Yes - a great review... I've got an original early 70's one & it is awesome - such a huge FAT BASS sound... But these Squires look great - & how can you possibly go wrong for a couple of hundred squid? Especially as the original ones are starting to fetch 10 times that.... Well done Fender!

And if you want a case for one... This is a perfect fit - just drop the foam packaging that it arrives in straight into this case! Job done. http://profilmgear.com/Items/12601
Has anyone here got or used one..?? [Avalon] I am thinking of getting one for recording purposes and Thomman seem to be the cheapest by a mile. Read plenty of reviews , which all great... but a bit of hands on experiance in use would be good. Garry
I've got one and it is fantastic. And I've tried every DI box you can think of - all of 'em. But this is in a different class. I can see now why this has become THE industry standard DI box for many of the top 'name' bass players & big recording studios. If you want to hear exactly what your bass sounds like - every last detail of the tone - with no colour (or noise) from the DI box itself then get one of these. You will not be disappointed. For some people it will be too much to take to gigs (it's a big, heavy box!) - but if you just want the best then this is it. And for recording? Wow. It will even take a speaker input (up to 400W). I did also look at getting a REDDI - but they are crazy, crazy money(!) & never had even a sniff of one 2nd hand + the Avalon is much more useful for a variety of recording scenarios. I paid £275 for this on eBay (UK) - it's mint/good as new (bought from a top pro session guitarist). They are VERY rare 2nd hand - that was a BIN price & had only been up for a short time (had an auto search saved) - so I didn't mess about. I had almost given up hope of finding one used & was about to drop £400 on a new one. But...they do have a switchable mains supply (this is pro kit!) - so you could buy one from US eBay & it would work here with no problem. But there tends to be a 'bun fight' for them on eBay from UK buyers. If you know someone in the US - get them to buy a 'ship to US only' one for you & I bet you could snag a bargain.

I had the same problem - but you don't need to roll back to an earlier version of OSX... You just need to run the 'prebind script' & it will be sorted. I am now running the very latest version of Pro Tools LE on OSX 10.4.10 on a MacPro Dual Core Xeon.

The first track I assume is a flatwound Precision, the second - I'm not so sure (semi?) would love to hear your ideas: http://ftpcryo.free.fr/carloz/Funky%20Soul...0Th%23BABBF.mp3 http://ftpcryo.free.fr/carloz/Funky%20Soul...0Number%209.mp3 Enjoy the niblets, the paul.
Ron Baker used a Fender Precision with heavy-gauge flatwounds, DI'd or through (it had to be of course) an Ampeg B-15. This seems to be all the rage at the moment - anything older than a year or two has now become 'vintage' - or 'rare'... And because the really valuable old Fenders are commanding high prices sellers like this guy seem to think their crappy bass surely must be worth thousands as well. Dream on muppet!
Can't go wrong with the Glolsch straplocks. The 500ml bottles cost about £1.50 in my local corner shop, so £3 gets you a set of straplocks and nearly 2 pints of drinky. I got a set of schallers years ago, but don't use them as the Grolsch ones are top. There's an old ashdown advert with Pino playing a sunburst fender, and what straplocks is he using? Here's a clue: Glug Glug Buurrrp! It's not just the rubber seals that you can recycle as well... glass
And another vote for Grolsch straplocks - these are used by loads of other pro players... especially good on vintage basses where you don't want to mess with the original strap buttons. A no-brainer!
This is 30miles from me. What do I do? What do I do? *flails arms zanily*
Do nothing...especially not buy it for £2K. In my humble opinion I think that bass is barely worth half what he's asking for it - if that. Why?

He's managed to break the truss rod (WTF?) - so the neck/fretboard has had to be repaired
The pickups /wiring aren't original
Sounds like there's been some re-routing to fit the EMGs & wiring
The bridge is replaced & then it's not even a real Badass bridge!
Someone's carved their name into the back of the headstock & this guy thinks 'great idea - I'll carve mine on top!'
Who knows what else has been messed with?
It looks in pretty poor condition & has been abused & chopped about rather than cared for & cherished
No ashtrays, or case

I think Stewart's asked the question we've all been thinking. If you had it repaired and could demonstrate it in action to a prospective buyer, surely you'd get more money for it? The problem is that, if they're anything like me, most people are probably thinking "I bet I'd take that to an amp tech and he'd say it's gonna cost me £500 to repair". If it's cheap to fix, it's surely a false economy on your part not to do so? Good lcuk Chris
+1
"Build number is 357973 as you can see, which will relate to 1972, Which is also known as the CBS era for Fender guitars" Huh?
I've not heard that period in Fender history descibed like that before - but I suppose he's quite correct... If pre-65/66 is seen as the 'pre-CBS' era - then 65/66 to 84 would be the 'CBS' era. And 85 to now(?) the 'post CBS' era!

£1,800 would be close to its top value I would think - though I personally don't like this one at all because the front is so badly faded, that you can't see any red remaining in the sunburst (this is pretty common on Fenders of this era & the reason why you have to be careful how you store vintage basses - leave them on a stand & sunlight/uv will continue to fade the colours & damage plastic parts). That really spoils the look of the bass for me. The missing fret would be easy to fix - as long as the binding isn't damaged too much. But if someone has been happy to keep using a bass (for who knows how long) with a fret missing then it says to me that they haven't cared for it very well - so there may be other problems waiting to surface? If it was me I'd pass on this one & look for a better early 70's Jazz instead. There's a much better one on eBay now from a seller in NYC. Just my 10p worth of opinion though!

The most expensive bass part ever...?
That's insane..... ! you could pick up a used custom shop 64 for that !
Oh yes - very insane! But it looks very much like it was bought by another dealer - so either he's thinking he can re-sell it for even more money(!) - or he's close to putting together an all original early 60's Jazz bass that needed this part to make it complete - or he could use it to convert a transition 3 pot version (with mutes), to a stack knob version - which would make that bass worth much more to a collector... -
Just think how much of bargain your bass was. There is no quarantee these will actually work either.
Yes - this really has brought it home! I knew an all original 1960 Jazz bass could fetch as much as £15K - but I didn't expect individual parts to generate such a 'feeding frenzy' on eBay. And you're absolutely right - the electrics could be unusable on that set... I recently got a really nice original 60's t-shell pickguard for the bass (& that was far from from cheap!) - so it will be very close to being all original. The restoration still has a bit to go - we're waiting for exactly the right vintage formulation nitro-cellulose varnish to arrive from the US. Then it will take a month (minimum) to dry properly. That will be torture!
