  1. If they're still setting fire to English-owned holiday homes in Wales it'll probably feel just like California...
  2. For sale is my Wal MkII 5-string in a black gloss finish with gold hardware and an ebony fingerboard. Made in 1991, it's in excellent condition despite the fact it's now approaching its 31st birthday, the only significant wear and tear in three decades being a chip out of the poly finish on the very tip of the headstock. It's sporting a custom scratchplate that Kim at Charlie Chandlers made for it, but I understand it's held in place by the truss rod 'boat', so can be removed. Kim also did a full refret and PLEK last year, and it plays like a dream. A new set of D'Addario EXL-170 nickels have just been fitted. The tuners were replaced with Schaller M4S lightweights, but the original Schaller tuners are also included in the sale. At 4.9kg, it's not too heavy as Wals go, and balances very well on the knee or a strap. It comes complete with the original blue/grey case, fully functional with all catches working, and it even has a key! If you look closely you should be able to see the metal-handled allen key that the earliest Wals came with also in the case, although this originated from an older MkII I owned a few years ago. I'm not too keen to ship it for obvious reasons, so collection is preferred, but I can box it up securely and ship it (fully insured) at the buyer's cost and risk if picking it up is not possible. I got some rough costs from UPS for this, and within the UK would be approximately £125, USA and elsewhere £250+ (plus import duties and taxes payable in the destination country). Sorry, but no trade offers please. NOW SOLD.
  3. My first bass was a second-hand Baldwin 704 bought for me by my Dad for £30 in 1975. It was identical to the one in the pic below (not mine, I don't go in for quilt-making) but a previous owner had fitted a Gibson mud-bucker in the neck position, presumably hoping it might look/sound like an Epiphone Rivoli. After a while I realised that I looked incredibly unhip attempting to play Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple covers on a semi-acoustic, so I part-exchanged it for a new Antoria Jazz. I saw one of these for sale in a shop in Ladbroke Grove about 15 years ago, and they were asking £750 for it!
  4. With the greatest of respect, I don't think posting photos on here is the way to go with it. I'm a bit bemused that you haven't spoken to Martin or John to ask them what they can do to resolve your concerns. The original post that you attached your complaint to is nearly 13 years old, but if you've read it you will be aware of the fantastic work The Gallery have been doing for 3 decades, and their reputation for excellence that continues to this day. Martin and John have done work on a lot of my basses over many years, and have built custom instruments for me as well. Their work and customer service has always been impeccable, without exception. What I would suggest you do is speak to them yourself first, and see what can be done to resolve the issues you have. If you don't think the controls been fitted correctly, I'm sure they will be more than willing to find a way to resolve the matter, even if some time has passed since you had the work done.
  5. Steve bought my custom GSP Stingray, and took the time to travel the not inconsiderable distance to collect. A lovely fella, and we had a great chat about all things bass. Thanks Steve!
  6. Whenever I see one of these, it makes me immediately think of Henry 'Magic Thumb' Thomas and Rockschool. Simpler times...
  7. Feel free to make me an offer - I might say yes! 😉
  8. Wow. Precisely this model and finish was my very first bass, bought second hand from a local music shop for the princely sum of £30 in 1975. The only difference with mine was a previous owner had taken out the neck pickup and put a huge Gibson mudbucker in its place. Bizarrely, I watched Get Carter in its entirety for the first time just last week, and I did wonder whether the bass in the bar scene was a Baldwin! Takes me back. GLWTS.
  9. Three of the four listings I currently have in the classified have disappeared from the 'Activity/My Activity Streams/Content I Started' list, which is how I usually find them to bump or edit them, but also can't even be found by searching the relevant forum. In each case I had to go through all the forum pages one by one to find them, but they didn't return to the Activity list even after being bumped.
  10. I owned that one too! It's quite a few years ago, but I think it came via Bernie who was probably the EBS distributor at the time of Marcus's visit. I only sold it because I moved up to a TD650. Great amps. GLWTS.
