1. Apologies if you already know this, but BC does not appear to have put its bedside clock forward. And as soon as this was posted, it appears it has ..so please ignore this!!!!
2. And finally, the bassist that was cited the most as being their favourite bass player of the '70s is (drum roll) John Francis Anthony "Jaco" Pastorius III Some might have predicted that, but who would have predicted that the top four in this poll were all named John! So thanks to all that contributed. May the debate never end.
3. And the Basschat polster's second favourite bass player of the 70s is ...a tie! So squeezing on to the podium is the Great, but trampled underfoot, John Paul Jones , who shares the honours with the Late (for the 5.15) John Entwhistle YEAH!!!!!!
4. And standing on the podium of perfection in Third place, walking on the beaches with 10 votes is... JJ Burnell (applause)
5. And (said in Jonathan Woss voice) for the Bass players that got multiple votes but didn't make the podium, the joint winners of the Runners Up award are... Bernard Edwards 9 Bruce Foxton 9 Chris Squire 9 Geddy Lee 9 Phil Lynott 7 Andy Fraser 6 Dennis Dunaway 6 John Deacon Queen 6 Stanley Clarke 6 Chuck Rainey 5 Anthony Jackson 4 Aston Familyman Barrett 4 Larry Graham 4 Paul Simenon 4 Willie Weeks 4 James Jamerson 3 Martin Turner 3 Norman Watt-Roy 3 Peter Hook 3 Roger Waters 3 Alan Spenner 2 Barry Adamson 2 Bootsy Collins 2 Bruce Thomas 2 Colin Hodgkinson 2 Geezer Butler 2 Jerry Jemmott 2 Jim Lea 2 Louis Johnson 2 Neil Murray 2 Percy Jones 2 Roger Glover 2
6.
That would be a Washburn AB40 http://www.washburn.com/products/bassacoustic/ab40ab10.aspx Rodders
Watching James "Hutch" Hutchinson use one in the Bonnie Raitt band inspired to buy one ...well I got the AB10 actually. I love it, and well worth £200+
7. And for the Bass players that got only one Bass Chatter's vote, the joint winners of the Lonely Sods award are... Alphonso Johnson Boris Gardner Burke Shelley Byron Miller Chas Smash Chris Cross Cliff Williams Danny Thompson Dave Allen Dave Pegg Dee Murray Doug Rauch Duck Dunn Felix Krish Felix Papparlardi Flabba Holt George Murray Jim Fielder Jimmy Bain John Gustafson John Mackenzie John McCoy John reed Joseph "Lucky" Scott Kasim Sultan Kelly Groucutt Lee Sklar Leigh Gorman Lemmy Lequient "Duke" Jobe Marcus Miller Mark Egan Nate Phillips Nathan Watts Paul Gardiner Paul Jackson Paul McCartney Peter Cetera Richard Sinclair Rick Laird Robbie Shakespeare Ross Valory Russell Jackson Steve Currie Steve Swallow Steven Severin Stevie Wonder's left hand Sting Tiran Porter Tom Scholz Tony Levin Tony Reeves Trevor Bolder Wilbur Bascomb
8. The results of everyone's posts of their top Five Favourite Bass players of the 70's have been totted up. See original thread It was great to see a number of names that I personally was not aware of, so it has been nicely educational. Despite the methodology having had as many holes in it as Rab C Nesbitt's vest, there was a 'winner'. I have collated the results into the categories of :
Winner Runners Up Lonely Sods Most Eclectic Post
I shall now post the results by category and in reverse order ... The Most Eclectic Post award goes to Soulfinger who voted for five bass players that no one else cited. They were... - Nate Phillips (Pleasure) - Wilbur Bascomb (Jeff Beck, Hair soundtrack) - Byron Miller (Herbie Hancock, George Duke...) - Doug Rauch (Santana) - Ross Valory (1st edition of Journey)
9.
Hi there, The series IV have only just recently been announced, so you'll only just start seeing them filtering into stores in the uk if you're lucky. Swr are now loading the goliath range of cabs with eminance drivers, so that they have now increased the power output. I believe its by an extra 20-25watts per driver. So in the mark IV goliath seniors its increased the total output by an approx extra 150-200watts from what it previously was. The seniors are great cabs, i was toying with the idea of getting one of these a while ago, but i've had to settle for using upto 4 x goliath juniors on larger gigs or 2 on my standard gigs due to me only having a nissan micra. Hence why i'm selling my beloved 1x15 basic 2-way cab. Hope this helps, good luck with selling it.
