot ones. You could go for the fender type ones, which due to their popularity tend to go cheaper, but IMHO sticking on that type won't really look anymore convincing that what you've got. The posts are far bigger and the shafts are much longer than the rick ones, so don't really look the part. If it's the enclosed tuners with a rectangular head you've got and are just worrying about their ability to hold their tune, there's nothing to lose sleep about - they do a good job in my experience. You can buy molded 'rick' TRC's on ioffer.com but you're much better off following Jon's handy guide here.

I suppose it would depend on the year and condition, but for a 70's version I think that's steep even for a shop. The kind of money Wayne is suggesting would be more in line with what most people would pay I think.

I shot this guy an email requesting a couple of pictures, including one of the truss rod (sic). This is his reply - "Yeah, bit manic this end, If I get chance to get one done I will, but can confirm it has two (dual) truss rods!" I can't help but wonder how 'manic' things are if he can't spare the 5/10 minutes it would take to remove the cover and upload the pictures, but if it is a copy at least it narrows things down to a Mat (I think! ). I'll let you know if he forwards any pictures.

Pretty BASS COMBOS (SLIGHTLY ODD TOPIC)
Musky replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in Amps and Cabs
Sounds like it could have been a reissue Fender Bassman to me, though they're more popular with guitarists than bass players. Aguilar do a few nice looking cabs in a number of retro finishes, though not any combos or matching heads. The Ampeg Rocket might be worth looking at if blue/silver appeals. -

Nah, that one's a snip. Check out this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRUNO-GUITAR-ROYAL-A...emZ370095078885 -
I'm totally confused now, but with the overwhelming weight of opinion here I'll take everyone at your word. I'm not going to be using my VA350 with any cabs that don't match the tap anyway.
-
I'm not aware of any 2 ohm cabs, and valve amps aren't bothered by lower loads than the tap rating, only higher loads. But in any event he asked about power, not impedance.
Are you sure about that Bill? I'm a very long way from being any kind of expert, but I thought it was commonly held to be the other way round.

I was about to say that these aren't something you see everyday, but as I've got one that isn't exactly true. FWIW I paid £675 for mine in 1996, so £700 a few years back doesn't sound unreasonable. Unless they saw both of us coming. Lovely looking example you've got there and they sound the dog's nads as well, so someone should snap this up.
If it was good enough for Leo Fender, its good enough for me.
True that. Fender used car paints, both acrylic and nitro cellulose, right up to the late 60's and topped them off with a nitro top coat. Then they swapped over to polyurethane.

That looks like one of those Aria A-200 burns-a-likes, or one with another brand on it like the 'Eclipse' that went up on Ebay earlier today. It has the scratch plate over the top horn missing. http://matsumoku.org/models/aria/bass/a-100_200.html -
I've no idea what speakers the Trace is using (Celestions presumably?) but I seem to remember that Eminence Beta 10s weigh about 2lb more than the Deltalites. So at a guess you'd be saving maybe 10lbs. Most of the weight comes from the wood in the cabs.
Jim Deacon = SX
And 21 frets = cheaper starter versions, not the ones people seem to rate. I don't think the 20 fret SX branded fender clones are available in this country.
-
Aren't the Jim Deacon basses with 20 frets supposed to be the same as SX? I haven't tried either brand, but the SX's seem well thought of both here and on talkbass. If cash is tight they could be worth a punt, especially since Jim Deacons are fairly readily available and you could actually try one without shelling out first. Edit: watch out for 21 fret SX's - they seem to be the only ones available in this country (new anyhow) and they aren't as well made apparently.
Which one is wunjos? is it the one with the sid vicious precision?
Wunjos is next door to Boogie (if that what it's still called), with the music book/sheet music place on the other side. Or two doors to the left of the Bass Cellar, to put it another way. They don't have a huge bass selection, but do get some nice oddities in there.

Someone once recommended one of these on here (or one of the earlier incarnations). Though looking at it I'm not 100% sure the platform is completely horizontal.

Cheers OG, an great article. Another I'd recommend is http://photo.net/concerts/mirarchi/concer_i - based on Jon Sievert's excellent book, which is well worth hunting down if you enjoy photographing gigs. Both were written before digital photography really took off, but are still very relevant (except perhaps for the info about films). For small gigs I'd agree with the comment about an f1.4/1.8 50mm lens - the lighting at your typical toilet circuit gig is usually pretty poor and it's usually easy enough to get near the front.

The Gallery in Camden. No rude staff and will price match if you ask.
-
It won't damage the amp, but it will burn out the valves quicker. Exactly how quickly will depend on the valves you're using, whether the biasing is set correctly and how hard the amp was designed to push the valves.
not sure, the body colour looks quite aged as well as the hardware, it could well be an older model, certainly worth inquiring about!
It's quite simple to age hardware and a little button polish will darken the finish. The tuners, tug bar holes and logo don't match up date-wise - though Fender are quite well known for their oddities - but the real killer is the silver/grey serial number. 70's versions never had that.
-
It looks like a 75 RI to me, despite the rust on some of the parts - the headstock markings are wrong for an original 70's model. Not sure exactly how much they go for (I don't pay much attention to Jazz basses), but I'd guess £320 isn't too far off the mark for a Jap model.

Ditto to what Jon and Sgt Pluck said. Though at least some of the earlier ones were definitely solid wood - I had a friend who cobbled together a bizarre tea chest type contraption using the remains of a Marlin and and old dustbin. -