  11. ON HOLD For sale is a lovely 70's Ovation Magnum 1, in excellent condition. I've wanted one of these for years, having been a fan of Howard Devoto and Magazine in my youth and the brilliant, gurgling basslines of Barry Adamson. I finally found this one not long ago, but quickly came to the realisation that I'm not really Barry Adamson, Jah Wobble, Kim Gordon or Ross Vallory for that matter! So slightly grudgingly, I've decided to part with it. All fully functional (including the string mute) and even the case is in great nick for a 45+ year old bass. Unlike some examples of this bass that can weigh several tons, this one comes in at a very reasonable 4.5kg and sits on the knee or a strap beautifully. £1500 + UK shipping. Sorry, but I'm not looking for any trades.
  12. For sale is my Lakland 55-OS (Off Set body) in trans black with a maple board. I imported it myself from a Lakland dealer in the States earlier this year, as Lakland themselves didn't have any in stock at the time. I've yet to see any other examples of these on this side of the pond, and even though it's a cracking bass, I find myself still using my US-made 55-94 all the time, so I thought I should let this go while it's still shiny and new. It's never left the house, and apart from a tiny bit of finger swirl under the strings, it's in as-new condition. The pickups and configuration are similar to Lakland's Skyline 55-01: 2 x Bartolini Mk1 pickups and a Bartolini 3-band EQ, but with the addition of a three-way mid frequency select toggle switch. As usual the standard of build is excellent, with a lovely grain visible through the trans black finish. It's about average weight for a 5-string at 4.6kg. Price now £800 including UK shipping. Sorry, but I'm not looking for any trades.
  13. Extraordinary basses, I have a 1986 model. I might have considered another one (they're only going to increase in value, after all) but Boris's Brexit Bonus adds about another £900 to the price! ☹️ GLWTS.
  14. I was unaware of Betsy's oeuvre, and just fell down a rather weird YouTube S&M heavy metal rabbit hole. Thanks for that! I get the feeling that if the music business wasn't currently in the sh!tter, this particular piece of obscure memorabilia would have stayed in the bottom of the flightcase with the rest of the detritus...
  15. Fabulous cabs, and a steal at that price. I used them for years until I started having issues with my back, so I 'downsized' to two Proline 210's! GLWTS.
  16. I see that in addition to collection only, the seller has very helpfully give his location as 'UK'. Perhaps all you need to do is follow the trail of bloodless corpses...
  17. I imagine goths only deal in cash. Or blood.
  18. On reflection that's on the high side, but prices are rising. There have been a couple pop up around the 6K mark recently, but if it's not in the UK you'd need to add roughly 24% VAT and import duty to the price. Paul Herman at Wal has recently closed his order books for the foreseeable future, as he has so much work, waiting times have now risen to 4 years. That's probably boosted the second hand market.
  19. Regardless of its perceived rarity and value, if I was going to ask 10 grand for a bass, I'd give it a bit of a clean at the very least! Perhaps they're hoping someone will buy it as-is for the possibility of harvesting Steve Severin's DNA to make a clone... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265165598987
  20. All you're missing out on is a lack of versatility, IMHO. As a teenager in the late 70's I borrowed some money off my grandad which, along with a staff discount at the music shop where I worked, enabled me to buy a '73 Jetglo 4001 for the princely sum of £220. I played it through a splitter into a Marshall bass head and 4x12 (neck pickup) and a Hiwatt 100 and 4x12 (bridge pickup). It sounded like a huge feckin piano! It did that very well, but not much else, so once I discovered funk and soul, I moved it on. Pity I didn't keep it - it would be worth about 4 grand now...
  21. ALL SOLD! Ernie Ball Slinky Bass 5 Super Long Scale (2850) 45-65-85-105-130 gauge, in sealed packets. They're great strings, I just prefer a slightly lighter gauge. I've got 5 sets left - now only £20 a set, or £95 for the remaining 5, including UK postage.
  22. That’s a shame. I’ve worked with a few people over the years who thought it was more important to be “rock ‘n’ roll” than put time and effort into developing their musical skills. I’ve also known a number of incredibly talented performers whose abilities were destroyed or lives cut short by drink and drugs.