Thanks for the info. Blimey. When I had a 1000 watt head on it I hardly used the volume, as even with the band at full blast I could go on and drown out a jumbo jet. And they want to make 'em LOUDER?
10. The link to the SWR product page is for a Series IV. I thought mine was a Series III, though not having it at home, I can't check yet. For my interest, and for any potential new owner of this ace cab, does anyone know what the difference is between the III & IV series?
11.
Bigger car, make the sacrifice I'm currently looking at estates to get an ampeg 8x10 about, back seats down and all that malarkey, its mahousive. I've heard good stuff about the SWR gear though, good luck with it.
I always thought that if I won the lottery jackpot, I'd pay for roadies. Believe it or not, a few years a go, one of the band was one of three to share a wednesday jackpot. Did he do what I'd have done? NO! Got himself a new ford and bought us all a curry. But he's a lovely guy and didn't want money to change him. Ah, Yorkshire men, Don't ever change!
12. I really don't want to part with this, but my band has recently replaced its decrepid, yet large, van for a not so large trailor. The trailor is used for other things, so the gear has to come out regularly, and at last night's gig, my cab got accidentally left behind. So, I'm going to take control and get a couple of car-freindly cabs to replace the SWR. To be fair, the SWR is easily moved about, with its tip-back wheels and grab handles, but it won't fit in my boot! It cost me £950 two years a go new, including the cover, and is in excellent condition. Here's the mouth-watering gen from the SWR website This is a feeler, as I don't have it with me right now to photograph, and also I've no idea what the street value is. If anyone has a high headroom amp and wants to shift a lot of air with oomph and crystal clear clarity, this is THE one!
13. I took it to an acoustic Open Mic session (but without the mic!). I played with two acoustic guitarists and congas. That's when I realised my Washburn AB10 was too quiet. Ironically, when with the band normally, I change basses mid set to play it, and I have to turn down, as it really is the loudest bass I've got!
14.
I've got a Washburn AB10 I'm selling for £200 .. BUY THIS! I've had one for a few years and it really is a great bass. NB. Most electro-acoustic bass guitars are really only useful when amplified, so don't buy one if you want to use it completey unplugged, as they are too quiet.
15. I'm an incurable Tele man too. Here's mine from http://www.jim-reed-guitars.com/eng/index.php He makes bass guitars too.
16. I want a white P with maple fretboard. Gimme gimme.
17.
I think i may look for a very cheap one to start on. Just for home use.
Necks on fretless, usually come with either dot marks on the top side, and a completely clear fret board, or have lines across the neck where the fret wire would be. Can I humbly suggest that you don't buy the former for your first fretless experiment? If you can, get to a shop that has both types in, so you can see the difference. Playing without good fret markers is, I reckon, where many of the 'tried and gave up' folk stumbled.
18. If this a Fender, then I am er ...not very observant. Is it JapCrap? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FENDER-PRECISION-BAS...1QQcmdZViewItem
19. It was never a scientific poll, but I'm going to post the results in a day or two. So if you still want to add your top five ...don't hang about!
20.
From the past, an underated player is Dave Pegg ...Fairport/Tull. He inspired me from the day I heard his wah bass solo on Sloth. I met him 30 years later and told him that me playing bass was all his fault. Saw him gigging recently and he's still inventive, with trade-mark harmonics and 5-string. From 'now' I'd go for Alonza Bevan of Kula Shaker. Creative, yet complimentary to the rest of the band.
Oh, and another not on most pundit's lists, but perfect for mentioning in these here despatches ...Brian Ritchie -bass and other odd objects for the legendary Violent Femmes

23.
I must admit I'm a recent convert too. Have owned imitations over the years and wasn't particularly struck by them and seemed to settle on my JV J for my covers band. Got a JV P about a year ago but didn't really gig it in anger until a couple of months ago and never looked back. Odd thing is, they don't sound all that exciting on their own but as someone else here said, they really come alive in a live band situation.
I'm definitely hankering for one again, now. Over the last 35 years, I've had natural, black, and sunburst P-basses, so this time I'd love a white one, preferably with a maple neck. Might put up a Wanted post soon!
24. There's been two big threads in the recent past on Aerodynes, so I suggest you use the Search facility, make a cuppa, and put aside an hour to read all postings! I absolutely love mine, and the P & J gives you a wide tonal range, so really useful for playing a variety of genre/covers. If you like 'em black, I know where you might get a used one.
25. What lovely eye candy. Will check the Lottery draw later.
