Didn't try the Ashdown cabs as I was head shopping rather than cab shopping, so I just plugged into an Orange OBC410. They only had Orange gear in their soundproofed room and so I just chose something that was available rather than lug something else across the shop! Just checked the video, the drive sounds much nicer when it's just on the edge with the gain around noon, he overcooked it a bit there and didn't show much gain variation.

Hmm, I thought the opposite to you - the Orange Terror 500 is the bassiest micro head I've ever played and I thought the Ashdown MiBass was lacking in comparison and had to turn the bass up to match the OTB! Also I think the 5 year warranty probably also applies to the MiBass as I got the same with my CTM15!

Yeah, I tried a 2.0 out at PMT, lovely sounding head with a nice gritty overdrive. I imagine the old one is similar but with a more flexible EQ. I'm only playing at home at the moment so I picked up the CTM15 instead whilst I wait for my Terror to be fixed!

I used a 5-string in my old band that played in drop D, although I would rather tune to D-standard rather than drop D on a 4-string unless there were a lot of tunes that relied on the open A/D/G strings.

Should be fine, I have played the Micro VR head into a SVT210AV with a 5 string. Obviously no real deep lows coming through but you don't want them travelling through the walls at home playing volume! The CL stack has lower power and lower rated drivers but it should be fine as a practice amp still. There's some good Orange Crush combos around too that would be worth looking into if you were a fan of the Orange sound that are probably around the same price as the Ampeg Micro CL stack?

They don't do the 5's in the new transparent blue/black, but maybe one day!

I wondered what the bass was too. Got somewhere in the ballpark with my T40, both pickups with the tone rolled off halfway and volume turned down a bit on the neck pickup!

Apparently it's fine with most other cabs, Perhaps the impedance of a pair of SVT210AV cabs dips slightly below 4 ohms and the Micro VR head can't tolerate it other amps can. If you're not using the stack though so don't need the Micro VR head to complete the look, there are plenty of other amp options to choose from - there are a few 500W heads you could pick up used for the price of a new Micro VR for example!

Spotted that on TB the other day - there's a thread about these basses where the guy from SBMM is asking what finishes people want to see - I want a transparent orange version of that blue one, but otherwise I might pick one of those up in blue if they ever make it to our shores!

I'd go for the Vintage over the Squier primarily because I prefer a wooden board to a plastic one! You should try before you buy with the ebanol boards Squier use, they're a bit marmite.

I was going to suggest the Catalinbread SFT, but I tried an Ashdown MiBass micro head recently and it sounded very similar - there's one of these for sale on here right now for £260!

Should be totally hum free if put together well, unlike a PJ combination.

Overwound pickups can sound louder but often also darker. The vintage pickups are actually pretty bright and growly, even though you might associate 'vintage' with 'muffled'. Where abouts in Cambs are you? I have a Fender Original '62 reissue and a Duncan SPB-1 sat here unused, although if you want something hotter I'd look for a Wizard Thumper or SPB-2. Some of the DiMarzio pickups are very modern sounding and growling, as are the US Fender ones before they changed them in 2012.

Ampeg SVT210AV! Weighs under 12kg, lightest cab I ever had. I stack a pair of them up high and they sound great. Or if you've got the coin, the Bergantino NV115 takes some beating.

Yup, valve amps aren't necessarily less reliable than solid state - never had an issue with my AD200B, but my Orange Terror Bass recently died on me.

I've thought about doing just this but with a reverse P - live the motherbucker idea though!

Looks legit. Those are notorious for using 4-string Jazz pickups which do a poor job of picking up both the low B and high G at the same time!

I prefer the original too, I like the bass boost it adds as you roll off the treble! The greasebucket is good if you just want to tame the harsh treble without affecting lows if you're say using a pick and rounds, but if you're using flats and want that old school Motown sound, the original circuit where it's at. I bought a greasebucket-esque Precision wiring harness from Kiogon, tried it out but ended up not using it. I've been meaning to list it with a bunch of other items but if anyone wants it, PM me!

I was this close to buying the CTM100 that was up here for sale over Xmas, probably for the best that I missed the boat as my wife and neighbours are having a hard enough time as it is with the 15W! She doesn't understand that it needs to be loud to sound its best! Going to start looking to join a band again soon though, so I may pick one up at some point.

Disappointing to hear it's a solid state pre, but it sounds great as it is, it's like a hybrid amp done the right way round! Even though the LB30/CTM30 is all tube, the LB I had a couple of years ago sounded very bright and brittle compared to this, not helped the fact it had no gain control. The 15 is perfect for bedroom/studio use, I would consider getting a CTM100 for rehearsals/gigging in the future. Anyway, I took it into PMT today and couldn't reproduce the crackling issue at all - it had been getting better since day one and has now almost disappeared completely. The noise levels were the same as their shop model, ie pretty quiet but not silent with gain at min and master at max, and getting very noisy with the gain cranked. Bit of a wasted trip in the end, but good to know that mine isn't any noisier than it should be. Might try some replacement EL34s down the line but happy with the stock ones for now.
