The Sterling's are ceramic whereas most Stingray pups are alnico, so that's something to bear in mind. A classic 2-band EQ circuit will also help if you're going after the traditional Stingray tone. I have a Ray4 coming my way so I'll be looking to mess about with the electronics on that too! Leaning towards Nordstrand for the pickup. I also have an East 3-band pre which sounds similar to the 2-band but with an added mid control - whereas the modern Music Man 3-band said have a harsher more aggressive sound. The Retrovibe Stinger is a cheap way to get the 2-band tone too, but it'd look odd on a bass with holes for four pots!

Look at other band's pages to get ideas, but gig listings (as Facebook events so they show up in people's calendars and they can invite others), photos, audio links (Soundcloud / Bandcamp) and YouTube videos are pretty much a must.

Quite often I'll look online to see what bands are playing in nearby pubs. More often than not the bands listed have almost zero online presence, and since I have no idea what they are like, I end up not going to see them. Having a simple FB page is not hard to set up, and may result in more people coming to your gigs. Simples.

I am still yet to find a fuzz I like more than my TAFM!

Delivery is from the UK if you select the UK warehouse. You can choose to have it sent from China too, although not sure why you would want to! I must say, I love the ODB-3 though, my favourite high gain distortion. Through a dark sounding amp (Orange Terror) and tweeter-less cab, it rips.

If you for example EQ in a bass boost and have it before the compressor, playing low notes will make the compressor clamp down more than it otherwise would, so the comp is fighting your EQ changes, therefore you might want the EQ after the compressor. On the other hand, say you're a heavy fingerstyle player and are using the EQ to get rid of clank - you might then want the compressor after the EQ, no point feeding the compressor frequencies it's going to react to when you are just going to cut them afterwards. So, it depends!

Try fitting an S1 switch to the Jazz for series/parallel switching. Supposedly sound more like a P-Bass when in series. Otherwise, as Loz says, use the EQ!

I use Status half rounds on fretless. They are rounds ground down to be smooth as flats. Less tension and a bit more zing than Chromes. D'Addario half rounds are even brighter I think. Might be worth a shot!

[/quote] Yeah, it's a bit of a minefield with device support, some devices support USB audio interfaces plugged straight in, some don't, etc. Apple is a lot simpler for a hardware manufacturer to support in this respect. I've never played an amp sim for bass that I've like the sound of (tried a fair few VSTs including Amplitube SVX) but am yet to try the latest generation modellers (Amplitube Orange, AxeFX, Line6 HD series, Kemper, iOS apps, etc). The Kemper profiling amp certainly has my interest.

Nice writeup. If you've got any clips of the drive pedal or overdriven amp sounds, I'd love to hear them! I've got a Nexus 7 - I much prefer Android over iOS, but the availability of music apps is the only thing I feel I am missing out on!
