1. As far as singing and playing go just cant do it, even if i could sing, i even have problems talking i concentrate that hard. i can however dance/move really badly when playing! Never learnt to read music but, understand tab to a certain level but couldnt sight read it.
2.
is that a spector beyonces bassist is playing?
I wouldn't know watching Kool and the gang. Kool's playing a Zon.
3.
I would guess it's the speaker tube for a talkbox.
I did think that at first but never seen a tube that long for one
4.
Why don't you all join in with my new game ' Will it be P or a J next'
It was a Rickenbacker
5. What the H has the singer of Glasvegas got attached to his mic, looks like a hosepipe!
6. Thats one good looking bass, love the colour just what i want
7.
Oddly enough I can switch between my Bolin, Sterling or Warwicks and the last thing that I consider is whether the bass is a SC or DC... they are just 'basses'!
+1 to that, sound wins over style
8.

Anyone remember GWAR
9.
+1. his stuff for Primal Scream is good, but IMO his playing with Stone Roses stuff is sublime.
Definately same opinion here. Never learnt to play his stone roses parts would just destroy the music for me
10.
Awesome. Best so far that I've seen. Mani looked very uncomfortable in that military trench coat, but his playing was spot on, on a £300 bass too!!!
He was blowing on his hands at one point must be cold there. he's a very underated player imo.
11. Primal Scream, Mani, Epiphone jack casady bass. Great couple of songs too.
12.
As a long time user of Rickenbacker forums I thought I'd pop up here - I wondered if I was alone in this thought: when your band ceases to exist (as a bassist) do you find yourself playing bass less and less?
Welcome rolo, gotta say thats about right after leaving my band in '94 i hardly played for 15 years. but last year got back with the band and im now playing catch up, all great fun. As for magic garden guys never recorded there, but did some at Mad Hatter and White Rabbit studios.
13. I've always liked Ibanez basses, but think you've just made want to go out and buy another for a project. Great work.
14. Ive been drooling over the the £1400 fender deluxe model couldn't afford it though, but this is most certainly in my price range. Just beautiful.

Hello all
Welcome Steve. What kind of stuff will your band be playing? Is it the same set list from 1995?
OMG I hope not, won't be in the band long if that happens!! At the mo were writing new stuff, which i would say is based on the indie type stuff we were playing back then, although my fingers won't move as fast now and my playing style has changed/improved so different feel now. Im also thinking of doing something perhaps with the singer, me on bass and writing/playing comp based/keyboard backing not sure how that will work though yet. wez

Hello all

Hi all, I thought its about time i introduced myself as I've been reading these forums for a couple of years but only just signed up. The names Steve, im from Wolverhampton and been playing bass on and off for about 28 years. The band i was in up to '95 have just recently got back together and after a 15 year hiatus from playing or playing very little, we should be gigging soon. I would class myself as a 5 out of 10 player nothing special as I'm self taught and never really learnt the technical or theory side of playing, although I'm learning a bit now. My equipment at the mo is basic but works (sold most my stuff back in the 90's) '87 Fender power jazz bass special Peavey TKO65 combo (from early 80's not sure when because i got it second hand, but thing wont die great amp) Line six bass floor pod Looking to upgrade to a decent amp in the near future as my first buy (and when i've got the money) but looking around at the on the forum i've got a serious case of cashless GAS!! Anyway will see you guys on here over time. WEZ
17. So what sort of sound do get from an oak body?
18.
I've got to put this in the quotes thread - it's one of the funniest things I've ever read. Bet all you guys who have spent years having lessons & refining their playing are feeling pretty stupid now, aren't you? Two weeks.
Yeh just think 30 years wasted, i could have done it all in two weeks if only i had put the effort in, damn i need to find a dark corner and have a good cry!
19. A few years ago the BBC ran a program called the 'making of me' one of the people involved was Vanessa Mae, she wanted to find out whether it was nature or nurture that made her great at what she did. One segment of the show was her going to see a pchycologist who studied musical albility, he asked how many hours she had practiced from first taking up the violin to the age of 16 (11 years I think) and she came back with just over 7000 hours, he said this was about right and 75% of the making of a great player is down to practice. Mae started playing piano at the age of 3 and her mother was eventually to become her manager, these were probably both factors in her becoming an international star (music from an early age and a parent driven to see her suceed, she eventually sacked her mother as manager and they had a strained relationship after that) something else that i heard on a science podcast was about Albert Einstien. He apparently took up violin at the age of six. After he died they dissected his brain and found part of it was more developed than normal, this was put down to his early musical ability, something that is shown in most people with a similar musical background Ive played myself for 30 years on and off, completely self taught with no structure. I can play, not great but had some positive comments over the years. Personnally If i had been to lessons and taken more time to study rather than just play to other songs i would be a better player now. I would say that stuctured practice makes for the greatest part of a top player along with some physical traits ( im never gonna be a great footballer no matter how much i practice, my balance is all over the place) and a very musical background.
20. fantastic tool, working great on firefox 4. Would be great to print tabs off but not a biggie to copy/paste. Cheers fredde
21. tried learning my brothers acoustic back in '84 but hated it, to many chords to remember and to fiddley. so my brother suggested bass which seem to click with me as i was picking out the bass groove in songs without realising it. first thing i learned to play was 'zz top gimme all your loving' because it was nice and easy. still playing now and still luv it
22. when i started playing bass again after a on/off break of 12 years thought i would have a go at hysteria. took me a year and half to get my fingers to work at the right speed but well worth it as our singer thinks i'm awesome (his facebook quote) just because i can play it. so as bilbo says be patient it will come
23. years ago when we were recording our guitarist would have his 3 guitars, effects unit, miked up amp etc and spend most of the recording time fiddling for his sound, overlaying, delaying and all manner of techie things. It was the same thing at gigs, but it never sounded any different to me. I try for one sound that will cover most stuff i play as i figured out years back that the sound in my head was not the one coming out the cab. still its nice to play with lots of equipment!!
24. Playing in the 90's it was usual that we had set up and soundchecked just before the doors of the pub/club opened, and not wanting to leave the gear for people to pinch we stayed with it. so as there was nothing to do but wait for a couple of hours we would have a drink or five. listened back to some of the tapes we did and they sound fine except for the guitarist with his occasional bum note (he would go to pieces on stage). twenty years later and coming up for our first reunion gig i dont think i'll be drinking at all, just cant cope with it now.
25. First gig was with a Peavey tko65 watter miked into the pa system, couldn't hear a thing. Next gig borrowed a 18" house sized cab with a 100 watt H&H head still couldn't hear a thing so added a 4x10 with another head to the 18 and H&H and used my peavey combo as a monitor and occasionally backed that with a friends trace amp and cab, volume was more important than sound. Been about 14/15 years since i last gigged still got the Peavey tko and will be doing a slot soon, so not sure what i'll be using as the gig provides backline. so looking around for a new rig oh and as for basses Hohner jazz copy first few gigs until i got my fender power jazz special which i still have
