Hi Guys, I recently received this lovely bass from Mr. Russ but have found it's playing second fiddle to my 4 string basses. Try as i might I just have no need for the 5th string at the minute and have a custom 6 string Shuker (madness or what!) due shortly which will cover me for any B string work I need. Pics on Mr. Russ's thread (hope he doesn't mind me using them). http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...2&hl=roscoe Proper jazz string spacing (19mm at bridge but adjustable if required), wide assymetrical neck (very comfy) and the most flexible range of sounds from a passive bass that I've ever heard. To save on shipping I didn't take the case when I traded for the bass so it won't include a case (but I ship things extra secure!). Will consider trades, preferably with cash my way, but only for 4 string basses I'm afraid (would ideally like the 4 string version of this bass but I know they're hard to come by). No Warwicks or Lakland JOs I'm afraid - have excellent examples of each. Would prefer a straight sale if possible. I know things are tight at the minute but I'm after £700 plus shipping. If I don't get it then it'll just stay here until things improve. Cheers Ian *** On hold for Nathan. Should be leaving these shores tomorrow at the latest!
Hi I'm selling a Epifani UL310 which is in excelent cosmetic and working condition. I'm asking for 600 pounds. Also, I'm selling a Markbass LM II. It's only 5 months old and it is in excelent condition. It comes in original box with manual. I'm asking for 420 pounds. Both prices include shipping within UK. If you can come to collect them, I'll let them go for less. Of course you are very welcome to come and check the equipment. All the best, Jordan
PM'd you

I'd go as far as a bridge change and maybe a new set of pickups and electronics. As has been said, Yammies are decent basses so really it's up to you. Either of those upgrades could make the difference. Start with the cheapest though!
I know what you mean, but most decent venues will have monitors which the band will be able to hear you from anyway.
I must never have played a decent venue then! Do you just monitor yourself or do you do the whole band from the mixer? I might give monitoring myself a go at band practice next week just to see how it goes (I have a Johnson J-station and a set of bose tri-port in-ears that I could use just for the purposes of experimentation).

I'd love to go the in-ear monitoring route, but the rest of the band wouldn't be too keen I don't think. I couldn't really see me doing it on my own as it's just something else to carry as I'd still need an amp for them to hear me. They're all for 'quite on stage, let the PA do the work' but just won't go the whole hog... If it were up to me we'd be gigging with an electronic drum kit, 3 pods and in ears all the way!
We should start an IEM club... Why do people bother with rigs on stage, eh? ;0)
Hi Ped, I believe UB40's bass player (name escapes me right now) had something similar to the pleasure board built. Details are in a (fairly) recent BGM interview. Maybe cheaper than a pleasure board?
That thought has crossed my mind, it would have to be the right one, no Monarchs, but very maybe a Emperor or Emperor 2, I'd be champing at the bit if this one hadn't sold: Though from reading in recent threads regarding Fodera, they do seem to be way over-priced and not exactly living up to the hype, but ah well I'd have to play one for myself. I just wish there was a UK retailer with more stock of MTD and Fodera and other higher end brands like Ken Smith, and thus is also another reason why I'm really considering the 535, due to them not being all that common, it would probally be a long time before I saw one at a good price again.
That's been sold for a long time. That's flat out the best bass I've ever played. But then it'd have to be at that price!

I seriosly doubt you'll be dissappointed either way! For me I love Laklands and love jazz basses, so it'd be tough for me to decide between the two. As has been said before you'd have to do a side-by-side to really make your mind up...

Hey Ped, Did you get a chance to try this yet? Ian

I was thinking more along the lines of 'Higher Ground' and 'Superstition' myself!

So it would probably do Stevie Wonder type keyboard bass then?

It's like my old boss used to say "There's no point polishing a turd..." My point is, if you like the bass and plan on keeping it for a while then go ahead and mod it until your hearts content, but only if it's a worthwhile mod. If you're modding it trying to make it into something else you've seen/played/lusted after then you may be wasting your money needlessly. I spent over the odds tarting up an old Aria Pro II 5 string with a new bridge, Bart pickups, then EMG pickups and circuit. Spent way more than the bass cost me. In the end it wasn't much better than when it started. It's the bass I learned to play on, and it's never going anywhere, but it's still a plank after all the mods. For the money you're talking about spending you could sell the bass, add the extra and have something better (into Lakland Skyline territory there). This is all very subjective though. In the end it's your bass and nobody's going to call you a mug if you want to spoil it a little. I wouldn't class a change of strings as an upgrade though...

I recently had to learn this for my band. I wouldn't even attempt to learn this song note-for-note because it's ridiculously complex for a 4 chord wonder, IMHO. Simplify it. The punters won't know the difference. I personally hate the song so had no problem doing it my own way. But then I had 20 songs to learn that week and wanted to spend more time on the songs that needed more attention to sound passable with the band. I repeat the first 2 lines (of bass) of the song for the verses and stick with the basic root notes in the bridge and chorus. F/E/F/A/E/G then once round the chorus under the guitar solo. Still sounds quite busy. Just my tuppence worth. Learn it quick and move on to something you'll find more fulfilling...

The neck profiles are totally different. For a start the Sadowsky has 19mm string spacing. The 'ray would be nearer 17.5mm. I disposed of my 'Ray a few years back because the neck was too narrow. I'd say the Sadowsky neck is wider but flatter, although still quite chunky. If you're looking for a cheaper alternative to the Sadowsky I'd suggest a Lakland Skyline 5 string (a Joe Osborne would be my choice, although I've never tried the DJ model - it's supposed to be very good...)
