1. Mmm - same price but will it stand up unsupported? If all else fails, maybe I could make one myself with an old tyre and a couple of castors!
2. Does anyone know where I could get one of these in the UK? My back urgently wants one. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Double-Bass-Buggie-Wheel-Alternative/dp/B005DN7GWE I already have a wheel but think it came off a supermarket trolley. All help greatly appreciated.
3. Stormin' night - a good three hours (with a break) of playing jazz standards with players of varying ability. We pretty much managed to keep the bar empty all evening, too. Result!
4. Realising I didn't want to be in a function band, particularly with a leader who again, was one of those 'instinctive' ones who I couldn't communicate musically with. Nice people, two rehearsals, songs not really to my liking. I was at the stage where I didn't want to say 'no' to any opportunity so learnt a valuable lesson!
5. On the calendar! I'll bring an eagerness to try a three grand bow!
6. It's that sort of behaviour that leads to hankering after a £42 grand bass ...
7. Acoustic! If you can wait until October, and make it to the proposed double bass bash, then you'll be able to try quite a few different models. Joe, if you are anywhere near Cardiff, you're welcome to try my acoustic and EUB to help you decide.
8. Any of the dates are fine by me so I'll go with the majority. Last time, I stayed with old friends I hadn't seen for years and now we see each other every few months. Reunited thanks to the double bass world!
9. I'm up for it. Great fun last time and so good to talk double bass to other enthusiasts and to be Nurse Sarah to Dr. Keith. Bring it on!
10. So, Goldsby is good as far as it goes, but it sounds like another book may be needed to honour European players? Rob, is this a project for you?
11. I find having a teacher for regular lessons keeps me going. Lately, really slowing down my playing and practising over a drone (I use a Cello Drones app) gives a meditative experience and improves intonation and ears into the bargain. Geoff Chalmers site is excellent, as stated above. My favourite book is John Goldsby's 'The Jazz Book' as it's got good exercises, an overview of influential players and points you in the direction of some great listening.
12. I visualise playing chord tones - this can last forever on a 12 bar blues, even you just stick to the one key. It really shows up the holes in your knowledge too.
13. Oh it was brilliant. It was wonderful. It was the best concert of my life so far. So inspirational and weren't they both having such a lot of fun? I loved it. (In case you hadn't gathered that.) Such a great treat. I wouldn't have bothered with the piano at all! And we were a lovely, friendly, warm audience. I felt like everyone there was a friend. I love Bristol.
14. You have good priorities, though. Friends are vastly important!
15. He's on at Colston Hall, 12.45 on the Sunday. What a great day! Gary Crosby and then Christian McBride.
16. Me too! Going to the Gary Crosby gig earlier in the day too. Maybe we could have a double bass meet up?
17. Marc, Ikea do a folding kitchen stool that takes up very little space. It's a one foot on the floor affair but might be worth a go. It took me a week or two to get used to it. Hope that helps.http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20199207/
18. You might look at J tone pick ups - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/107646-j-tone-electronique-db-pickups/
19. I am full of admiration for you and the wonderful Kate with her steak knife.
20.
Dyslexia and the spin offs can be totally disabling and not understood by those who don't have it. I was in the car with my 34 year old daughter over Christmas and when I said "Turn left here" she had to hold her left hand up and use it to help her know which way to turn. Likewise for a right turn.
For directions in the car, I can't think quickly enough which is my left hand (have to check for wedding ring) so I just say 'your side' or 'my side'.
21. As Marc says, my first DB was Bertha the Cool. My currrent old girl is called Geraldine, after my upright bass playing uncle Gerald, although to be honest it doesn't really seem to be taking hold. The Superlight is Skellybass.
22. Welcome to the wonderful world of upright bass. You'll have a blast.
23. Yita do a decent carbon fibre bow for a budget price: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Best-Selling-Carbon-Fiber-Double-Bass-Bow-French-Silver-/141566365921?hash=item20f60350e1 But it might be a hiding to nothing, bowing an EUB. I know mine sounds rubbish with the bow and is difficult to keep upright as well. You might need a proper wardrobe!
24. Like Bilbo says, if you can read charts, you'll be fine at jazz jam sessions. Why not go along and have a go, then you'll be in a better position to decide if you want to shell out on iReal or the Real books. The house band will have a bassist, and if you go up and say hello, then they will let you use their amp and their charts. Enjoy!
