It isn't necessary... but if you go and whack on some new strings a couple of weeks later then you'll need a new setup to match the new tension and neck/string interaction - even switching like for like requires a new setup. Rather that the shop being "opportunistic" (which to a point they are - it's a business after all) it actually saves you money from having to pay to set it up all over again. Of course if you plan on keeping the same strings for a long long time then it doesn't matter in the slightest. Interesting read this.
It never occurred to me that every new set of strings would require another set up. I seldom change strings as I like the sound of my Rotos when they've been on for a while, but I might just fire a set of flats on and never have to worry about changing the strings ever again
Yes, it's funny how when I want my old bass from home to have a set-up it's imperative for it to have new strings. Yet if I buy a bass from the shop and they do a set-up for me when I buy it, the old strings are perfectly good for a few more months. Funny that...
But is it actually neccessary? Or is it just to make a few extra quid? The reason I ask is because you said the shop had told you that a set up would be a waste of time without them. Is there a justification for it? I would have thought that a set up would be better with old strings on the basis that new strings will stretch and settle in, so a set up that suits a new set might not be right for the strings a month or two later.
The bass was an Ibanez EBS600, No real problems but a slight buzz at the 9th fret on the E string. I was a noob and didn't know what the problem was. So I took it into the Bishops Stortford shop and was simply told, it needs a setup, £75 please. I agreed and left it there. I got a phone call later suggesting a new set of strings; £25 more or the set up would be a waste of time.
Is it normal to be told you have to buy new strings when getting a set up? This was the last couple of times I had a bass set up, even though I told the tech that I didn't want them, and that I preferred my fat, old strings. This was in more than one shop, so I assumed it was standard practice, if a bit unusual because I always believed the bass should be set up to the owner's requirements. That's why I do my own set ups now, although I might have to get someone else to take a look at the truss on my P Bass.

1. Fender Precision 2. Fender '51 Precision RI with flats That's all I think I'd really want, I'm not overly fussy.

So just to confirm, this is nothing to do with free £20 notes for pianists?
I'm agonising whether or not to put covers on mine. I like the look of them, I like the fact that the pup cover allows me to play a bit closer to the bridge but it's the idea of drilling holes that puts me off.
Mine already has the holes, drilled by a previous owner, who did a horrible job of it. When one of the holes by the bridge was drilled it split the finish so there's a 5mm sized bit of the finish missing, so putting a cover back over the bridge would actually cover it up.

Can anyone identify this? Help needed!
Jono Bolton replied to FlatEric's topic in General Discussion
Never seen that before, what exactly is it for? Is there a similar product you can use? -
Also, pobrien_ie and yepmop are really making me want to get a set of covers for my Precision. A bridge cover at the very least.

I thought that valuation seemed a little bit off. Still, it looks like a nice bass, those love heart tuners absolutely kill me! -
Ibanez Roadster Fretless in Glasgow - £200!
Jono Bolton posted a topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Not on ebay, but I thought I'd stick this in here in case any other Basschatters fancied it. If I had the money I'd be all over it, and it's in the South Side so it's probably not too far from me either. Oh well! Is it a 335-Dot? A pal of mine has one, very nice wee guitar it is too, enjoy Bilbo!

Truss Rod - To Loosen Strings Or Not?
Jono Bolton replied to spongebob's topic in Repairs and Technical
How does this work for basses with headstock truss rod access? On both of mine the slot sits between the A and D strings, I can't get the Allen key in without loosening the strings off at least a wee bit. -
Can I hi-jack this thread slightly? If I adjust my truss rod, should I be able to see an immediate difference? I've been trying to sort out the action on my Jazz for the last few days as it's far too high for me, and when the saddles are lowered the action's high over the first 12 frets or so, but then choke beyond the 14th fret. It seems to me that the neck is bent too far forward, but adjusting the truss rod doesn't seem to be doing much. That said, I'm not even sure I'm actually turning it. Its got headstock end access, but the nut sits that far down in the recess that I can't see into it. When I put the allen key in, it feels like it's slotting into the nut, but turning it clockwise it feels like it's turning slightly and then slipping out of the nut. Is it something I'm doing wrong? As far as I know, the truss has never been adjusted in the 8 years I've had it, never been in for a set up or anything like that.
What did I just post?
Is it a video? I'm in work so I can't see videos on our work computers. If it's Darryl Jennifer related, good on you bro, I doff my cap to you!

No one's mention Darryl Jennifer of Bad Brains yet His bass playing is incredible, especially on The Big Takeover.

