1.
Why dont the 4 string army wise up and embrace the future. Just because you cant play a five string dont give other folk grief about it.
Attitudes like that are why people don't like bassist that play 5 & 6 strings, more strings doesn't make you better,
 2.
As I stated earlier in the thread, I've just the one bass. My second neck has now arrived so I've not got fretted and fretless available.
Cool looking bass but doesn't it get anoying having to keep swapping the necks?
 3. It's a bit over £300 the new SUB Ray5 is the best cheap 5 string I've played.
 4.
I tend to play along to the original tracks, but that sounds a good idea
I basically do the same, I grab the audio from youtube & import in into audacity so I can slow it down & loop sections.
 5.
Again, you don't really need a second bass - you could play the standard tuning songs on the drop C bass or learn all the repertoire on a 5 string, so really, the two bass option is still a choice, making it a want reather than need. Not criticising your choice here by the way, just making the point that it is a choice not a necessity.
Neither is really an option though, as with most metal the songs are written for the tuning and riffs make heavy use of the open strings, for example sometimes we play "For Whom The Bell Tolls" it's got loads open E's that just wouldn't work with drop C.
 6.
Big difference between 'want' and 'need'. We all only need one bass, but the wanting is a very different story entirely for many of us.
I certainly need more than one, we swap between standard & drop c tuning a few times during a set, so that's 2 different basses needed. Are people really gigging without a backup?
 7.
Now thats funny because I have found all the same notes on mm 5 string basses so any music style that can be played on 4 can be done on 5, is a six different then? Your being drawn up the same path about what looks right!
Image matters, would you turn up at a blues or jazz gig with a flying V or BC Rich Widow? they've got the same notes
 8. I mostly play metal so with 5 & 6 string basses being common it's never been an issue, but I can see why some bands have issues with them, I wouldn't play a 6 string in a punk band just like I wouldn't expect the guitarist to turn up with a 8 string, it just doesn't suit the music.
 9. Not our best gig but thankfully nobody will remember it since the band after us screwed up even worse.
 10. I like low action but I'm stuck with the typical Fender ski jump at the heel of the neck, can't get lower than 2mm at the 12th fret without getting the neck sorted.
 11. I like mine, I don't use the modelling much, it's mainly for the stuff like choruis, flanger, autowah and to change the eq between fingers & pick, all of which it does fine for me. I considered replacing it with the b9.1ut before coming to the conclusion that it's just too big, it's another big piece of gear to carry that for my use won't really make much difference in sound, whereas the b2 fits in a backpack along with my cables, tools, etc.
 12. I feel more comfortable with it low, top horn below my bellybutton with the bass angled so the headstock is around shoulder level, any higher and my stomach gets in the way.
 13. Some of the Behringer stuff is nice, you can get some good dubstep tones from the BSY600 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ingKH3s2JHg and there's plenty of Axe-FX users with the FCB1010 Midi Controller, they certainly think it's good enough to use with a 2k Axe-FX.
 14. Best christmas song, ever, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od7GUy9XS7c
 15. Always been bass for me, don't why but I was drawn to bass. I've messed around a few times on guitars over the years but it never felt right.
 16. None, I just played the part slightly different that time nobody else even notices unless you really screw up or you play over the guitarists intro, it's the only time the guitarist in our bands notices the bass
 17.
Rawk bands tend to have set lists/crib sheets attached to monitors or on the floor (sneaky lot). I often have notes against songs on a set list where I need a prompt,
I play with lots of different bands so I always have crib sheets taped to the floor, I generally note stuff like the tuning, which bar the bass starts on, how many bars the bass stops for in the middle, patch changes, for a song like "killing in the name of" I note where that extra fill is. I couldn't imagine standing behind a music stand in a rock gig, I certainly wouldn't pay to watch one.
 18.
Aaaarrrrgggghhh! I've been talking myself in and out of buying one all week! Decisions, decisions.......
I know how you feel, I've already got a b2 which only gets used on a few songs, I don't need a b9.1ut but I want one.
 19.
Ah fair play I missed Cardiff Guitars, haven't really had much to do with them, might be due to their website ...otherwise there's not really much to choose from is there? Mostly flooded with cheapo brands & MIM Fenders. Try demoing a Stingray for example.
True there's limited choice aroud here but it still better than Cranes in Cardiff, went there last weekend & they've got sod all basses, it pretty much all guitars now
 20. Weclome,
ving here in Cardiff with its three crappy music shops that's one thing that gets to me on Talkbass, although I do realise that this is pure envy & not the fault of the yanks...
What's wrong with Nobles Music & Cardiff Guitars? never had an issue with either of them.
 21.
Seems fair enough when it comes to repairing/replacing it. All the band gets use of it, because you're not going to get gigs without one.
You could say the same about any bass gear, but nobody expects the band to pay for it, you're responsible for the stuff you use imo.
 22.
Never occurred to me to take a bigger cut of the money-actually I may bring up the subject!
Does everybody else use it? doesn't seem fair asking for a bigger cut from people who don't use the PA.
 23. Our singer and the guitarists share the PA so they payed for it but sooner or later is going to cause issues when one of them leaves or something breaks. I've found that PA's cause nothing but arguments over who owns what & who pays for what so now I try to stay out of it, I own and maintain my rig & leave the PA stuff to them.
 24.
If you've got a good amp and heavy enough strings, tuning down to A is pretty beastly
Why stop at A, the cool kids tune down to E0
