1. I had a Wal MKII midi bass (sold it to Spiritchaser)...it allows you to experiment and do some pretty cool stuff and it opens up possibilities which are mindblowing. I used it on a couple of tracks on a solo cd I'm still working on and I had a couple of marimba-and synth-solo's (you can blend the clean bass-sound with the midi-sound). People are amazed how tight the bass and the keyboardplayer play together I have to admit that your playingstyle has to be really precise and balanced. Midi-systems have some difficulty to deal with muted notes which they find hard to "understand" or place. But if you learn to deal with these rules and give the midi-bass "clear" information thanks to a good technique, you can do really inspiring things. Good luck with the sale !
2.
Yeah I know... but this is what I'm talking about - check this out:
About ten years ago I had the honour to play two concerts (Brussels and Lausanne) with this percussionist Trilok Gurtu. I was so nervous that there was sweat on top instead of in the palm of my hands. He played a solo in 5/4 while I had to keep the tune going. Very kind musician to play with but on a musical level which was planets beyond mine. I treasure the memory of those two concerts.

4. Great basses with a broad range of sounds !
5. Beautiful bass and a top person to deal with as I have experienced...good luck with the sale, Nels !
6. I'm not that fond of the tone Verdine gets when you isolate it but it works great in the band (my favourite : Fantasy). I watched a live dvd a couple of weeks ago (a shared bill with the band Chicago) but it was obviously re-played since Verdine throws his hands in the air at one given moment and the bass-line continues ...
7.
Hi This bass is as new not just in good condition and it was built by the people who made Wal great. A new one is just a bass built under license, very good but it's never going to be the same as owning a real Wal. I think it is priced about right, it will cost you £3300 for a new one, you'll have to wait a while, it's a voyage into the unknown and it never have a collectable value. This one however is a classic, £3500 seems a fair price.
I sold a similar one about a year ago (not a scratch on it), I asked for 2500 euros (even at that price it took quite some time to sell it (only one person was interested)). But if you find the right person at the right time, you might pull if off. I think that in the States there is a bigger market when you want to achieve this sort of price for a Wal bass.
8. I was offered an endorsement for Peavey a couple of years ago. I loved those Peavey Cirrus basses and in a local shop I was asked by someone who worked there who had seen me play a couple of times if I would be interested in Peavey gear. I was interested and I met the Peavey representant. He told me to go to Frankfurt (the music fair) and check out the Peavey stuff and write down what I wanted. So I did but after a couple of months I gave it all back. I used Peavey amps and speakers but they couldn't compete with the material I already had (Epifani gear) and I preferred other basses like my Wal etc.. There wasn't any real pressure to use it all of the time (I did in some tv-shows) but I felt more at ease when I returned it. It was mentionned that I would have to give some sort of bass clinic but I wasn't keen on that idea since that isn't the easiest thing to do..
9. I saw the new Miller CD in the shop but I didn't buy it although I normally always do. I have most of his CD's since I like his style. Unfortunately I find it hard to listen to a complete album, after three or four songs I have enough. A couple of times a year I pick up one of his cd's and listen to it but if I play it too often I easily get bored. Something in the repertoire, the production, I don't know. I have to admit that I thought "Silver Rain" was one of his best. He is still a fantastic bass-player and has accomplished amazing things but maybe I'm waiting for the moment that he re-invents himself which is not easy when you have that famous style. Most of us don't even reach that level so going beyond that is even harder.
10. Pfew...I love this sort of finish. Recently I tried out an Overwater for the first time and it had a great sound. The B-string had a great sustain and the controls offered a wide range of sounds. Good luck with the sale !
11. Each one of these bassplayers had a huge influence on me...they opened doors which I didn't know about. I saw them performing with the SMV show in Gent and it blew my mind, one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Even soundwise it was great, no blurring lows, no undefined sounds ...They blended perfectly together and they treated each other with mutual respect. Also hats off for the keyboardplayer, great solo's and tasteful playing.
12. Nice one, Oliver ! Good luck with the sale... I sold a couple of my Wal basses...I used to own five but now I've just one left. Of course you want to have them all but in the end the basic sound you love comes from just one Wal bass.
