1. More than an outage, it was a bloomin' explosion . The electricity generator next door went bang in the middle of the night. No damage to Bass Gear, though the smell wasn't nice and the power is coming and going, plus the noise of the temporary generator (in pic) was a bit annoying. Didn't stop a very nice customer coming this morning and buying a Bag End and a Little Mark Tube though. Even made the BBC ... Harrogate restaurant substation explosion cuts power Le Bistrot Pierre Supplies were restored by Saturday morning Hundreds of properties were left without power for up to 10 hours after an explosion at an electrical substation in North Yorkshire. An electrical fault is thought to have caused the minor blast in Cheltenham Parade, in the centre of Harrogate, on Friday evening. The substation is in the basement of a three-storey building which houses Le Bistrot Pierre restaurant and offices. [And Bass Gear's showroom -Ed] CE Electric said 524 customers lost power after the incident at 1830 GMT. All supplies were restored by 0430 GMT on Saturday, the firm said. A restaurant spokesman said the building had to be evacuated and some property had been damaged by the fire. The restaurant reopened on Saturday afternoon.
2. It might prove to be another interesting thread to reverse the point ..."What gear did you buy for a packet that you then came to realise was poo"! Anyway, back to the OP ...I volunteer Hayman, Shergold and Gibson Rippers & Grabbers as living up to the thread's title.
3. Just got back to snowy Harrogate. Brill day. Well done Nik and all that sailed with you. & now ...Beer
4. Hello from the parky north. I'm actually setting off in a few minutes for the bash ...no I'm not that slow ...just need to do things on the way! The disappointing news is that Jon Shuker advises me to avoid coming to his workshop this morning. As some of you might be aware, it is in the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District, so not a place to go in the current conditions if it can be helped. So, no Shuker Satinline prototype this time However, I will be bringing a selection of tasty basses! Phil
5. What time does it wrap up please? Only I have to make an arrangement to meet someone nearby as soon as it finishes. Thanks, Phil
6.
Whoops I just posted (and deleted) a recommendation without reading you'd bought a bass, funnily enough I was suggesting a Yamaha 6 string as a hell of a good bass for the money EDIT: Just for the record I also suggested possibly a 2nd hand Modulus Quantum
Even more weird. I was going to suggest a used Modulus Quantum before I noticed you said it as well! However, there's some nice Yamaha's around too and I look forward to Chris's review.
7. Hi Bass Bashers. As you know, I'm bringing some of Bass Gear's stock to display on Saturday. I've just found out that I'm able to bring an important addition ...and I'm looking to those attending to help out on some important product development. As you can see on this thread I'm bringing the prototype Shuker Satinline. So your part in history is sought! Cheers, Phil
8. For what seems most of this year, Jon Shuker and I have been working on a production model bass that Bass Gear will exclusively market in 2011. It will be the first bass that Jon has agreed to make as a non-custom for a third party to sell. Early on, we christened it the Shuker Satinline and is J shaped but has interesting specs to differentiate it from other J basses. Most notably, it will be a luthier-made bass for the street price of a US Fender!!! We have been experimenting with different woods, pick-ups and all sorts. Many bodies have been made and finished, only to be rejected. It's the budget requirement and unique specs that have given him the challenge. I spoke to Jon today and he thinks he's finally got a prototype that can be allowed out of his wood shed. I am visiting Jon on Friday (26th Nov) and will pick up this prototype Satinline and will bring it along to the South East Bass Bash on the 27th. What I really am hoping for is that folk will try it out at the bash and give us some user feedback. Armed with such info, we can then make any adjustments deemed worthy and proceed to producing the first batch of Satinlines for selling. Sorry, no pics to post until I've got it in my mits...but once I'm back from Surrey I'll get some up. Thanks, Phil
9. I've been sitting on the fence about Mark bass ...until I heard Michael Manring play through two MB combos (at the same time) at our Zon clinic last month. None of which went through the P.A. and they filled a very large room (200 seater) with wonderous sounds. Any louder, and ear defenders would have been needed ..and they could have been turned up a lot more. I'm now coming off that fence!

