Call me a philistine but I was not and am not trying to develop my 'own voice'. I am just trying to play the songs.
nothin wrong with this. -

@ nige: I like kits version much better than the original and your cover also is outstanding. I don'tknow the original, so can't tell about your personal performance. -
Only if you give a flying f*** about what other people think of your music or have a desperate need for people to tell you how wonderful you are. I'd say the highest goal in music is to create something that you yourself are happy with. If it ends up connecting with other people then that's just a bonus.
I believe you didn't get my point. it is not about the messenger, his ego or his ability but about direct delivery. if you don't have to say something, you are not an artist anyway. and you can never deliver directly if you are not happy with what do do. -

of course music is about people. what would music be if nobody would listen, write or play it? aside great compositions/writings which kind of conserve emotions it always is the performer/artist/musician who might touch people directly, be it co-performers or audience. and this is where the music starts to live... -
yes i can. i think people who play any instrument have different goals, as to what they want to achieve. im in no way saying any approach or attitude towards music/bass is better than the other, its subjective and personal. but my personal feeling is that music or expression of music is something that should communicate. how well you communicate is up to the individual..
ah, I see. but doesn't take this us back to the OP question? as nige said then what and how is communicated with/through music? as in a language isn't the dialect and choice of words, tone and pronounciation a mirror of your own personality? shouldn't we try to communicate then as precise and touching as possible to transport the expression of a piece or note? of course anybody can be happy just to play a bit, but isn't the highest goal in playing music to project the content/expression directly into the listeners hearts? I believe you have to have an own voice to be able to do this. -
I have low goals, making it to the end of the chorus is good, helping the whole band get there would be even better, and the best compliment would not be about 'original unique voice' (I would laugh to be told that) but something like 'great timing, lovely sound and held the whole band together!'.
isn't this the essential condition for a bassplayer to develop an own voice? I mean you can only become very good and unique if you know the basics, don't you? and since we are talking about playing bass, it is not about scalebusting and speed... -
i get the feeling that different people want different things from the bass.
can you please explain what you want to say with this, andrew? -

as a non native speaker I understand personality in this context as "own voice" since I am a personality playing an instrument. for me finding the own voice on an instrument is the highest goal to reach, and the best compliment I'd like to receive is the one about the original unique voice about me playing on an instrument. I'm on the hunt for this since 30 years and finally start to get closer. -
I'd be careful with a fender, there is something in the laquer that seems to change the dna..... but seriously I 'd also recommend a mustang or the bronco. as an alternative, how about a kala-u-bass?

Why do you want to know what gear your heroes use?
krysh replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I don't have any heroes. -
my gp lightstone twister (2-channel tube preamp - silver box at the bottom of the bass) it is essential in my setup and the 1st ever made.
Sounds really interesting ... Would like to hear the end result, or even rough mixes or rehearsal 'tapes'.
will do, but we are just starting. working on the 1st 2 originals each in their own studios right now sharing files. it will take at least 4 months until we will be stage ready I guess.

after my jazz trio has split up last week, I spent the whole day with finding/programming sounds on the different boards/pedals and figuring out how to use bass (and bass synth), guitar and vox to work with the looper for my next bandproject where we will be 2 guitarists/bassplayers sharing jobs and a drummer, playing some urban grooverock. man, still a long way to go!

hmm, dificult to answer, but I was told I have some. as Nigel I love to be on stage. there is almost no place I feel more home than a stage and the last time I had stagefright I can't even remember. but maybe judge yourself from the last available video of me playing bass in one of my ex-bands:

and another great one from shep again. thanks man!
For me it's a compulsion, I don't have a choice. But there is also the vanity
I'm with Nigel. I don't know where it comes from, but if I don't play music -best in front of an audience- I get sick after a while... on the other hand I also get sick because of most musos, too... so it must be a disease then.

I like him and this seems to be one of his Carvin signature basses. edit: or his gibson bunny brunel signature.
... All cables will last if you look after them. Most people don't look after them which is why they have to be replaced so often.
this. I still have some Klotz cables from the mid 80's and a Horizon from the late 80's that are reserve now and work perfectly.

welcome yvette50! unfortunately there is nothing like "the best equipment to get". there is good or not so good gear, expensive or cheap gear, heavy and lightweight gear, but all depends on what your purpose is and what your ear tells you. enjoy the board.
