1.
For a freebie bit of software it is totally amazing.
+1! I bought my Macbook specifically for Garageband. It's a really cool piece of software.
  2.
I'm pretty sure I'm the second best bass player in my band. All this talk of sacking folk has got me on edge
You're not the only one! The drummer parted ways with us a little while ago and we've got a temporary replacement who's amazing. I've been realising that it's been over a year since I've put any solid hours of practise in. I think I better put some in quick before someone realises how rubbish I am compared to everyone else. lol
  3. lol... no lie, sat here listening to Elton John's Just Like Belgium. lol... Welcome to the forums!
  4.
Got a typo in the header there that got me excited for a second.
Me too!!!!
  5. I owned a Mexican Precision once... let's just say I was happier with the build quality of my Squire Precision. The OP almost described almost everything that was wrong with mine. I'll admit that experience has somewhat coloured my experiences of Mexican Fenders and now I'm probably more likely to buy a Squire, especially with the recent improvements in QC.
  6.
Hi mates As the title says, I am looking for a brand of strings (4-string, 34" basses) with a loose, soft, bendy feel. Preferred gauge is 40-100 but even 45-105 or 40-95 will be considered. In a few words: lower tension compared to other brands, given the gauge. Must be in the UK, steel or nickel alike. Roundwound only. What are your experiences with the brands you have tried?? Thanks in advance to everybody Cheers
The most bendiest strings I've ever tried are the EBS Titanium-plated strings. The low density of the strings make them very light and give a lot of top end (completely the opposite of what I want... but they're TITANIUM! I had to try them out!). Give Bernie Goodfellow a call. If memory serves me right, he's the UK EBS distrubutor. http://www.gbguitars.co.uk/ Hope that helps.

    I'm off to NZ.

    Hope everything works out mate.
  8.
I had one too ages ago, I totally agree with Steve, I though it was pretty awful and weedy sounding really lightweight though.
+1. Didn't get on it with tonally, but man it was so portable and convenient! For me it was the perfect backup bass.
  9. Welcome... and good to hear you're back in a band.
  10.
I hate the way the Yanks do it, 8th notes, quarter notes etc... I've seen it creeping into some guitar mags here, especially in the notes to tabbed transcriptions.
I actually like it. Although I do use describe notes as crotchets and quavers, when talking to people unfamilar with musical notation I find it easier for them to understand in terms of quarter notes and 8th notes.
  11. 6 strings and above is a lot of fun... but 4's usually enough for me.
  12.
customer service is probably not their forté.
+1! Ordered a case in. 3 weeks later, no word. Emailed them. No word. Emailed them again a week later. No word. Phoned them. No picks up. Phone them again, finally someone picks up and said they would investigate. Email them again to follow up and then tell me they've run out of stock (!) and they have it on order. 5 weeks later got my case, but they certainly don't have my custom anymore. If you do use them, I recommend you phone to double make sure they have it in stock. Also heard other stories similar to mine from other people when ordering online.
  13. In my own personal experience, a cheap electric bass is much better than a cheap electroacoustic. But then again, the electroacoustic does really look the part, cheap or not. Either way, you can go straight through the PA if you want. Alternately you can pick up a amp modeller simulator like the original Line 6 Bass Pod for peanuts.
  14. +1... It bugs me a lot when I hear a cover played like 30bpm faster than the original. Usually kills it stone dead. I think that some people just have only the concept of playing those notes, and just forget or are ignorant to the idea they're in the context of a song. One that stands out as particularly bad is when I hear Muse's Hysteria being played at a gazillion bpm. Completely ruins the groove and the different pushes and pulls of the accents natural to the line are completely lost. I think a lot of people mix up the idea of complicated and fast too often!
  15. I've often thought about that. How about the analogy of buying a banged up 30 year old car and putting up a mark-up and calling it a reliced piece. 'Fraid I'm guilty of buying into that myself. It's interesting to see how and for what reasons people assign certain value to items.
  16. I've had enough of band politics, and now prefer projects where there is an effective "bandleader". Some may call it a Dictatorship. I call it working without any bullcrap. I usually only do this where I respect the bandleader as a creative force. Do I get annoyed that sometimes if my ideas and suggestions aren't taken up. Yes. But at least things get done, gigs are booked and ultimately I enjoy myself more.
  17.
Apart from some dubious hype there's nothing actually misleading about his blurb - these are licensed by Steinberger so it's no more deceptive than mentioning Fender when flogging a Squier.
His exact words are: This is the Original 1986 Steinberger® Headless Bass Guitar From Hohner. It's just the way he's worded it that makes me uncomfortable. It's more than mentionning it, it suggests that it's an "Original 1986 Steinberger" rather than just a licensed copy. It's more like describing it as an "original 1997 Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray from OLP". I know I'm just playing semantics, but he is too.
  18.
What a c***. Also: 'you can get just about any bass guitar sound you want'
I owned this model before... also it was cool with its own charm, that's most certainly not true! Hate that the implication in the description is that the bass is a Steinberger. He walks a very fine between being ambigious and just plain deceptive. Pity someone's bound to fall for it and even if I do report it, using my past experiences with eBay, they'll do nothing much about it.
  19. I tried one years back when I was doing a spot of recording and the guy offered to let me use his RockBass Corvette. Was really impressed by the sound, and at this point I had never played a Warwick. I thought the built was alright, discounting the strong fret buzz. But I thought if I was impressed with a RockBass, I thought I had to try a Warwick. Then became a Warwick man and was gigging one as my main bass for about two years.

    Backup amps
I carry a decent DI just in case anything happens to the amp. Only happened to me once, but I'm glad I had it with me!
+1 on both accounts.
  21. Hey there... this is a press release from my band to advertise for a new drummer (no nasty "creative differences" stories, I promise!) "Jamie West Band are looking for a new drummer to complete a rock trio. Influences include Bruce Springsteen, Ben Harper, Bob Dylan and Muddy Waters. JWB has been building a following for 4 years, including a tour of Austria and an ongoing residency in Leicester Square. The band are currently looking for a recording contract and have received great press in the various media outlets. JWB are looking for someone who is between 20-30 years old and can supply their own equipment (and ideally transport). Rehearsals will be paid for, so there is no financial burden. A high level of skill and lots of enthusiasm are essential. http://www.jamiewestband.com"
  22. Can I just vouch for Mark and say he's a really cool guy. Hope it goes well mate. Frodo