Squier Vintage Modified vs Classic Vibe
Jono Bolton replied to Jono Bolton's topic in General Discussion
No comparison. The VM are fine for the price. But they're budget instruments. The CV are far better quality -- not quite as good as an American standard but at least as good as a MIM for about half the cost.

From all of the previous discussion, the most important thing to remember for me personally, has been the remark that one can buy CVs unseen whilst the VMs must be tested before purchase. This is what prompted me to go for CVs, and I can't say I'm sorry. One is perfect, one has a badly routed pup hole that I don't care about, and the last one needed a turn of a screw to become perfect.
Cheers guys, that's the sort of response I was looking for. I've heard that both are good in their own right, but I was really wanting to know if there was much of a difference in quality between them. For the £50-odd jump in price, it looks like it's going to be the CV Telecaster, unless anyone knows which range the J Mascis Jazzmaster comes under? I believe the signature Squiers, like the Matt Freeman P, are more or less Classic Vibes. -
Squier Vintage Modified vs Classic Vibe
Jono Bolton replied to Jono Bolton's topic in General Discussion
Thats a good point about the offsets, and I'm not really sure about the jump in quality, ive played both VM and CV squiers and they've both been amazing. If you want something truly mad, take a look at the Fender Pawn Shop series!
I'm really not keen on the Pawn Shop range, like the VM instruments that have been "pre-modded", they're really not to my taste. I prefer the ones like the offsets and a couple of the Precisions that seem to be fairly faithful reproductions of standard models from yesteryear. I've not had an opportunity to play any of the guitars I'm looking at, I guess the best thing to do it to give them all a try and just go for the one that I like the best! -
Squier Vintage Modified vs Classic Vibe
Jono Bolton replied to Jono Bolton's topic in General Discussion
Looking at the Squier website, it seems that the CVs are styled on vintage instruments, whereas the VMs are supposed to be vintage styled instruments but "modded" (hence the name I guess! ) I think I was a bit confused because while I can see the modified aspect of things like the Strat with lipstick puckups and the Telecaster Bass Special, the Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs and the Precisions don't seem to really be modified in any way, they look like they'd fit better in the CV range. Is there much of a jump in quality between the two? -

What's the difference between the Squier Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe ranges? As far as I can tell, both ranges are loosely based around vintage instruments, but why the need for 2 ranges? Is it different materials, or place of manufacture? From the basses I've looked at the Classic Vibes seem to be a bit nicer than the VMs, but I ask mainly because I'm thinking about getting a new guitar, and I'm looking at the VM Jazzmaster (which seems to be a straight up copy), and the CV Tele, which is based around an early 50s model with the pine body. Can anyone shed some light on it?
Join/start a band. If you still don't want to play bass, take up another instrument.
I feel this may be part of the problem. Recently my mate (who has my amp currently) left the band he was in to join another one. I'd liked his band for ages, they're a hardcore band and it was exactly the type of music I wanted to play. Anyway, they said on Facebook that they were looking for a new bass player, and I messaged them as I was pals with the outgoing bass player and also the guitarist, I'd known them from uni and we'd been mates for nearly 9 years. Anyway, I got a message back from someone, presumably the singer, saying they were only going with people they knew. No blame attached to my mates, they'd obviously not been consulted because my bassist mate had mentioned that he was thinking of leaving and had asked if I'd be interested. I replied back saying that I knew 2 of the lads and had done for years, and never heard anything back. I don't know if this has anything to do with not wanting to play bass anymore, I guess on some level though it probably does. I've played in bands that I've not really enjoyed just purely for the sake of it, or to help out mates, but I know very few people who like the same type of music as I do, and those who do don't play instruments, so I'm a bit stuck.

Well, I'm not planning on getting rid of all my gear, just the P (maybe that wasn't clear). The Jazz was an 18th birthday present from my parents, so I'll always keep a hold of it, even though I hate the colour (sage metallic green - yuk!) and I prefer the look, sound and feel of a Precision. The amp I'm happy to have out on loan, I seldom use it so at least it's getting gigged regularly, and I'm helping out a mate who needs an amp, but can't afford one right now. I'm sure though that if I did get rid of the Precision I'd regret it, but a combination of this lack of interest in bass and a change of circumstances means that the bass is up for sale, although it may have had to go anyway. I haven't totally fallen out of love with the bass, I still come on here every day and I love looking at other people's gear and talking about bass, but I just can't seem to bring myself to ever pick one up for more than a couple of minutes at a time.
