1. The forecast for Monday is RAIN. Just thought that you might like to escape the weather/DIY etcetera and join me and Vic this Monday for a bit of banter, bass fondling and buffet biting. Jill On The Till is sorting out a spread of finger food for us all to enjoy, plus some vino and soft drinks. No worries if you don't buy anything ...just feel free to drop in and be sociable. As all our neighbours are not working, we'll have the (free) car park to ourselves. But then there's Twyford train station next door for those who want to not drive (perfect for you Ped!). Hope you can make it. Cheers, Phil
2. I nominate Mr Bassman to organise it. Come on Keith Might even come myself!
3. I've been a Camel fan since the first album, and was fortunate to see them live in the 70s. The last time was a bit of a weird one. They had just finished doing Snowgoose at the Albert Hall but had a contractual obligation to perform at Reading Town Hall. So they 'performed' it but a little less seriously. In fact the roadies were having a laugh with some of the backdrop projections. So, that was the last time they performed it in its entirety. Later, I saw Doug playing bass at a cellar bar in Reading (The Target) with his next band ...Mungo Jerry! Pete Bardens died not so long a go. I remember doing some demo recordings in a studio in Wokingham (late 70s) where I met his sister, who reminded me of Pete's Van Morrison/Them days. Richard Sinclair took on the low end duties of course. He's one of my personal favourite players. I was lucky enough to buy a fretless Jazz Bass off him (a 1985 MIJ) which he told me he bought in Japan on tour. It had Rotosounds on which were the last of the freebies he'd got whilst in Camel. I'll never sell it, and if anyone wants a mwah on it, then I've got it at Twyford. Think I'm going to have to start my day (off) now with Mirage ...what an opening number! Phil
4.
No question they are in good condition but i know many people (myself included) who would not pay the full advertised price for something that has been used and sitting around on a shop floor. Ive never tried a MoMark either, it looks like an interesting option.
Just tried the MoMark again into a 4x10, sounds really nice I don't really understand why you wouldn't buy something that's on a showroom floor? As far as most small specialist shops are concerned that means you wouldn't want to pay the asking price for anything they have in stock as all stock is out on show for people to try before they buy. In fact this is a real maxim at BassGear they don't advertise a stack of stuff for sale that you can't come into the shop to try out. This is so important with high end gear like Fodera, Ritter, Alleva Coppolo etc. I've seen other people list high end brands as being available but they refuse to actually stock them and offer a 'special order' service only. I think the only things at BassGear that are 'duplicate' stock are some stock Aguilar Tone Hammer heads. Every single other item they have is on display
5.
Some great pics there, could anyone that had taken pics email me them please? [email protected]
I've sent you some iPhone snaps Patrick, but they're not to the standard of Ped's! Thanks, BTW, to you and Andy for organising the bash, which was a joy to attend. I will bring even more basses next year, I'm sure. Phil
6. ..., plus whatever amps Phil brings from Bassgear. Will super lightweight Aguilar Tone Hammer 350 & 500 & SL 112 do?
7. If you see a silver grey van going up the M40 on Sunday morning at 40 mph, that's me ...hoping my fuel tank will get me there & back!
8. Hi folks, I can confirm that this event will see the world debut of the new LEFT HAND ONLY range by Overwater ...well the prototype anyway! The Overwater Sinistra range is a project that Chris May and I have been working on since last year. It is exclusive to Bass Gear Ltd. I will be seeking user feedback at this event that may influence the final configuration of the regular line. No prices set yet but should be more affordable than most UK Overwaters. If you are umming and arrring whether to come to this event, you REALLY SHOULD! See you on Sunday, Phil
9. I was shown two Jeff Finch six string basses today by a pro who commissioned Jeff to make these 20 years a go, and was most impressed. If anyone can share links or stories about this luthier (who I must confess was not previously known to me) I'd love to learn more! Thanks, Phil
10. Nice work from Enrico. Good luck with the sale!
11. Have a bump from me for your exquisite German babies, Mick.
12. I'm interested in such an event because Bass Gear is pushing lefty basses in 2012. We are launching a Left Handed (only) bass range in conjunction with a very well known UK luthier at the London Bass Guitar Show in March. By then we will also have some other high-end Lefty basses in stock from other top bass brands. This could be an deal way of allowing several players to try out some tasty lefties in one go.
