2. I was near the stage at Cropredy for the Blockeads set and IMHO Guy played really well. Yes there was the odd chord change fluffed and a fair bit of eye contact needed between his band mates to cue endings and such, but he was honestly very very good. I wish I could play as well as he can. He used Betsy, which fitted the bill nicely. It seems he borrowed Norm's Trace Elliot rig, though. I agree that the Blockheads were on at a debatable time slot.
3.
I have a session this weekend and one of the tracks would sound much better with a precision bass. Can anyone in a reasonable distance from Leeds lend me a precision? I'm also happy to pay expenses and buy you a pint. My seesion is 3/4/5th June. Realistically I could do the track I need a P for on the Saturday only if that helps. Thanks, Joe.
Would an Alleva Coppolo do Joe? One of our two ex demo KPB4s could do with some free-loan exercise.
4. Seeing things on Basschat often surprises me, but I think this is the very first time I can truthfully say that I've been STUNNED. (BTW Young People, that's the old spelling of Gobsmacked). An original '58 is my ultimate dream (that old Y.O.B. thang). Fantastic collection you have there. Where have you been all this time ...and can I get one of my sons to marry one of your daughters? Phil
5. Victor asked that we send this to folk who helped or took interest in his predicament: "Hello everyone, I'd like to personally thank U all for trying your best to help me out while I was in Norway - especially the two gentlemen who were ready to hop in the car and start driving right away. U all are amazing. Just so U know, my basses and luggage showed up at the hotel after the gig. I'm a happy man now. A big THANKS to all of U and to ALL at FODERA for all-ways having my back!!! Here's to the future. Peace, Victor L. Wooten" I still want to see some footage! Phil
6. From Fodera HQ...
We received literally HUNDREDS of responses from all over the world including two Fodera players that were very close to Oslo, but just too far away from the Gig to make it happen. So, at the end of the day he sourced a Marcus Miller Jazz Bass from someone local and did the gig on that. Now, a note on why he wanted a Fodera...yes Vic CAN play a two by four with two strings and play significantly better on it than many of us, however, on his solo gigs (especially when he is out JUST with JD Blair and its only the two of them), there are a number of his techniques that are very much intertwined with his having played a Fodera for over 20 years. Many of his riffs ARE above the 21st fret and a lot of the hammer-on techniques that he uses require incredibly low action and active pickups in order to achieve the desired result. Thanks again to so many of you for trying your best to help!! Jason
It would be good to get an audience member's report! Phil
7. Well here's two quick bits of info that I can pass on for the moment... 1) He ended up using a Marcus Miller Jazz tonight 2) No one gets a Fodera for free ...not even Victor Hopefully more to report on this tomorrow (which it already is in Norway) Phil
8. Right now he is looking at doing the gig on a pretty terrible P-Bass...he's not thrilled with the prospect! Could be interesting!
9. Victor's playing at http://www.hemnesjazz.no/ tonight with no Fodera, thanks to an airline c*ck up. If there are any Norwegians with a nice bass, preferably a Fodera, can they come to Mr Wooten's rescue, pronto? Let me know!
10.
Slightly different scenario, but we have over the years covered material by lesser known bands, most recently a couple of songs by a band called Street Legal, and I tend to search out their FB or MySpace page(s), add as friends/like and say BTW we are covering "xxxxx". General response has been "Cool...got any videos?"
I co-founded Street Legal in 1995 and the band's still going. Darn we'll just have to send out a cease & desist thang.
11. Sold! pending picking up and paying out! Thanks for all the PMs and posts. I didn't pay much for it originally, and the flats were 2nd hand from a Basschatter, so would prefer to move this on to a fellow BC'er in the same spirit of bargainess. (new word invented )
12. Just a thought, but I've often wondered about them Ashbory fretless thingy's. I could fit one of them in our new house! ...so a trade could be a possibility.
13. *NB This is one of my personal basses & is nowt to do with my store* Thought I'd never say goodbye to this but we are down-sizing and I'm being forced to make some hard choices about what can come with us. I love this bass, it's so easy to play with the narrow low profile neck. I bought it to have as my bass to have flatwounds on when an appropriate song popped up in the set (it's got some La Bellas on). It also has been a superb rehearsal bass for me. The band it was used in regularly has now come to an end and we are moving house, so I reluctantly want to find a new home for it. Cosmetically it's a bit road worn and there's a couple of non-original knobs now on it too! But it is a Korean built SR505 which, IMHO, are superior to later models from Indonesia etc. You won't want to buy this if you're bothered by wear and tear, though I have to emphasise that it all functions perfectly. I'd like £140 + a tenner for the Basschat tip jar. I'd rather it be collected in Harrogate, but next weekend I am down Surrey, Berks and Oxon for a visit so maybe able to drop it off. Cheers, Phil
14. Well Jazz's weren't invented when I jumped out. So, I'd have to settle for a '58 Precision.
15.
