1. Besides the Kay bass everyone seems to have started on, my second bass was a Hohner jazz copy. Cost £100 and played pretty well, gave it away after i got my fender, wish i hadn't.
2. Great post, after listening to those tracks back to back now need to get my cd's out and have have a bit of a Bjorkfest
3.
I do believe though that you don't necessarily have to be young and attractive to earn a living in an originals band!
This is me except the earning a living bit!
4. Thought i had just found one for £119, turned out to be a demo for and online shop design company
5. All sounds great guys. Only looked in on this part of the of the forum because i saw the west mids mentioned, but after looking at some of the other bashes i'm interested.
6. Good to hear your not giving up, +1 for zz top, good luck and best wishes
7. better than me, although i cant play slap so obvious really, but my timings better than his (and what hair ive got left)
8. omg eddie and the hotrods, blast from the past we used to cover 'Do anything you wanna do'.... forgot all about that
9. I think these are the usual problems you get with bands, creative individuals in the same room will cause one or another to try a bit of oneupmanship. It is an unworkable rule to impose, so just stand your ground and make sure you get your points across. This sort of thing caused me to leave my first band in the 90's, we recently got back together and some of it is resurfacing but is usually cut off before it can become a problem, were a lot older and wiser.
10. After being on other forums, i would say this is just about right.
11.
Talent wise has to be 18,352 - hopefully much higher enthusiasm-wise
Slightly below this as im still waiting for my band to get its arse in gear and do our first gig in over 15 years!
12. One way to find out would be to just e-mail the guy and ask who the owner is and wether he has permission to sell, may save all the legal hassles and at least you would have some sort of paperwork to say it was brought in good faith. I know that this is not an answer to the question of legality but its a start on the right path to understanding the ownership of an item
13. The Fifth Dimension - Aquarius /Let The Sunshine In - not got it spot on, trying to learn the timing on let the sunshine in and similar tracks
14. If he's a decent chap go for it, but deffo try to speak to him before the gig and air your concerns.
15. Our guitarist can be a bit like that, but in a stroke of luck last night his newly re-valved amp burnt out, smoke everywhere and for the first time in ages i could actually hear myself
16. Get some different styles and speeds of drum backing tracks, play along to them and dont push yourself too hard to get it right first time just feel the rhythm and play whatever feels right.
17. Keep a spare battery handy and when it sounds like youve blown a speaker in the amp its time to change it (thats what mine sounds like anyway)
18.
Oh aye, I have no doubt. Thinking of my own guitarist, he's accused me over-thinking everything; of being too technical; of playing too many notes (particularly if it's a tune I've written, where he has tried to copy my fills exactly and wondered why I'm w***ing around); of being some highbrow snobbish twat.
I got this last night from my guitarist (also my brother) and also at the last practice on a new song he had just showed us and played and expected the bass to be right first time. he also told me that i wrote tunes like a bass player and he has trouble figuring them out, whatever that means!
19. Nice one, great composition, enjoyed it.
20. how about - Nick Lowe, "I love the sound of breaking glass"?
21. I've used headphones for a while for practicing a not come across this problem although my hearings not the best. But would agree with Lfalex it could be volume, but would like to know the reason if this is wrong.
22. Got a whirlwind from the late 80s, used to have to but not sure what happened to the other one, plus a few patch leads and a bright orange lead i brought when i was using a combo as a monitor from bout the same time and still used. But i think my oldest is from about 83 my first lead, only a cheap one still works but sounds a bit rough.
23. great article, been re-listening to some of the songs he mentions as i read it, some fantastic bass lines
24. James Eller on and off used it quite a lot live with The The, and hasn't Sting also used fretless in the past?
