1. Hi all, not been around for a while... So I have this old, cheap acoustic bass which just sits in the corner of the living room and occasionally gets picked up for a quick 5 minutes. It's still got the same strings on it that it came with when I bought it from Thomann over a decade ago. Until today. I was putting a fresh set of strings on my main bass (which I do every 6 months) and thought that as there was a bit of life left in the old ones I would put them onto the acoustic. That's when the fun started. I thought it would be pretty simple but I was wrong. Everything seems to be going okay but when I tighten up the strings the bridge pins ping off and literally go flying across the room! I've given up now before I break something, either accidentally or through frustration... How am I supposed to get these damn pins to stay in? I must be missing something. Actually I have just thought of something as I am typing, is it the strings? Do I need special strings for an acoustic? The used ones that I have been trying to put on are D'Addario Pro Steels. Might it be a tension thing? Any help would be very welcome. It may be old, cheap and battered (much like myself) but I'd at least like to get it functional again!
2. This is my feeling exactly, how you play is only a part of the performance!
3. I have one of these. Was my main gigging bass for many years. Best neck I’ve ever played. These are super rare now, especially in the UK.
4. Literally blew a coating of dust off this case before opening this. Might be on the for sale Forum soon.
5. Hi folks Having a clear out and thought that rather than charity shop these I would offer them on here. Each free to a good home. The R&B and Sight-reading books both still have the CDs with them. All in excellent condition. I will pay for the P&P for you but if you wanted to chuck a couple of quid at the charity that I volunteer for that would be much appreciated. 6. A friend of mine posted this pic on Facebook recently and I thought it was worth sharing. Certainly unlike anything I've ever seen! Apparently it was made in 1973 by Phil Perry if that means anything to anyone.
7.
Orange Unsigned Act on C4, and yes it was quite entertaining - a televised battle of the bands edit: beaten to it, should have read the second page
Yes, I remember that well. I enjoyed it but I guess 'unknown' music is considered niche and certainly not for primetime ITV. Celebrity Karaoke though...
8. Sold, pending the usual formalities. I'll update the title when completed.
9. After 5 years it's time to say goodbye to my B2A, a victim of the 'one in, one out' bass policy in our house! So no trades sadly. You'll either love the looks or not, but for my money this is a great little bass. There are a couple of minor dings and scratches but none that are noticeable in play. Overall this is in very good condition. The action is nice and low, the sound rich and warm. In fact this has been one of my favourite basses to play and it might have been my main gigging bass had it been in a different style! Instead because it is so small and light I've taken it to hundreds of gigs as my backup - never to be used. It's the bass that I always took to band practice, because its so portable and sounds great. It's also great for travelling. I used to take this away on business occasionally and its a lot less obtrusive to travel with than a full size bass in a hard case! Spec (cut and pasted, so I assume its correct) Neck Type Maple, through-neck, headless, two octave Fingerboard Ebony on fretless, rosewood on fretted Body Type Maple, Steinberger shape Finish Red gloss body and neck Pickup(s) Twin EMG soapbar active pickups Controls Individual pick-up volumes, bass and treble cut and boost, active/passive selector switch with red LED I've always used the bass in passive mode, never used the active (not a fan) or the SLR output. I put a battery in for the first time today and it didn't seem to do anything so I've knocked a bit off the price. Comes in a good condition Warwick Rockbass gig bag and I'll through in a new set of Elite strings. I have sold and bought on BC before but it was donkey's years ago so no feedback thread etc. Happy to post this but if you can pick up from Devon then I'll knock a bit off. 10. The bass that you own but never play, that's the overpriced one.
11. Spoken to the guy. Seems nice enough, long chat about basses. Transferred cash via PayPal and so will hope to see my new bass in a couple of days. First new bass related purchase for 4 years so I have been good! Yes Donnyboy, it was indeed red and 300 miles away - a Nate Mendel P Bass winging its way from Norfolk to Devon
12. My daughter has just given up the clarinet after 3 years so I have a decent quality starter/intermediate instrument with upgraded mouthpiece etc sitting around doing nothing. It's a Boosey & Hawkes. Would consider selling if you're interested PM me.
13. Thanks guys, going to talk with the seller later tonight. Also the advice on PayPal was spot on, as long as I mark the money transfer as payment for goods then I am covered by their Buyer Protection. So that's the line I'm going to go down. There is 3.4% charge for the seller but I don't mind paying that if I need to.
14. There's a guy selling a bass on gumtree. We've exchanged a couple of texts and all seems good. I have no reason to doubt his authenticity (nor he mine). However the bass is on the other side of the country so going to pick it up is not an option. I want to do the deal but am wondering how to make this happen without having to put a huge amount of trust in a total stranger with no comeback if it all goes pear-shaped. I suppose I could ask him to list it on ebay with a BIN price so that I can buy via Paypal with some assurance but I expect he'd rather avoid the extra ebay charges that go with that. I might ask anyway. Anyone got any advice? thanks, elom
15. Just realised that this is the band that our very own Captain_Bass used to be in. Hope his basses survived intact! I suppose as their bass player was in on it then it's all okay and he can do what he likes with his instruments but it just seems like wanton twattishness to me.
16. Good on ya! Always good to have some new people to play with. I've just joined a band too after a couple of years out of the game. Rehearsal no 3 was today and its a lot of fun so far.
17. Not sure how I'd react if my bandmates decided to do this to one of my basses. https://www.facebook...&type=2 The band is New Device
18. Damn, I thought it was 'Drug A Mummer' day. Anyone want a comatose Morris Man?
19. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 1 post to view.
20. Glad I asked now, thanks for the advice. Will try to find an alternative.
21. I'd always played fingerstyle but I've recently joined a grunge band and playing with a pick just gives me a tone and attack that seems to fit the music better. It's taken longer than I thought but I'm now getting comfortable with it. Actually I really ought to experiment with some different picks rather than just the same one that has been sat in my case for donkey's!
22. Well it looks as if our spare room is about to have a 'makeover' and I need to move out a couple of my basses that don't get played much. There isn;t really anywhere in the house for them to go other than the loft. Will they be okay up there? I'm guessing that the temperature fluctuations will be okay - it's not like they're going in the shed! I'm just looking for a bit of reassurance or tips. They'll be in hard cases. Thanks elom
23. This thread made me go and grab my own basses - I guess they are pretty 80s!
24.
Found this: http://basschat.co.u...__1#entry153354
Thanks, that was the post that I had been looking for! And GonzoBass was the Hawaiian (funny how you remember details like that. from a post 4 years ago!)
