1.
I need to replace an old laptop in my home man cave / music study room, primary use is as a bass study aid. Needed to: Play music Play videos (youtube etc) View Sheet music Browse Basschat etc. What are others using, what would you recommend? Laptop?, PC? Tablet?, iPad?
If you want to plug the bass into the tablet, Apple seems to be the only manufacturer that makes a good job of that. If the bass is going through an external amp, with line in for the computer, then an android tablet would be fine. I've just bought an Advent Vega Note from Currys for £135. It's not an HD screen, not that I can tell the difference, but it'll do all the things you've listed, so long as there's wifi. It's got 16gb internal storage and you can add a 32gb micro SD card.
2. Stingray, Precision, what next? Ripper. Obviously
3. There's an interesting difference between growing up in the 50s/60s and growing up in the 80s/90s. I liked a lot of the music my parents liked, but they liked almost none of the music I discovered for myself. However, my kids like most of "my" music and I like most of theirs. In fact I rely on them to find me new stuff to listen to. We disagree over Frank Zappa (mine) and Korn (theirs).
4. I've filmed our band on a Canon Ixus 860 (digital compact) and the bass came out very well. I did extract the audio and tart it up a bit in Audacity. I think it was mainly to add compression, but I might have enhanced the bass a bit.
5. My father liked a fairly wide mix of music, bearing in mind he grew up in the dance band era: Bing Crosby, Guy Lombardo, Django Reinhart, Stéphane Grappelli, Fats Waller, Gershwin, trad jazz bands like Terry Lightfoot and Chris Barber. He had a Pye Golden Guinea LP which one side had "Rhapsody in Blue", and on the other side "Symphony for Blues", by Joseph Kuhn. I found out later that Kuhn was a record company arranger and had disappeared into obscurity. Now I've found the recording on Youtube. It still makes hairs stand up on the back of my neck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE2Sm8gbLoI
6. I went on a Rock Walking Tour in New York. The guide was a fanatical Ramones fan and was quite upset that I didn't get them at all. To me they sound like The Searchers. Fortunately there's a lot more on the tour that I was interested in. If anyone's visiting NYC I recommend it. Link
7. If you don't mind hollow body, Epiphone Jack Casady or DeArmond Starfire (if you can find one).
8. It's always g
worthy of being printed off in huge font and stuck to the walls of every rehearsal studio in the country Additionally, no-one wants to hear the drummer see if he can get that Joey Jordison fill bob on while waiting for the guitarists to find "that" sound- "it's in there somewhere, or at least it was when I practiced at home yesterday"
On the other hand, it's always good to warm up for the second set by playing along with the interval music. Especially if it's a tune you don't really know.
9.
We've started doing this one too. Many people only know the second half (the F1 theme) and look a bit confused during the first half. Then the penny drops
And it's the easiest bassline, but they react like you're some kind of god.
10. Nice to know Gumtree isn't any better than eBay after all.
11. Does it say anything useful on the label inside?
12. Just bought a Yamaha Pocketrak recorder from Chris. Posted very fast and in great condition at a reasonable price. Can't ask more than that.
13. From my past, an elderly 2365b
14. I bought a Behringer feedback destroyer and it was hopeless, so it clearly depends what you buy. I've had other Behringer stuff that was ok. I've now got a DBX 2-channel 32-band EQ and a spectrum analyser app on my phone, which tells me which frequencies to kill.
15. I heard Lightning Bolt on the British Airways ad. I thought it might be some recent Dylan track, so investigated and then bought the album. I think it's good, there's even some very early Paul Simon in some of the guitar.
16. If the elephant ear on the tuner is loose, you could try super glue. It's held on one of my Rippers for several years.
17. The Kerrang one is ridiculous. "The Effects of Hurricane Andrew in the Bahamas" "National Register of Historic Place Listings in Medina County, Ohio" "The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety" I suppose there wouldn't be too many other bands with those. Edit: the Vague Anxiety one turns out to be an album title, by japanese math rock band Toe. Whatever Math Rock is.
18. I've done bridges in coke. It works, leave to soak for an hour or so and use an old toothbrush to get the muck off. Don't lose the little grub screws. Crackly jack socket might be dirt, in which case clean the contacts with spirit on a cloth. Or it could be the wires need resoldering. You might be better just buying a new one, I don't think there's much vintage value in a jack socket. By the way, are you sure it's the socket, not the pots? It would be worth giving them a squirt of Servisol anyway, after all that time unused.
19.
http://www.bandnamemaker.com/ You cant lose!
With no optional seed word, my list included Polythene #45 And The Sodium Sixth Crotch Disabled Step-sister And The Gangster
20. I wrecked an SX P. I didn't like the orange varnish on the neck, and tried to remove it with chemicals. The varnish came off, but left the wood a dirty brown, with dark streaks in the grain. So I took the frets off in the hope I could sand it clean. But sanding didn't help, and I couldn't get several of the frets back. In the end Rich (Ou7shined) bought the neck off me, worked some magic and made a nice new bass, so it wasn't entirely wasted, but that was my last attempt at refinishing anything.
21. My listening habits have entirely changed since the 1970s, when I would regularly sit down specifically to listen to music. Now I never do that, when I listen to music it's either bass practice via mp3s on my laptop, exploring via Youtube, or listening during car journeys. I have a 32gb SD card as additional storage on my phone and that serves as my travelling mp3 player. For that reason, I wouldn't want a phone that didn't have extendable storage. I can't explain why my listening has changed, and I wouldn't say it's a good thing, it's just the way it is. But then, even in the 70s I was never serious about hifi to anything like the level that some people are. I can't explain that either, my ears just seem unable to detect differences that really bother someone else.