Unusually the one in the link is lined. I've only ever seen the unlined before. There's no lined option on the Takamine site.
They're certainly a rare beast, and this one may be the only lined one in existence. The previous owner had it lined by top luthier Chris Larkin. I've just got back from a few days break, but this beauty is in our Harrogate showroom and ripe for plucking any time from tomorrow onwards! Basschat discount available of course
16. I spotted it at Musikmesse and discussed the supply/price situation for the UK. I will hopefully have realistic confirmation of this before too long. I spoke with the European Product Manager on this model, who told me that the 'LTD' edition is to mark the 10th anniversary of the SLB. I have to say that my impression was that some serious thought had gone in to the design with respect to the detail, such as the bridge. Here are a few hasty snaps that I took of this rare beastie. Phil
17.
Phil! Come and try the Krampera stack out tomorrow - got an EBS demo board and a couple of vintage basses sorted. Also trying out a mystery brand tomorrow
Hold on ...I'm coming
18. Saw lots of interesting stuff today. Some is under wraps whilst deals are being tied up, but here's my latest blog that features pics of Michael Manring, some neat new amps and the obligatory Bootsy reference. Frankfurter Phil
19.
You wouldn't believe the amount of trouble he had with getting Lufthansa to get that bass into the hold too. He was upgraded to business class to meet the weight restrictions.
That would add a few verses to his song, me thinks. Anyone care to suggest some lines?
20.
What's up with his Fender? I told him not to put it in the hold!
Me too! I suggested (well in advance) that he borrowed one from a bass maker who is exhibiting. It got buggered in the hold as far as I know. It's playable, but only just!
21. Hi folks, I've just blogged Day One here in Frankfurt. What I really want to share with you is that it's actually worth visiting as a non-trade person, if not this Saturday then perhaps next year. Unlike some trade fairs, this one ends up opening to the public. It only took an hour and a half to fly to and I can honestly say it's worth it ...both for looking at gear AND seeing live performances. And I'm not the only Bass Chatter here ...Tomkent is working on the Kampera stand with a f**ked Fender, whilst mentally composing a new song provisionally entitled "Lufthansa breaks guitars". Pics and comments on the dudes seen playing today are here ...Divinity Roxx, Bootsy etc. Hope you don't mind the Heads Up! Frankfurter Phil
22. Only 10 years Keith? I thought the Watermelon men were Gladys Knight's original band before she squeezed 'em dry! [gets coat] PS. I shall raise a stein to you and the band from Frankfurt, as that's where I'll be instead of coming to see you, tomorrow. Hope it's a killer. Phil
23. Parcel2go limit insurance for musical instruments to £1000. It's well hidden in their small print, but it is true as I recently 'discussed' it with them. FWIW Int. Parcelforce have never let me down and they pick up from you. Last courier I used was to Germany about a week a go. I used DHL and they were picking up in minutes of booking, then delivered ahead of schedule. Not cheap, mind, but that bass was a highly valuable one, so I didn't mind the cost. Good luck with your shipping. PS. Sometimes it's cheaper to book a return trip on a car ferry and have a wee break at the same time!
24. Hi all, I just want to respond to a couple of points raised here. Spacing is 100mm between the centre of each pup to the next. The 5-string version is not out yet and maybe a couple of months away. One of the reasons for the price being lower than your typical hand built Shuker bass is the standardising of the finish and materials used. Not everyone will ever agree on the same colour of the body etc. Nor the fingerboard wood. But then there aren't enough being made to satisfy everyone! We quite like the idea of changing the finish colour each year, so 2011 is the year of the Amber Tiger There may come a time when more variety is offered but until then we have what we have. It's been a pleasure to bring a new option to bass guitarists, albeit in limited numbers to a lucky few. Thanks, Phil
25. I know, it's not a bass and nor is it mine. I've played in bands with Mick for 16 years. He's asked me if I can help him. So, here's what he asked and if you PM me I'll put you in direct contact with him. He lives in Leeds. As the topic description says, it's nowt to do with me or my business and I'll be lucky to get a pint out of him for my troubles!.
Hi Phil, Here are some pictures of my 335 If you know of anyone wishing to buy it I bought it brand new in 2004/2005 (not sure which). I haven't played it all that much and as such it's in good condition. It has an amazing translucent red finish on the top which shows off the stripe underneath that can be seen in some of the photos. It comes complete with Gibson hard case and I am after about £1800 for it. Cheers Mick
Here's one of the pictures available...
