1. There's only way to find out!
Does seem odd. But yeh, why not play along? As soon as they ask for any bank details or passport details, thats when to walk away. Or you could ask to be paid through paypal, see what they say to that! haha
Nothing to lose this way. Just don't give them your bank details or send them any money!
2. Sounds like progress! If he's big enough to admit to having memory problems and willing to work with you to find out where things are going wrong, then you could still have a band. And friends. One of our band members is deaf in one ear and registered blind. It takes some working round but is doable. It's also valuable in that we're closer and tighter for having greater awareness of each other's idiosyncrasies.
3. A young saxophonist I once played with decided to put on a playalong backing track. Whilst I'm far from the best bassist on the scene, I'd never dream of doing that to another player.
4. Bassace, would the practising technique video be Geoff's video on 'The One Thing'? I've found this to be tremendously helpful.
5. I feel just the same about the ten2 combo I got from the wonderful Keith of this forum. Doesn't it make a world of difference having good quality gear?!
6. You could take a couple of lessons with a double bass tutor - look for one who plays the type of music you're interested in. That way, you can get safely addicted, get some valuable advice, and have someone to take with you when you go to buy one of your own. If you tell us your location, you may have a friendly bcer nearby who would give you a few pointers.
7. Drain the blister with a sterilised needle (hold in in the steam from a boiling kettle for as long as you can bear it). Piece the blister away from the main playing meat at the base of the blister and gently apply digital pressure to drain it. Then cover the lot with super glue.
8. Yes. But like so many things in the DB world, it readily lends itself to a pun
9. Zellers are usually decent basses. Could you take an experience upright player with you to check it out? And budget another £2-300 for a luthier set up.
10. Here's a useful site: http://ehomerecordingstudio.com/
11. I started arco work 4 months ago and have fallen in love with the bow. It's helped me a lot with the pizz stuff too. I have a fuller tone and a much greater awareness of intervals. You just have to watch your callouses don't get too soft!
12. Chris, glad you're better. If you put a link to the clip maybe that would help
13. Looks like you get what you pay for. Soak them in almond oil, fine sand them with wet and dry, shave off burrs with a cut throat razor, play them in for a few months and you'll be fine!
14. So sorry to hear you'll be giving up the old bull fiddle. Someone is going to get a great bargain though!
15. Good communication, fast postage and great packaging on the book I bought from Phil.
16. On the opposite side of the coin, I've just smashed myself in the lip trying to put my bass in its case whilst worrying about work, trying to cook dinner and pour the coffee. Bah.
17. Couldn't agree more - I do gentle back exercises, have stopped smoking and drink less than I used to - all to further upright bass playing. I feel a lot better too. It's easier to put in the daily practice without the aches and pains and general muzziness of the head ...
18. And the hours of practice. As a teenager living in a bedsit, Danny Thompson had a notice over his door that he would see whenever he went to go out. It said 'Practise'.
19. And of course, Scotland is a beautiful place to visit. I went from Cardiff to Harrogate for my bass and have never regretted one millimetre of the journey.
20. These: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashbory_bass are the business, IMO. You should be able to pick up a second hand one for about £100. I went from ukulele to one of these and then onto the wardrobe.
21. The Mr Krinkle video reminded me of Stockhausen's Mittwoch which was utterly bizarre as well. And brilliant too.
22. Misery stick! Pete, you are broadening my world. I'd never heard of Mr Krinkle either, but just loved the youtube video.
23. I'm very curious too. If the Finale sounds loads better than the the Yita, then I reckon it's worth the extra. We need a Double Bass and Bow day. Roger? Owen? How are you fixed?
