Best way to start playing with a Markbass is to turn the EQ flat but have both the VLE and VPF off. Then dial in a smudge of VLE if you want to take away some treble zing. The midscooping VPF might sound ok by itself but will bury your tone in a band mix, so go easy on it - I can't believe somebody earlier suggested you get the best sound by turning it up to full! A lot of people try these amps out with all knobs including the filters at noon, which isn't getting the best sound out of the amp.

It's not that hard to make a PCB on the cheap. You can use a special pen to draw the traces, or iron on a piece of transfer paper (glossy magazine paper in a laser printer works wonders apparently), then get some etching fluid and you're set! I will be going down this road once I've got a few fuzz circuits built up on breadboard...

Just buy a Nano Small Stone phaser, I got mine for only £38 new online! You could try to build your own but it's a lot of components to squeeze onto a small board.

I'm selling this Ibanez EW20ZWE acoustic guitar. It's only a 3 months old and in as new condition, but it was a bit of an impulse buy and I'm not really playing it as my fingers don't like playing on it's skinny strings! It's the best looking acoustic I've ever seen, and reviews often say that this is the best acoustic guitar you can get for under £300. The preamp on it sounds amazing, and it even features a balanced XLR output so you don't need to use a DI box if using it live. There's also an on-board tuner! VT Bass is a good candidate. I use mine to make my Markbass amp sound like a dirty Ampeg. I also have a modded Bad Monkey, and running that into the VT sounds awesome.

Have you got it set for high or low gain? High distortions and fuzzes can make your bass drop out the mix pretty easily, but if you're droppiing out at low gain grit settings then maybe you should try another pedal. I've not tried the Multidrive, but my Bad Monkey does the opposite - the tubescreamer style mid-boost really makes the bass stand out in the mix.

I played my first ever bass on Denmark St, some fretless acoustic, whilst out shopping for an acoustic guitar. That converted me, and I went back the following week looking for a fretless electric, and ended up with a Yamaha RBX from the Bass Cellar. Staff were pretty grumpy though! Went back a year or so later looking for a Squier Vintage Modified Precision, and not one shop in the area had one. I could have ordered one in for £250, but thought why do that when I can get one online for £180 delivered? 'Tis the way things are heading, these shops can't really compete with online retailers. I have never bought a pedal from a store either, they are always massively overpriced. For instance the last purchase I made was an EHX Nano Small Stone for £38 online, and it's £60 in some shops! I just pop in to look at the merchandise, or buy a pick/cable/book if I need too these days... -

I bought a can when I was going to make my own board but ended up buying a Pedaltrain so I've never even opened it. If you want it, gimme a fiver and I'll send it to you!

They pop up quite regularly actually (on here at least, maybe 1 every couple of months) and typically go for around £150 - £175.

There's a Demeter Compulator schematic on freestompboxes.org and Baja, the guy who reverse engineered it, designed an optical limiter which he reckons is even better. Just a thought in case anyone wants to try rolling their own!

If you go for a pedal tuner, the Korg Pitchblack owns. It's true bypass too, so it won't mess with your tone.

Which is precisely why I went for the Diamond - it can run at 9-24v, the higher the voltage the higher the headroom. It distorts when run at 9v when you really dig in, but at 18v (using a Diago 9v - 18v voltage doubler adaptor tip) I can't get it to distort even if I boost into it. The Maxon CP9-Pro+ has a similar voltage doubler built into the pedal. It's not just actives that can cause a problem with some comps, abusive playing on a hot P-Bass is enough to clip most 9v comps too.
