2.
The basses are good but a good player will sound great without one and a bad player will still sound bad with one. They are irrelevant.
Very true. I now own a nice bass and I still stink!

wow, what a shock. he always felt like the heart and soul of this forum. he'll be genuinely missed by everyone here.
4. I can play like that... sitting down I mean...
5. Played a quietish pub on Friday then a great wedding gig on the Saturday. Afterwards we all sat down and agreed that we would try to concentrate on weddings and parties from now on and just do one pub gig a month. Feels like an important moment.
6. I'm not a big Stevie Wonder fan and (having just checked) don't have a a single track of his on my iTunes but I knew almost every song he played. I enjoyed the performance much more than I expected. A pretty spot-on way to end the festival.
7. I now have my full complement of basses and it would be economically and matrimonially very bad to add to that BUT... I have major GAS for the new Fret-King Ventura Super 80 Bass. And I haven't even tried one...
8. Stuart Clayton is in Barnstaple and is both an excellent bassist and tutor. If you're in NE Cornwall that might be viable.
9. Yes, we'll be there on Saturday, 4:45 to 5:30. Trying to work out our set list at the moment. Much more of a 'rawk' audience than usual for us so I'll try to pick accordingly!

I preferred the sound of the AE but its been over a year now and I can't remember why exactly! The weight factor was another big plus as far as I'm concerned. Gigged it every weekend for about 14 months now without any problem at all. In fact I added a second AE112 about 6 months ago to give me a really versatile, compact set up. Like Alan says, have a trip to Bass Direct and try them side by side - take your own amp though.
11. Thanks for suggesting the Alive Network. I found this form incredibly useful.
12. I had a similar problem with my custom build. Very happy with the luthier, great communication etc. It looked fantastic, it played superbly and sounded sweet acoustically but when I plugged it in it was just wrong. Very low output and the tone was weak and way too trebly. Took it back and had it re-wired and re-checked (no charge of course). A bit better but when I got it home I quickly decided that no, this was not right. Back we go and this time we get a breakthrough. Long conversation between luthier and pickup manufacturer reveals a mutual misunderstanding around the wiring. 5 minute fix and now, finally, I have a bass that I love. Which is a very longwinded way of saying, check your pickups and the wiring! Hope you find a solution. If you like how it looks and how it plays, someone will be able to help you sort out the sound. elom
13. An interesting thread this because I've been thinking about changing my bedroom combo for some time. When I took up bass again I just looked around for the cheapest thing that I could find and got a Peavey Max 126. Diddy little 10W thing but I tend to practice fairly quietly anyway. It's served me fine for the past 4 years, no complaints. But then I noticed in my Bass Direct email that PJB have a new small combo on the market, The Cub. Looks very nice, great spec and immediately GAS starts to rise. I could afford it if I wanted. A sensible person would point out these 4 things:

You've never heard the thing
It's too underpowered to gig and it's too overpowered for bedroom practicing
There really is nothing wrong with what you've got
It costs £400 - think what else you could do with £400...
At the moment the sensible person is winning...
14. I think this is stunning. Love the Les Paul shape and that cherryburst is lush. I have an LP style bass already so I wont be buying but very nice all the same!
15. Very strange one last night. We'd played there once before (estate pub) and it was really quiet. This time it was a wet and miserable night, they'd put up none of the posters I'd sent and hadn't even chalked our name on the board outside - nothing. And the result? There was nobody there. Single digit punters in the other room, none in the room where we were playing. Landlord says he can't pay us the full amount but offered us half and said that we don't need to play and could keep the cash. As it happens we decided that for half the cash he could have half a gig. So we played one set to almost nobody, packed up and went home. On the plus side we used it as a chance to play through older songs that we've not played live for a while. We decided to treat it as a paid rehearsal and on that basis it wasn't too bad! Certainly the strangest gig we've ever done. Never mind, one of our better venues next week.
16. In terms of new, it's the law of diminishing returns. By that I mean that the cost per percentage improvement increases because those improvements become more difficult to achieve. So the best value, which I take to mean quality divided by cost is at the budget end of the market. For me personally this cheap Harley Benton has been the best value bass I've ever had. Because it's cheap it sits in the corner of the living room and it doesn't matter if the kids play with it etc. And because it's just lying there it gets picked up and played a lot. Quality is more than ok and I'm quite fond of the thing! I've also got a pretty expensive bass which I love and is superb, but it's not better value than my HB. elom
17. Selling my Westone Thunder 2 (that my Dad bought me for my 15th birthday), so that I could get the money to take a girl on holiday. I then gave up playing because I was too mature and sensible for such childish things. I was 20 and didn't pick up a bass again until I was 37. When I started playing in a band again I really realised what I had missed. That's a big regret. Plus I reckon that if I had still been playing I wouldn't have been such a boring old fart throughout my 20s. Last year I found my bass for sale on ebay and bought it back. The only scratch on it was one that I had put there 20 years previously. Oh and I'm still with the girl.
18. I was contacted yesterday by a friend of mine who is putting together a side project. Unfortunately I just don't have any time available so have had to pass but am happy to post this here to see if one of you guys is interested. As I said it's a side project from his main band so probably only going to be gigging once or twice a month. It's Exeter based and, erm, that's probably about as much as I know! If you're interested send me a PM and I'll pass it on. A suggested song list is pasted below: Garbage - Cherry Lips / When I grow up Foo Fighters - Monkey Wrench Green Day - When I Come Around / Warning Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows System of a Down - Aerials / Chop Suey Faith No More - Epic Pendulum - Propane Nightmares Muse - Time is Running Out / Hysteria / Plug in Baby Placebo - Nancy Boy Therapy - Screamager Belly - Feed the Trees Lily Allen - f*** You / Not fair Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun Reef - Place Your Hands Terrorvision - Oblivion Fratellis - Baby Fratelli Selecter - On My Radio No Doubt Hole Alanis Morrisette L7 King of the Curb by Echobelly Cramps Bikini Girls with Machine Guns What's inside a Girl. NO AC/DC who's got a match - biffy clyro Eagles of Death Metal In the Meantime by Spacehog
19. There's a few of us Devonish folk on here. Which pub did you play? We've played most of them on the local circuit so let me know if you want a couple of leads.
20. Someone kindly bought me Xtreme Bass by Stuart Clayton at Xmas. Unfortunately they didn't ask me first otherwise I would have told them that I don't need a beginners book (or perhaps they have heard me and thought otherwise! ) It is mint and unopened. If you PM me your address I'll send it to you. No charge, just think of it as a welcome to bass playing.
21. I really like BGM but I get annoyed at the fact that every bass they review is given 4 or 5 stars. I have a Hohner B2A for travelling and it's great. It also doubles up as my back-up bass, taking up hardly any space at all!
22.
15% commission i believe
Mansons charge 20% so that's a very fair rate. Have dealt with Mark 3 times and can't fault his service.
