2. Low, but not in a Peter Hook way! Maximum of my strap, if ive got something fast to play usually swing the neck up and hunch over the bass more

    Batteries
Some folk swear by changing them on their wedding anniversary or birthday etc, Once a year seems to work without issue for even the most regular players. I tend to do strings and battery every 6 months or so as a matter of course. Some basses do have a push pull for passive mode too.
Changed my battery last night at practice when it started to sound like a blown speaker in the amp. Unfortunately my bass doesn't have a passive switch, so it may mean me buying another bass, just in case you understand

The thing thats a pain, is when your battery goes you get no sound at all (or is that just my bass?) is there a way of putting a passive circuit in to by-pass the pre-amp
  6.
Completely out of order, except in serious tribute bands which aim to replicate the original band's sound, looks and instruments. Then that's kind of understandable, but you still shouldn't be coerced/pressured.
I Wouldn't want to be in a U2 serious tribute band after watching the amount of times Clayton changed his bass at Glastonbury, just couldn't afford it!
  7. This is my '87 power jazz bass special (active pups). Been doing some research on it as i didn't know a lot about it despite having one for over 20 years! The body is basswood, the neck on mine is Tri-laminated maple, graphite with rosewood fretboard (no graphite on the non active specials as far as i'm aware). Carbon graphite nut, 34'' scale length, 20 frets on jazz bass, 22 on power jazz bass. Standard fender tuning pegs, 3 position selector, 2 volume and tbx tone control. Gotta say i love it, lots of different sounds possible from the P/J pickup config. These are going for about £500 +. The body is precision in shape so not sure about pickguards personally i would leave it off. 8. 'I was made to love her' Stevie Wonder, Jamerson bass Still trying to get my head around 'Gates of delerium' by Yes
  9. My brother whose a guitarist has tried that a couple of times 'should have bought a MIA jazz bass instead of my MIJ jazz special' But i never really listened to him. However at one of our earliest recording sessions he did turn up with a mates 4001 (I was using a hohner jazz copy at the time) and told to use it as it would sound better. It sounded no better than the jazz copy as i wasn't used to it and found it hard to get a sound i liked out of it. Plus it had the PU covers on right where i played.
  10. Gonna have to agree far to much slap in demo's. I do like to hear a good player doing it well but, as others have posted 'less is more'. I don't play slap, never got my head around it and use more fingerstyle with a bit of pick. This does not mean i don't like it i just like to hear all types of playing in equal proportion.
  11. Great review, thanks for that. tried other string makes but always come back to rotosound just feel and sound right to me, so its nice to see some of what go's into making them.

The bloody thing costs me a fortune
I didn't know such a thing as a pick punch existed, I've been using scissors for years http://www.clickshop.com/product/4921/pick...ch/pickmaster1/
Ha! My very first bass was a Kay SG copy - VERY cheap & cheerful in transparent red plywood. I wonder whatever happened to it.
Seems a lot of peeps started on kay, me too £14 from woolworths, shortscale sg copy. the neck bent so much i ripped the frets out and used it as a fretless before selling it for £10.
  17. Thanks guys, i agree with you kempy it is a great bass so many nice sounds out of it. I need to get mine set up now as its never been done although it still plays well so just a bit of tweaking. also managed to find out that the passive jazz special had a different bridge standard fender looking type.
  18.
Horrid colour indeed!! I see that there have been 3 offers which, if genuine, must be encouraging for you!! Having said that, we have no way of knowing what the offers were. Just spotted that it is a "Best Offer" situation.
Yeh i clicked that to, it would be intesting to know how much it go's for. as for mine, it's not for sale the missus has said to me in the past i should sell it but i just cant bear the thought of being parted from it

What a horrible colour though, but the price is around what I payed 20 years ago.
  20. Ok, so I bought this bass (or more rightly my then gf now wife bought it as a xmas present) in 87/88. It's a Fender power jazz bass special, active PJ style bass MIJ. The thing is when i got it being 19 at the time and not knowing any better i went for it purely on looks and because it sounded nice. It never came with its manuals which i have since found on the fender website and i cant find any info about it online or very little. Also seem to remember it had to bridge options although i could be wrong on that. So basically what i want to know is whats the body made of (thinking basswood?) Am i right about the bridge? how much are they worth now? And were they any good compared to a standard jazz/precision of the 80's. I know this may seem a bit lame to have a bass over 20 years and not know anything about it, but thats just me unfort. By the way I love it and would never sell it. So guys over to you.
  21. So are we saying that for most of us its a difference in timing that creates the issues, given that you can sing in the first place and have practiced that part as well as the bass. Or is there more to it?
  22. I had a couple of fretless years ago one i ripped out the frets myself and one i bought sh from the practice rooms we used ( a washburn i think) liked the sound but really didnt fit with what i was playing at the time so got rid of them. but would defo go for another one.
