1.
you wanna sound big and punchy and in tune. Compressor and Tuner
Yup, dull, but def the best starting point, i wont go anywhere without compression!
2. Lol, Fred was suposed to be my tutor when i was at college too, but was on tour at the time so i only saw him once, a room full of bass players jaws just dropped when he came and did a short demo. I was also assessed by him among others on a short solo piece id written at uni, which should have been nerve-wracking! if i wasnt such an arrogant little sod!
3. Everyone recall Mr Peaveys attitude in BGM?, he didnt come off as the caring type! Hope you get this sorted out though mate, dont stand for this.
4. Ditto here really, googled bass forum on a whim in about '04 i reckon and found bassworld, then of course we had all the issues and bassworld and now basschat. I think i posted more on bassworld though.
5.
I wouldnt say bass was harder to play, I wouldnt say it was easier either. And Guitar strings can really get your fingers sore, its like cheese wire! And in a band context, everybody has their part to play and everyone is as equally important ( even if bassists are that little bit cooler than the rest, but shhhhh)
I have a stock answer to this issue, i always say: Bass is easier to learn, but harder to play well!
6. nice thanks dude, ill look closer when i get in from work!
7. Im also curious about the peterson strobostomp, it looks great, but id be worried about it taking ages, and you sounding out with everyone else that didnt tune to a peterson!? Anyone got any knows?
8. Yup, i recall a similar story straight from the Trace reps mouth about the BLX being so called because of the over excited and repeated description of it being the dogs blx by the designer when he presented the design at a meeting or something, and the name stuck!
9. shims still confuse me, even after the article, does anyone have pics of shims in place as examples of different placements and their effects? (In slow typing in big letters using small words!)
10. I never waxed a warwick once a week, once a month at most, and never had a prob. Warwickhunt whaddya say?
11. Mine is also chunky, and also black (with maple and matching head incidently) but even though it does have a chunky neck everytime i plug it in i still giggle and say "It sounds just like a stingray!" As i wanted one for sooooo many years, infact it was specificly the sound of a Ray that got me started (Chilis and RATM and ride, and Neds), i was like i wanna make 'that' sound, and only a ray would do, shame it took like 15 years to get one!, and over a year later i STILL havn't got over the novelty! Sorry to threadjack, lush bass good luck with the sale, the pickguard looks like an abalone one i used to have.
12. Dammit, i hate precisions, i do i hate em, i wouldnt be seen dead with the orrible, plunky things, i wouldnt, i woul... I hate you They are all lush! Now I want a P-bass, just when i was happy Beedster, i was so happy!
13. Me too, a random gold badass and white pickguard from my 75ri jazz (dosnt actually fit that well but i like the whit elook so ill get one made when funds allow) strap locks and thats it for now. Ultimately ill whack a detuner on and seeing as you lot keep banging on about wizards i may try em, but the pups on there are pretty good anyway, quite middy and barky, i luuurve my flamey necked VMJ! Its def rattlier than my fenders, but darn for the money its an Uber steal! Mines in the bass porn section
14. Looks more jazzy shaped then, i thought it was a P, im still trying to find time to get back to the shop for a noodle, that colour is much nicer though.
15. I love the hartke bass driver too, wipes the floor with the sansamp (imho). But the pedal i wont play without is my trusty old Boss CS-1 compressor, although to be fair any compressor will do!, as long as there is some squish.
16. when i was in Balance of Silence i used my warwick FNA jazzman, a stingray and a status 6 string, all worked really well.
17. Gotta admit im pretty tempted to offer my markbass 151HR as a swap for another traveller 102P to do exactly this. Just one of the little guys seems loud enough for almost anything, and my new house is so tiny even a compact 15 like the markbass is hard to fit in!
18. I sooo wish i could recall, but sadly i have no idea, it was a large square pub with virtually no furniture at all!, like a saloon in a western!
19. if im off tomorrow afternoon ill go have a noodle and let you all know how it is.
20. Once my band turned up as a very last minute booking to replace a cancelled band at a pub in Leamington who had somehow heard of us and begged us to drive there from Leicester with about two hrs notice, this was about 14 years ago. When we got there the landlord was steaming drunk and VERY rude and abusive, before we'd even got out the car, he was just standing in the parking spot in the road outside the pub wobbling and apparently looking for a fight with anyone. When he realised we were the band he just grunted a lot and wandered off inside. As we set up he wandered in and out of us in the 'stage' area making snide and unpleasent comments about wether we knew how to work a plug, amps etc, etc Eventually we did a few bars not even a sound check per se, just a sorta 'is it all on?' before getting into detail, whereupon he came up and said : " I told you to turn down and you didnt, so heres £50, now pack up and f*uck off!" ?? He hadnt said a word!, sure enough we packed up and as we loaded the car we noticed a big van hiding round the corner , with lo and behold, another band waiting to load in!!!!! We went back to our local and spent the £50 on beer and nuts and tried to figure what the hell had happened! (The long version includes an arrogant teenage me being pulled out the pub after loading the car by my much bigger, older and wiser drummer as i had gone back in to start on the drunken landord and his mates as i thought i was: A), invincible being a teenager, and the greatest bass player in the world and how dare he treat us like that, heh heh
21. Another view askew fan here too..
