NyobBD - '77 / '78 P bass (natural / maple) knowledge required please
andydye replied to andydye's topic in Bass Guitars
now for the expert input please folks...there are numbers on things and I'm aware they mean things but I'd like someone who knows stuff to have a gander and give me an opinion...it looks to me like they might be '74 pups but with '79 pots? is that right or have I the wrong end of the stick...? the body also looks like it was intended to be natural if that stamp in the cavity is to be believed? is that consistent with a genuine fender body?
It's an ubercool bass. Happy to have been of assistance! P
you were amazingly helpful, many many thanks again matey!
Hope it's as good as it looks
it sure looks mighty good doesn't it
That`s a beaut Andy. The weight of 70s Fenders can vary immensely - I had a 77 Precision which was 10.5lbs, a mate of mine has a 77 in exactly the same colour scheme, everything the same, except his weighed 13lbs. Looks like you`ve ended up with a fairly manageable one, am sure you`re going to enjoy it.
it actually weighs a tad less than my 2010 which is itself just under 4kg so it's very lightweight for a p, especially a 70's one!
Very nice! Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!
thanks all for the kind words, it's a thing of beauty indeed! now for the 'finding out about it by taking it to bits and putting it back together again' -
Oh dear - I will need a new keyboard now.
eeeeeewww
Looks super... I wonder if it will have that 'smell'
it does have a rather wonderful smell to the case, the bass itself has an old smoke kind of smell too, now slightly masked by guitar polish
My keyboard does now . Very nice bass

Yes - someone really liked first position judging by that wear on the necks lower edge
the wear is rather focussed isn't it -
New year of birth Bass Day Yes, I know the mid/late seventies weren't a great time for Fender and, yes, I know that precisely dating instruments from that period is 'difficult', but, it says S7 and 5 of other numbers in the serial number on the headstock so I'm choosing to believe it's a '77 (even if it could well be from any time in 77 or 78)! Natural finish (not original) Ash body showing some wear, maple fingerboard, frets with a bit of life left in them, some obvious lacquer wear on the fingerboard, original ashtrays, case (+ keys), looks good, neck feels a tad deeper than my 2010 USA std p and the whole thing feels really light...I thought these were meant to be heavyweights (usually!). I'll weigh it when I get home as am really curious to see what it weighs, I should also probably strip it right down to see what's under the hood too. Huge thanks to NancyJohnson (and Mrs Johnson) for collecting it from the seller and packaging it up for shipping to me, Mrs Johnson stayed in especially waiting for the courier for me! both went above and beyond the call of duty for which I am hugely grateful!!! Teaser pic before I get it home and do a proper job on it 20140709_145852 by andydye, on Flickr These are the sellers pics and this link 'might' work...
So it's the age old simple answer that... Electrics make the biggest difference...all else is aesthetics, playing pleasure and mythos

So it would seem! The runaway winner was the only bass with non-standard pickups. Very interesting. Well done to all concerned for organising this, quite a surprising result I'd say..!
I like mythos and aesthetics and I love 'playing pleasure'
Too many of these ACGs up for sale at the moment - I can't believe they're not being snapped up - you'd be pushed to get this quality of bass for this amount of money normally... Have a bump..
I was playing it today when gui101 came to collect my/his ead 212 and I remembered why I loved it, sounds and feels utterly superb, the neck carve is perfect for me. gonna sleep on it cos I might withdraw it in the hope I'll be able to use it again at some point -
[s]For sale my sft overdrive pedal, does a surprisingly authentic sounding grindy valve amp emulation, I've had my fun with it and now have an all valve rig to grind for me Just given it a thorough check over and it's in minty fresh condition as is the box Local collection from Sheffield is of course welcome, also quite happy to post. Trades I'd be looking for would be an analog delay (maxon or mxr) or tremolo pedal with appropriate cash adjustment.[/s]
cool! Any effects built in?
no mate, just the pups making it sound sweet p90 at the neck and a paf at the bridge -
Not happy.......NOT happy.....I'm trying to thin the herd and have just sold one bass today! Last thing I really needed was this to come along....... Whats the body thickness? Is it fitted with recessed straplocks? Does it come with a hard case? Does it come with a free, no-quibble excuse for my wife?
I haven't got anything remotely similar dear, it does a completely different sonic job from my other 357 basses and it'd be perfect for *** (insert song name)...?
Beer mats? Haven't seen beer mats since about 1986. Weren't they banned by the Heath and Safety Executive?
everywhere we play has beermats but then we're in the frozen north where h&s is a bit more spit n shovel we'll be ordering a load of beermats today btw
I have been nervous about stringing these flats through the body. They're La Bella 760FS (45-105) but I have had flats (different ones) start to crack when they've been strung through. Anyone strung these flats through this bass? I suppose I could put the E through the bridge and the rest through the body.
I have those exact strings on my USA p and it's strung through body, no issues thus far and it's racked up a good few practise hours and a gig so far... sweet bass by the way matey
Is that your logo in your BC image? that would look cool as a beer mat I reckon.
that is indeed our logo matey and thankyou kindly I'm currently dreaming up a rear print with our facebook / soundcloud & twitter details on it to swing by the guys and see what they think
-
prices obviously vary depending on quantity but these do 100 for £68 apparently (http://www.beermatcompany.co.uk/prices/) or £95 for 1000! tempted to give 'em a shot
Get some made into beer mats and give them to some pubs... they would look cool.
I love this idea! our band logo is circular, that'd look awesome!!
