I knew a Carl in Heidelberg, Germany. He was a good chap. He was not, however, German and was therefore not called Karl. He was a South African and his name was in fact spelled Carel, but as he lived in London and people kept calling him Carol, he modified it to Carl.

I'm clearly missing the point. I though it was because of the jamas 😦

I was lucky enough to see the great Al Di Meola last weekend in Leverkusen. His playing is just mind-blowing and he had a terrific band (accordion/piano/perc), virtuosi all.

I saw him supporting Bob Marley and the Wailers in Dublin in 1980. I know this seems unlikely and I was mistrusting my memory, so I looked it up and found this on Rootfire. An extract ... "The main support act The Average White Band was cancelled, and this caused a lot of confusion outside the gig as the promoters were advising customers when they entered the grounds, offering refunds of the £7 admission charge. No takers, so it was obvious everyone was there to see Bob. A crowd who had gathered outside the event were let in for free halfway through the concert. The replacement support act was Ronnie Lane and Friends, who did a short set. Ronnie was at this time suffering from MS."

I can fully understand this. I am becoming even clumsier in my old age. Not long ago I lost control of some small thing I was holding and made a little dent in my Ovation 6-string. I could have cried. The guitar is 25 years old .... I have only 1 bass, an acoustic Ibanez, and AFAIK it remains undinged. The inevitable awaits 😨

It is well known (well, claimed by some) that ABs are not loud enough (broadly speaking) and require reinforcement. You will still, therefore, require a loud-maker. Also they tend to feed back a bit so you need a rubbery feedback-discourager thing to put in the hole on the top ... maybe an anti-feedbacker pedal, too.

I saw the Dandy Warhols supporting Bowie in Frankfurt in (about) 2002. Their sound, overall, was poor. When Bowie came on, the sound was near perfect. As an aside, I once had a chat with a chap who did sound for Juluka when they were supporting Men at Work in Ozzie. The MaW crew told him that, were he to touch the desk, they would break his arms ...

He is indeed a master. As you can see in the pic, there were 2 other guitarists (whose names I don't know, I'm afraid) and they played some great 3-part harmonies. This was a small gig in the studio car park, so pretty up close and personal.

I have one, an Ibanez acoustic. I am, however, not a bass player ... I do have 4 guitars and a uke, though 🙂

Of my 5 guitars, 3 were given to me by my wife (a new Tele, a new Ibanez acoustic bass and an old classical guitar). My ex-wife gave me my other electric, a Casio MIDI guitar which is a beauty. I bought my Ovation myself in the 90s. Seem to have outed myself as a gungy six-string fancier, there 😞

The brilliant Mokoomba from the country of my youth. I was lucky enough to see them at an open air gig at the Chocolate Museum in Cologne last year. Enjoy ... BTW for full disclosure this is not the Cologne gig but something I found on the Tube from a few years ago.

I love this one. Despite being sort of a ska and reggae lover I had never heard it until about a year ago when it came on the radio here in Germany ...

Great song. I was just starting high school when I first heard this and it's a real reminder of the 70s. I've even been playing it on the old 6-string recently (don't shoot me, please).

Ashamed as I am to admit to this*, it was Johnny Winter. *not because it was Johnny, but because it was so long ago 😧

On a happier note, an old friend of mine uses one (a Voyage-Air) professionally in the States and is very happy with it. So I guess they vary a bit.

A few bands I like who don't (or who rarely) sing in English: Mokoomba - Tonga (Zimbabwe) Die Toten Hosen - German Fokofpolisiekar - Afrikaans I understand German and Afrikaans but not a word of Tonga.
