1. tried a lot over 30 years. ended up with these or the hercules alternative: http://www.thomann.de/gb/km_17670_guitarstand_memphis_pro.htm
2. nothing is forever, but the 5 I own should do.... -seibass jazz 5 -bitsa esp/shuker jb -guild pilot fl -guild starfire 1 -eko b4 fl
3. get an 80ies EKO Bass, cheap and great - best bang for the buck ever.
4.
Hm, Hamburg is not that far from Groningen. Can you suggest some places where a heavy rock band is welcome? Then I could try to arrange a gig (or two ) at your home town. Would be nice!
try these to begin...
5. for me the best amp ever is the one that is working flawlessly on the gig I play. but regarding sound it is the ones I own: -pre-hiwatt sound city 200 custom built -epifani ul-502 -gp lightstone twister tube pre with acoustic image focus sa or lender custom tube power amp.
6.
Too big a question for too small a wallet and too short a lifetime. I'm only playing bass for around 35 years now. Wanted to try so much more but not everything was within reach. Where others want the signal to be compressed, for me the bigger the dynamic range the better. I wanna be able to hear what the fingers are doing. Walter Woods is a serious contestor. GML2020 through a Crown XTi2 would be pretty amazing... Ended up with Jule Monique and Bergantino IP112er, which combination leaves all others (Trace Elliot, Ampeg, Acoustic Image, Genz Benz etc.etc) far behind:
wow, I'd like to hear this.
7.
I always think of that cab setup as the 'surprised' MB rig...
why? would never have thought to buy it...
8. on the most small venues and pubs I played the monitoring was complete crap. so I rely on my small and light 1X12" rig for monitoring. as with modelling the only "modeling"-amp that would suit my taste in soundquality would be a kemper but I never tried one live. the soundquality to my ears is why I have a custom guitar amp built and have only very rare or custom gear. for bass a DI would and did work for me well a few times but for guitar I couldn't stand any modeler I tried until I heard the kemper- - but still for me nothing beats a real tube amp for "my" sound.
9. just got the cance to listen to your generous free download shep and must say I like it a lot. great sounds, ambiences and feel. congrats, keep it up and THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC!
10. wot new fashion is this, changing strings? I always buy a new bass if a string breaks. didn't happen for years though.
11. when I started playing bass again (after my 1st year in 1982 before I changed to guitar - also here is the 1st thing: my mates started a band and only playing bass was left available) in 2004 the main (2nd) reason was that a mate of mine who was playing bass in our project became sick and couldn't play anymore. so I took the bass for working on songs myself. the 3rd reason was that I became tired of playing with bad bassplayers when I joined open mikes. also I discovered that as a bass player you could play much more often there so I really started to rehearse and got some small jobs, too. so basically it was more a need than an inspiration.
12.
This seems to be quite common. I wonder if there's something about regular posting on basschat that makes you... ...makes you... ...uh... ...y'know.... ....
disappear and reintegrate into a parallel universe?
13. to be honest, I can't remember anymore.
14.
...don't believe you...prove it
check the pics on my website. edit, anyway here it is:
15.
Have you picked that scratch plate to match your carpet?
yep, and the straps and one of my amps.
16. my frankenjazz: -around 1985 finished and unused esp swamp ash body I got as a present -2008 shuker neck with hipshot ultralites bought from here -nordstrand nj4se bought from here -audere preamp bought from a german board. -pickguard from the bay -unknown bridge my luthier had lying around killer tone and playability. and no, it's not for sale.
17. I don't know If I can answer with yes, since I never felt the need to add a second one to my german custom made S.A.D. 1x12" cab that I got 2 years ago. it sounds perfect as a monitor or stand alone for up to 100 people and for bigger venues there always is additional monitoring and the subs of the pa... I just love the direct tightness even on the low B and don't miss any subbass on stage at all.
18. this was a very hard decision again. congrats to all participans, you all did a fantastic job. but I made my choice now.
19. thanks shep, this was really great. The pedal maufacturer interviews don't give me so much, but this was a great insight ni the live USE of fx and especially of the GR-55 that I'm also playing around with. I only wish there would have been a little more deeper insights into his patches and toneshaping.
20.
In Cold Sweat is a fabulous book! Zappa's MAJNH is a fabulous album! I just ordered Ghosts and Ballyhoo: Memoirs of a Failed LA Music Journalist, the book he wrote spawned by the TB thread and TB members imploring him to make book out of all the stories.
me. these. 2.
21. thanks for posting this nige. i'm on page 22 of the 2nd thread now. ordered a cd and a book. this threads are magic.