Where do the non-attendees get the tickets from Nik? Anyone from Yorkshire that wins, I can bring your prize back to Harrogate with me. Phil
11. Brilliant bass. I was the first UK owner. It cost me a four figure sum. At this price it's a steal. Go for it!
12. All white then, here's Dora... She's my very own, built for me this year and not for sale!
13.
How about this......
Wow Mike. An intriguing design. How's it tuned? Any info you can share on this? Phil
14.
I realise this is going to sound like a bit of smart alec thing to say but I was actually chatting to him yesterday at BPL on the Fodera stand where he was trying out a new custom Monarch. it's made of different woods to any of his and has a narrower neck than a the most usual one specified by Monarch owners (based on a '64 Jazz profile). I asked him what he thought and he said it was just an amazing bass and he really liked it - so much so that it was going to cost him a lot of money because he was going to order one to a similar spec. No reason to say that if it wasn't true and the Fodera guys later confirmed he would be coming in soon to go over the details He wasn't able to take the one that was at the show as it was heading to the UK fiarly soon . . .
This seems on topic, so I hope you don't mind me sharing this here. I got this pic a few hours a go. Jason at Fodera took a pic of this very same bass being played by the very same Victor. And yes it's on its way to Blighty right now ...guess where!
15. Having just typed out twenty address labels to send the Zon free prize draw goodies to, I noticed one address was to a Wem Road. I used to lived near an aerodrome which is now a housing estate and the authorities named the new roads with names like Spitfire Way and Hurricane Drive. It got me thinking ...if Basschat folk could live on a (virtual) estate with bass related names for the roads, where would you like to live? PS I'm busy really!
16. Here is the post gig afterglow
17.
We should have made up some little "Basschat" name tags so we could spot each other
Actually there's an idea there. Whenever a similar event occurs in future, I'll reserve tables/seating just for Basschatters to commune. Just sorting out a blog posting about the gig now, including a review written by 17-year old Alex Bates + a few choice comments from this thread/emails received (anyone not wanting their words used, I'll happily remove them if I'm asked). Phil
18. It was just the most rewarding thing seeing so many people that went away happy, inspired and astounded. There were seven people there on the student F.O.C. list who, I hope, may have had a positive nudge to their musical futures. Thanks to all that came, and also to JonnyLad & Yorks5stringer for all their stage crew help. The guys should be arriving in Exeter right now, so anyone going to the Mansons show are very lucky indeed. I was able to tell Michael this morning some of the nice things said on this thread. He was touched. He inspired me as a warm positive man, apart from his musical talent. BTW Michael didn't have a any looping facility, it was a delay effect. If only I had some eBows to sell last night! At least most of those Zons on show are in our stock. I loved hearing Mrs Retroman's comment concerning Alembics! From what I could see of folk trying the displayed basses, the hit of the evening was the Sonus 4-string fretless which is a beautiful instrument
19. Folks, I've just had a brief message from Joe Zon ...he and Michael are in the country and will be in Harrogate tomorrow. He also says that there was a problem with Alex Bershadsky's journey to the UK and it means he won't be joining us. However, Michael will be pulling out the stops (or tuning pegs) ) to do an even better show.
20. Information update. There's a healthy number of tickets sold, surpassing my target in fact, but there's plenty of room for more. This is just to say that last minute online purchases are welcome (there's no physical ticket) as are cash buyers on the door. For online purchases at www.bassgear.co.uk Email me for the redemption code for the Basschat 50% off. Thanks, Phil
21. Ah well, I'll put this sweetie on the bay now.
22. Your every Tweet will be followed
23. Following a chat with Nik and the S.E. Bash Bash organisers, I'm pleased to say that I'm now coming with some of our hard-to-find basses to show at the bash. There'll be the (just arrived) £1k+ Zon Standards (which I'm personally blown away with) and maybe some Fodera NYCs. Some pre-owned basses too. I'm all up for the charity raffle too, so here's what Bass Gear will be donating to the pile of prizes More about the XXL Warp here See you there! Phil
