1. They hated your suggestion of building a non-standard Tele didn't they
2. "It drives me nuts when luthiers put flat pickups on a bass with a radiused neck, for example." from http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2013/04/03/bass-ramps-the-how-and-why/ Are there any other sort of pickups? Short of having the windings or case custom made.
3. I use Auritech Music with my band and Auritech Travel on the bike, the Christmas tree type, not the custom fit ones. I've no real evidence that they work beyond the fact that I don't have ringing in my ears after either activity!
4.
I then put the inserts in by putting them onto a threaded rod and turn the drill by hand to force them into the hole. This ensures then go in vertically rather than wobbling around all over the place which is what happens if I do it by hand.
How do you screw the inserts in? I'm refurbishing a garden bench at the moment, and on all the inserts I've seen the thread goes all the way through, so using a threaded rod like that won't screw the insert in. I did think of lining it up with a piece of plain bar, but again you can't get the hex key in the end to screw it in as the bar/threaded rod is in the way. Confuddled
5. Ok so one of these isn't an original, but it's an indication of how far we've come since I started recording us, and for once the levels were about right so you can mostly hear everything The other three are absolutely work in progress and neither the drummer or vocalist couldn't make the session so Matt had to play and sing. Have a listen and see what you think. I'm just impressed that I've managed to write workable songs I've changed the link to a SoundCloud one, it allows comments and the like. https://soundcloud.com/simon-orchard/sets/330ml
6. If this is in the wrong section then please move it, it's part of the backline/monitoring world though When to use the phantom power option on my mixer? My mics are Behringer SM58 clones (I think) plus a drum mic. The vocalist has a real SM58. Do I need to use the PP for these? If I do, and that's fine, can I then run an XLR cable from my amp and the guitarists amp to the mixer for monitoring/recording purposes without damaging anything, would it be better to get an active DI box for both of the amps to isolate them from electrical death?
7.
Saw this for real at the SE Bash. It looks and feels good enough to eat
Hey, you can't reveal a finished bass anywhere else then the Midlands Bass Bash. Then you can take it on tour once we've vetted it
8. Why are you using a piezo bridge as well as magnetic pickups, is the sound noticeably different when playing?
9. I was using the Z-Tron, I've had a proper go at it and I've given up on all the synth modellers, they've all got the "buwahp' artifact at the beginning of most notes but not consistently. I've gone to the Flanger now, with a rate and resolution that is fast enough to sound almost flat. It works well in my opinion.
10. Andyjr1515 used something on the Psilos bass that hardly darkened the wood, to the extent that to my eyes from the photos it looks unfinished. That may be of interest?
11. Cool, thanks chaps. I'm in Scotland from tomorrow, but I'll have a play when I get back and let you know how I get on.
12. I'm having a slight problem getting a synth sound I like from my MS60B, the three or four simulated pedals in there all start the note with a weird muwah-pop kind of thing. I'm using something else as a synth as it sounds better, but it's still not great. Does anyone have any general settings that I can start with to get an 80's synth sound? It's for Kids in America for reference.
13. One thing i have noticed from the Midlands Bass Bashes is that when someone else plays my bass through my amp it sounds exactly how I want it to sound. When I play it, it doesn't.
14.
Far too many great basses being built at the moment...hard to keep up with all of them. Have you thought about a Builders/Luthiers Bash? Bring along all the BC builds...I'd bring both of mine.
We do already, it seems to have settled at the Midlands Bash, or at least, home-made outnumbered shop-bought this year
15.
Next job was fixing the trussrod cover. It will be held with a single pair of neodymium magnets. Because it has been cut out of the headstock plate itself, it's a very close fit and is quite thick, it needs some method of getting it out easily! Enter, one fingernail slot: And one fingernail groove in the headstock plate: And a neat, tight fitting cover that can nevertheless be removed easily when necessary: While this shot is here, worth mentioning that I still haven't decided whether to put in some hidden ferrules or not. Also, ignore the couple of gaps around the swifts - I haven't done the filling yet!
Are the grooves from the string holes a byproduct of stringing it and is there a way of having a ferrule to protect the wood?
16.
WAIT!!! Shoot this instead, it's a favour to all of us: And it's even pink!
I'm not surprised she has a face like that, sitting astride a giant ice cube.
17. Are you using them directly from the desk, or does one slave off the other? I used my pair of Wharfedale Titans as stage monitoring for the local AmDram panto I did music and lights for this year. They were both working until the last night when one stopped. I tried new cables, swapping the slave/master over. All sorts. When I got them home afterwards I set them up in the living room and found a button on the back that swapped between CD/Audio in and the XLR in. Just wondering whether you have a similar setup and the button got pressed when you set up.
18. Why haven't you finished carving the front before starting the control cavity?
19. Whereas I put mine at the end to try and keep the output reasonably consistent despite what I do to the signal with drive and effects! I do have a combined compressor/noise gate though, so it sort of has to go there. Whatever works for you really
20. Sure?
21. You could replicate the body shape with the top of the neck fitting where the neck pocket would be. I suspect it would look hideous, but it might be worth a mockup for a laugh
22. I have donated the £49 from the bass raffle and Spondonbassed's kind donation to Basschat as agreed yesterday.
23. Thank you all for coming. It's nice that there are so many repeat customers/offenders! Thank you to Jo, Mrs. Norris and whoever made the chocolate chip biscuits for making cake and biscuits and to those who also brought cake, this is rapidly becoming the custom bass builder and cake bash Raffling Andy's amazing prize of an acoustic bass raised £49 that will go to BC towers to keep Ped and Kiwi in Jaffa Cakes! Pictures later when I can be bothered to get up from the sofa Thank you all once again, another one next year?
24. IT'S BASH DAY As always despite having months to do it I always forget something. In this case it's to mention that I was going to do another raffle, so if you have any spare relevant tat or custom basses lying around then bring it
25. Jelly and ice cream, now there's a way to make a bass messy Unfortunately for RR I moved the event to cope with me being in Germany for our nephew's confirmation. Rest assured, all things being equal, it will be back to it's normal slot next year. Oh bugger, have I just committed to doing it *again*?
