1.
and now im officially broke :-)
In that case: welcome home, bro! Enjoy the site! I'm from Etten-Leur close to Breda. Can you see my house from where you are?
  2. Knowing a little bit about health, or lack thereof, I do sympathise with your situation. I've read the whole thread, but have not yet quite understood what you're saying. If you're saying your health is just way too bad for you to be able to do _anything_ at this point, then so be it. All the best wishes to you. Get your mom to forgive you and buy her some similar stuff, even if you have to take up a loan for it. I know that one someimes cannot get a loan, and so does your mum If you're saying that your health is such that you _could_ in fact do something, but that you just can't be arsed to take your responsibilty, well then you know the answer, and we don't have to spell it out. If you're saying that your health is such that you _could_ in fact do something, but that your fear for a health deterioration holds you back, then you are simply wrong. Even in periods of relatively deep depression, you can fight and you can even win. The fight itself _will_ help you. It will give you some health back (even if only temporary, this is too valuable to miss out on) and last but not least, at any rate it will help on your self esteem greatly. Been there, done that, read the litterature about it. Good luck!
  3. Hi Alan, Welcome to BC, and enjoy the company! They're a fun and friendly bunch whom us noobs can learn a lot from. A lot.
  4. As I think others have already indicated with other words: Case 1: You're a great composer or arranger in the players' eyes - giving them a lot of fun. You organise. You're the natural center of the band. For some time, people will want to play with you because of this. Some time later, the demand for wages comes up like a steel glove. You get trouble. Case 2: You're just another bloke, or your uniqueness is not recognised. You're in for a lot of work, a lot of trouble and a lot of conflict. So: Go for it if you know exactly what you're doing. But since you asked the question, I think you're already indicating that you do not know exactly. (BTW, personally, I've done the case 1 thing many times, but only for projects with limited time scope. Every constellation for the longer term has given me a MUCH more modest position. YMMV and allsorts of course.)
  5.
Bloody peasant!
Oh, what a giveaway! Thanks for providing me the chance to write that.

    Hey

Hi Tom, Welcome to the wonderful world of bass and basschat! I hope and trust you'll enjoy both.
  7. Hi Chris, Welcome to the surface! Enjoy your new status.
  8.
I didn't start playing sax until I was 40; now here I am at 67 starting on bass!
Now _that_ impresses me. Kudos!
What are "gaugeless strings"? please.
Oh, sorry. They are sooo thin, that your bass will sound like an air bass. In fact, in most or all practical situations, they're used exclusively on air basses. Sorry for not being clearer about that.
  9.
"By exploiting the workers - hanging onto outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society"
Dennis, there's some lovely filth down here.
  10.
IT'S TV GOLD, I TELLS YA!!
It sure is!
  11. Thanks for posting! That was a luvly read. From what I've heard of them, The Zombies are a hit or miss live these days. Some stuff is marred by those ghastly synth sounds and terrible synth parts (who plays that stuff? - can't be Rod now can it?). Some other stuff happily is spot on or better than that, sometimes surpassing the originals imho. Colin's voice is still luverly, yes. best, bert
  12. Goeiesmiddags! Tullepetaonestad? Nie te glaove! Ek kom van't Stijlorenrijk. Nie da'k 't vier, wor. (sorry, rather untranslatable)
  13. Hi Mike, Welcome to BC! I'm sure you'll find lots to explore. When you do not get the chance, your gear is the StingRay then? ;^) Enjoy! bert
  14.
Brave or stupid who knows at my age.
I for one hope the answer is "brave", 'cause I started half a year ago, at 55.
recommended bass crash course books (don't know if I am allowed to reference it here)
Yes, you are.
cannot believe how well the bass fits into my addictive personality!
Ha! Great to read you are a normal and balanced, humanoid person!
I will seek some lessons shortly from my son's guitar teacher.
OK, then be a good boy: Buy a 6 string SuperExtraShortscale bass, and string it with the thinnnest stuff you can find in the shed. Play him some bass chords. He'll love you for it.
not yet confident (or good) enough to pick up a bass in a shop, plug in and give it a go without feeling an idiot!
You _know_ the answer to that! 1) You _are_ an idiot. 2) Enter the shop. 3) Say "Hi, I am an idiot, but an idiot with money. I wanna compare stuff here. When I'm done making noise, is there someone here who can demo them for me as well, so I get an even better impression? Did I say I have a lot of Her Royal Majesty's Sovereigns?" See, you DID know! best, bert
  15. Hi Joe, Welcome to BC, and by all means share your wisdom with us. That and your accumulated gear! best, bert
Bert (een Brabantse Noord-Hollander) (I just told Niels who the really silly one on BC is, that's all. No reason to translate.)
  17. Hi Daniel, Welcome to BC! I trust you'll enjoy indeed. Irvine, eh? Cool! I've been in Ayrshire a lot, always staying in Coylton, and seeing stuff. Cheap bass? Thanks, but No thanks. Just send me a few bottles of The Arran single cask. That will do. Enjoy! bert
  18. Classical all the way. However, my ex has the classical, and I have this funny but well-built, well-playing boy's toy, a Peavey Tracer II: best, bert
  19.
In all fairness, I'm pretty terrible at bass.
Just in case: Being a total noob myself, I wasn't trying to tell you anything about your playing, but just got this image in my head of someone ruining his strings by using the axe as a bow. Then I just couldn't resist. best, bert
  20.
Posted earlier but wouldn't mind playing a few Primus, Tool or Mr Bungle tunes live! Don't know people with enough gear for Tool songs (I know I don't). And don't know people with the ability to play Primus or Mr Bungle tunes...gutted, they'd be fun to play to a crowd
+1 on all of them. I'm flabbergasted Mr Bungle would even come up in this topic, but earlier today I played Disco Volante and was thinking about trying to play some of that stuff when I grow up. best, bert
  21. You'll prolly get better exposition on the amps forum. Not everybody reads here, I guess. Sorry I can't answer. best, bert
  22.
Rotosound swing bass - 10 hours.
Oooh noooooo! Another one [s]aiming[/s] playing an Archer bass through a MarksMan amp! best, bert
  23.
If you want a cheap, versatile, quality starter bass, I would look for a used Yamaha RBX270.
+1
  24. No basses sold yet, happily, and I have NO plans whatsoever in that direction. Before, I'd sell every single synth for need og money when I wanted a new synth, partly because of demands from the marked. Now however, i buy everything cheap or used, and under normal circumstances I should be able to keep all of my basses, and I also suspect nobody demands that I invest in more modern basses than my Corvette and Bongo already are. Win win! best, bert
  25. Hi Bideford, Welcome to BC! I guess saying hello is just the first step of a long lasting relationship. Great site here. Are you new to playing an instrument then.or just new to (bass) guitars? At any rate, you'll find loads of info here, and loads of stuff to discuss. Some of what you wrote is easily recognisable to me: I played some clarinet because my daughter did, and some tuba because my son did. The instruments suddenly were readily available, one can say. Anyway: enjoy! best, bert