13.
Pretty sure Phil has a pic of a Standard & a Custom hanging side by side (both sold now). I'll message him & see if he can post it here
Yes, here's that rare shot ...only occurred for one day (The YY Standard went before I could print a ticket) and the Deluxe sold soon after. We have two more YY Standards ordered which are due around Easter, plus around May time we are expecting two of the new Emperor 5 Standards. The Standards are being made in very small batches and are typically taking around 8 months from order to delivery. The one pictured here, played really well, which is why it found a good home within 24 hours of arriving!
14.
Are you goin to change your name
Dorset2finger?
15. Our good friend, Bernhard Lackner, is appearing at Bass Day on Sunday. He's coming in from Austria and has asked if some kind person in the bass community can help him out with an Aguilar rig for the occasion. His website has his email address on. http://bernhardlackner.com/ Say you're from Basschat of course! Thanks, Phil
16. All is looking good. Pleased to see a Top Name bass player has requested to attend. Should be able to seat a few more though, so do let me know quick!
17. Just wanted to say thanks to all who have seen this thread and been in touch.about coming. There's a handful of seats still spare in case anyone wants to come (see original post). Cheers, Phil
18.
I think we've gone a bit off-topic guys - and the lefthanded debate has been covered several times in my time as a member (a little over 2 years) - usually winding up as a slanging match between those who get it and those who don't. To answer the OP's question, there's no musical reason why a lefthanded instrument needs to be anything other than a mirror image of a righthander. To be picky, the pots issue is simply a part of the mirror image thing - some of you may need to think about that one for a while. (The lefthanded equivalent of a log pot is an antilog pot I believe.) If the manufacturer gets it correct it should all feel and work the same only the other way round. Generally speaking Japanese and English makers (especially bespoke luthiers) are best at this, and American makers are historically the worst - hopefully they've improved since I last bought an American instrument. Oh, and there is one other thing about lefthanded instruments that you might like to think about - they usually cost more - which is a bad thing! Hope this helps.
Thanks for this and all other OT posts. I'm going to make 2012 the year of the Lefty, judging by the forward orders I've got/placing for LH basses!
19. Is a LH version of a bass needing to be any different in any way to a RH version, other than be a 'mirror' image? Please forgive my obvious ignorance in this matter, but as I make a positive attempt to include left-handed basses in my ordering of instruments, I have been wondering if makers do anything different to the design, and if they don't ...should they? Phil
20. There are a few free places available to attend this event that Bass Gear has just organised as a result of us taking on the UK sales for Ritter Instruments of Germany. It's not a sales show ...they don't make many! Just an interesting insight in to the world of a very much talked about luthier and to see his creations being used. Just email [email protected] to ask to be put on the list. Jens is very good humoured and witty and speaks great English. He'll be bringing a few tasty instruments along and talking about Ritter basses and how they are made and who uses them, plus they'll be some live grooves with some Ritter basses on stage with Bass Gear's Chief Test Pilot, Tom Kent and his accompanying musicians. 7pm to 9pm at London's Institute of Contemporary Music Performance on Thursday 3rd November. More info at http://www.bassgear.co.uk/
21. Joanne 'Chocolat' Harris is a bass guitarist. So it says in her bio printed at the begining of "Blue Eyed Boy", her latest novel. Wonder if she uses a chocolate coloured Aguilar rig?
22. Well done Basschat. I'm sure it's all for the good. Can't have been easy, so thanks for all the undoubtedly long hours worked behind the scenes. Phil
23. Anybody who lends his bass to Martin Turner is a friend of mine! Brilliant communicator and top Bass Bloke. Enjoy drowning that guitarist of yours with that 4ohm TecAmp L115 I sold you, T!
24.
This man is the tops guys. Phil saw that I was advertising for a Tecamp 1X15 cab. He got in touch, we agreed a price, and he met me on time here in Nottingham with the cab. The cab is like new and exactly as described. He is a true gent and a real nice man to deal with. I have no hesitation in recommending him to fellow Basschatters! Thanks Phil !
Cheers Tony. It was a pleasure to meet you and I'm so glad the cab fitted in to your boot AS WELL as sounding great! I might add that it was my own cab and not advertised through the business ...I'd hate to think dealers jumped on to every 'wanted' thread here to try flog their regular stock items!