13. Wish it got sold...I keep coming back to this one (checked some youtube clips with Elrick basses and they made the GAS even worse but I feel strong enough).
14. It looks pretty beat up but as long as the sound is ok ... I have a Pedulla Buzz fourstring-fretless and I like it a lot (bought it from Jenswest here on bass-chat). There's something special about Pedulla's, they really have something distinctive. They have a sort of hi-fi sound but still have warmth and a great percussiveness of their own. Hard to explain but I'm a fan. Good luck with this one..
15. I noticed that the bass got sold... maybe you should have put a minimum price in your add. It's a shame that this fine instrument didn't raise more money. I was interested but then I realised that the time for collecting basses (however beautiful or excellent they are) is a bit through. Someone was really lucky tonight !
16. Congratulations with the bass ...looks like a very inspiring instrument ! That action looks too good to be true :-)
17. Thanks, I'll see how it goes.. not really expecting to sell this within a day. These are expensive basses and you have to find just the right person at the right time ànd with that amount of cash so luck has something to do with it. When I use other basses like my Wal, Pedulla or Fender Jazz, they also have a different feel. Alembics are really a league of their own. If a sale doesn't go through maybe a trade brings a solution. There's no hurry.
18. Thanks for the information... i'll think about your proposition. I do love buckeye burl. I'll first see what this post might arouse. (it's still not easy to find the right words in English when you're native Belgian :-)) I wanted to write "proposal" but I knew something wasn't right...
19. Thanks ! Luckily it doesn't really hàve to go (I enjoy it a lot in my living room) but there is a luxury problem :-)
20. I bought this bass just a couple of months ago from a Belgian bass-player and I believe this also used to belong to BC-member Alanbass. I always wanted to have a bass like this and in my opinion it is one of the best and most beautiful basses ever. When I bought it the previous owner told me that he rarely played it and that he only looked at it and saw it as a beautiful thing like a painting. I told him that I wanted to play it and use it and that I wasn't intimidated by its looks or prestige. It turned out I was wrong : it's a funny thing but after four live gigs with this instrument I know what he means. I am blown away by the sound and just last weekend I got compliments from bass-players in the audience but I just don't feel at ease with this thing, it's a bit too posh and in contradiction with my old Wal or Fender I am terrified to damage it. Not easy to explain but you have to force yourself to take this bass to a pub-gig and that's the sort of gigs I've been doing the last months. That pointy thing also forces me to bring a bass stand along and that is something I rarely do. I also want to say that these basses have long necks, this is not a short scale. I have owned around 100 basses but it's the first time I sell an instrument because it looks too good (...) So I find myself putting this for sale (although a trade is also possible) It's a Mark King Standard, serial number 02MJ12900 (build in 2002), it has red leds along the side, I actually don't know what sort of wood it's made of (if someone could help me out). It has all the Alembic-sound ingredients and with the help of the filters countless sounds are possible. From a Clarke-twang to a funky slap to great mids, it has it all. There are no scratches or anything, this thing has really been taken care of (you hàve to..) There is a pre-shaped case for this great bass and it can be picked up (there's a Eurostar to Brussels) or send. I'm asking 3150 euros...it doesn't really have to go but if I could have something which I can take along a bit more, I would feel more at ease Trades : Fodera Monarch VW, Fodera Imperial (if possible not a 5 string but who knows) or perhaps a sixties Fender Jazz. Some cash to even out the differences can all be discussed. For any questions, feel free to email me. Thanks for looking..
21. He makes me want to own a fretted Pedulla...he's a great player and he doesn't sound like other famous bassplayers (he escaped a bit from the Jaco-herd)
22. I noticed that times changed a lot...when I started playing bass many years ago it became a habit that after the gig musicians would check the gear and ask me questions. Nowadays (since more than ten years) I hardly get any questions anymore, it has become very rare. In the eighties it was a more bass-orientated time with special basses like Wal, Jaydee and gear like Trace Elliot. It has become more dull around here and no one is interested anymore, you see the same Fenders and Ampegs everywhere and young bass players seem to be less curious (I would love to know what Epifani is, where it comes from, etc but not too many players have the same attitude) I still check gear and remember it for years ...
